[Announcement] Adoptions and Borrowing in a Nutshell

Hello.

I thought it was time to clarity what our policy on adoption and borrowing of characters is. There recently has been some confusion and I am hoping to prevent there being any problems in the future.

Adoptions

1 | What is an adoption?

An adoption is when you play another person’s character and intend to keep this character permanently. The original creator of the character will relinquish all control and you will be responsible for character’s sheet, design and roleplay posts.

2 | Am I allowed to adopt a character?

Generally speaking, yes. First you must get the creators permission. Then you will need to get admin approval, the same as for any other character. The same rules as always apply. If we find you already have too many characters, your application may be declined. If you already have two Hogwarts students and want to adopt a third, this is not possible.

3 | What is required on adopt a character?

Essentially, the same as for any character. We need a sheet, roleplay response and an EFB if applicable. It is your responsibility to submit these items. The only additional requirement is for you to be an established driver on Magical Hogwarts.

4 | Wait? What if there already is a sheet for the character?

Some characters offered for adoption may already have a sheet. This may have been made by the original creator (if the character isn’t played) or the previous driver (if the character existed before and is changing hands for one reason or another). As a general rule you are not required to REWRITE the sheet. However, it needs to be RESUBMITTED with a new roleplay response written by you. If the roleplay response is insufficient, we may decline your application.

Also, due to evolving standards a sheet that was previously acceptable might have to be edited to be compliant with new rules and arrangements on the site. Therefore, be prepared to edit the body of text you have been given. Do not count on it being accepted blindly.

Please remember that only established drivers may adopt a character. You must have at least one original character sheet at any given time. If have written your own sheet for your adoption, you may disregard this.

5 | My adopted character already has a Gringotts account.

Please contact the Gringotts Main Admin to assist you. It would be unfair for you to simply receive an account with anything other than 200 Sickles in it. This is the normal amount you receive when starting a new character and is exactly what you are entitled to.

Borrowing

1 | What is borrowing?

Borrowing is taking over another person’s character for a certain period of time. This period of time is typically agreed upon in advance, or in some cases may be left unspecified.

2 | Is this allowed?

No.

3 | Why not?

Borrowing creates unnecessary upheaval in the RP community. Aside from generating administrative effort for the sorting admins and Gringotts team it also is confusing to the members and leads to instability in character. Borrowing is also prone to causing OOC and IC conflicts if the loaned character is not played according to the creator’s wishes.

If you plan to go away for a while and are worried about your characters being deleted, please contact the MH Main Admin, or better even just save your sheet to your hard drive. There is nothing stopping you from resubmitting a character after an extended leave.

Closing Words

It is the responsibility of the new driver to ensure that the resubmit takes place. If it doesn't, you will be held responsible and action taken accordingly. We don't want to enforce stricter rules on this practice, so please anyone who has recently adopted a character, submit your sheet with the new roleplay response (unless you have already done so). This includes anyone who has received admin approval for the adoption.

If you have any questions, please ask them here.

Well there are two options here as I see it.

Firstly, he tells admin he's going to be away for a while, and asks that Jacob be put on haitus. We know about it, make a note, and there's no fear of deletion.

Secondly, I suppose you could "adopt" and resubmit the sheet, then when Shuntaye comes back he could re-adopt and resubmit the sheet. But to be honest I wouln't feel comfortable with that option - your roleplaying styles are very different from what I've seen. Also it might not feel like "his" character any more when he comes back - I can't speak for Dermod's original driver (I adopted him some 18 months ago) but I would feel very odd if I had to hand him back after all this time.

So - I'm going to stick my neck out here and say I'd rather you didn't "borrow" Jacob. Sorry to disappoint.Other senior admins, feel free to override me if you feel the need

(oh, and don't worry, it didn't sound jumbled at all)

I delete accounts after they have not been logged into for 90 days. If they belong to a driver who is active with others, the accounts are often left longer.

If I know someone's away for a while, the account will be left alone.

Also, it's really no big deal to save your own sheet as a word file just in case.

Perhaps it should also be edited to reflect the changes in gringotts accounts?
