“I’m very thoughtful,” she nodded in reply to his conclusion, “also very kind and considerate,” she added. Wait, did thoughtful and considerate mean the same thing? There must have been a slight difference in the nuances if not they would not have made two entirely different words for it. Whatever, she didn’t have the brainpower to wrap gifts and think about the nuances of the English language. “But of course, you wouldn’t know because you’re too busy thinking about recycling,” she made a face to show her displeasure, but it wasn’t malicious at all but rather playful. Magnolia was in a good mood and had, thus far, been doing a very good job of keeping it that way.

“I dunno,” she shrugged at the thought. Between Christmas shopping and meetings with friends and family events and shopping trips, her winter vacations were usually pretty booked up. Plus, it wasn’t like she actually had a boyfriend and no one had the time to be social and look for a boyfriend over winter break. To make matters worse, the one boy she had been hoping to play that role was talking about her going on a date as if the word boyfriend hadn’t phased him at all. But she supposed it didn’t make sense for him to care because he wasn’t interested. That thought didn’t sit well with her.

He was still here, that had to mean something….right?

“I get pretty busy, probably will just spend it with my mates,” she offered instead. “I wonder what Allison…” she paused looking over at him for a moment, “and Duncan and those kids are doing over winter break,” she said offhandedly. Not that she cared, in fact, she could not have cared less but she wanted to know what was going on between Isaac and Allison (if anything), and pretending to care seemed like the easiest way in.

Magnolia made a joke, and Isaac smiled a little. She was sarcastic, but he was not angry about it or whatever, and he shook his head. “Yep, recycling is all that I care about.” He continued the ruse, that smirk playing off his lips as he leaned against the counter she was working on. Isaac turned toward her, his hip pressed against the counter, and spoke again. “Guess I will have to pay more attention to other things.” It was a stupid line, but Isaac was full of those, especially when Magnolia was around, so the teenager committed to it.

Why he was so interested in what Magnolia was doing over break was less amusing, though, and Isaac watched as she thought about the topic. And then she brought up his friends, and he frowned. Moving away from the counter and her, Isaac shrugged. “Not sure, probably the same shite they always get up to over breaks.” It was an honest answer, but it was not precisely a detail-rich one. He hoped she would not push it; he did not want to talk about his friends; he wanted to talk more about her. The teenage wizard paced a little on the other side of the island, careful not to step on any of the nonsense that Magnolia had already left in her wake.

“Allison likes to go to the mall a lot,” he said; the annoyance in his voice was easy to hear. The Slytherin witch always asked him to go along, and Isaac always declined. Wanting to turn the conversation away from his friends, Isaac looked back at Magnolia and spoke. “Maybe you girls could hang out.” He offered, but it was a joke. He put Magnolia and Allison being friends pretty high on the ‘shit-that-is-never-going-to-happen list.

“That’s a noble cause, Sir Hackney,” she scoffed, finding it silly that someone like Isaac would care about things like the environment. There was no reason to think he would not, in all honesty, but the bad boy she had built up in her head was handsome, dangerous, and couldn’t care less about anything but living on the edge. So far, Isaac had only met one of those expectations, but they were still working on the rest.

She was into that rabbit hole in her head she often got lost in during class, the reason why she usually couldn’t focus enough to take notes or anything like that, but his words took her out of her trance, and she looked at him curiously. “Or other people,” she added playfully, nudging her elbow into him with a smile on her face before realizing how stupidly desperate she probably looked from that angle. “You know cause…well,” she paused, searching for something to add but deciding that it was better to switch the topic instead.

“Want some more hot cocoa?” she said instead, gesturing in the direction of the kitchen as if to suggest she’d return to it if he wanted anything from it. “Oh—” she said, her expression falling a little when he didn’t go into detail about what he did over break, “So like friends and stuff like that?” she offered vaguely, promising herself that if he nodded or said yes, she’d be satisfied with that answer and move on. He was always sort of really quiet about his life and it made her wonder whether it was shame, like he had with his mum, or just a preference for privacy that kept him mum on the issue.

“Yeah, all girls like going to the mall,” she offered instead, rolling her eyes internally at the thought of Allison even though she had been the one to bring it up in the first place. “Ugh, as if,” she made a face at Isaac’s suggestion, the thought making her frown. “I’d rather be stuck with you at the mall than Allison and that’s saying a lot!”
