[solved] more stupid questions...
« on: July 13, 2013, 09:26:28 AM »
... because I did one called stupid questions before and that got old fast.

1. I think this was answered before but I still don't really get the concept of robes, like are they cloaks or dresses or pants and just what are they??? I've been on the harry potter wikia but it just confused me more. Because according to the movie it's just a fancy dress for girls and pant suit ish thing with a cloak for guys but it's not the case in the books so which one is the right one?

2. How many wizard settlements are there? I only remember the burrow and where the lovegoods live and that one time when all the wizards came together for the Quidditch world cup. So does the rest of the wizarding community live amongst muggles in flats or villages?

3. I've always struggled when it comes to picking line of work for my characters because I don't know where to draw the line between a muggle sort of career and a more wizarding one. For example I want to start like a fishing empire sort of thing a la dark shadows, but would that make them really rich in the wizarding world?

I'm sorry for having so many questions. ><

1. My understanding of robes (someone correct me if I'm wrong xD):

In Hogwarts, the robes are the cloaky things worn over the top of the rest of the uniform (the shirt, pants, tie, jumper etc). Dress robes are the same, but usually embellished somehow to make them more fancy.

2. There are a whole bunch! Wiki actually has a nice list. Places like Tinworth (where Bill & Fleur live) and Godric's hollow are totally magic communities. On top of those are places like Dahliental & Chatoeil in France and Neroli in Italy that are MH "canon". Wizards could potentially live in any muggle city/town or out randomly in the country too, and I imagine that every big city would have some kind of wizarding area, even if it was just like Diagon Alley and mostly full of shops. Of course, you also have the option of just making up a little town for your family to be from if you'd prefer. Plenty of options :) <333

3. I think another admin could answer this one better than me, so I'll leave it for now.

I have no idea what Dark Shadows is but! I'm not sure, it could work? Don't forget, fishing is super hard work and many fishermen aren't exactly rolling in dosh.  It'll vary from day to day the amount of fish someone would catch. They could go a week or two without catching enough to really make a profit. Not unless they were catching a particularly rare and fancy sort of seafood.  It doesn't mean they'd be exceptionally wealthy at any rate. I imagine whoever they were selling to would want it at a wholesale price and try and knock a bit of money off the stock. That being said, I always imagined fishing being a bit closer to a Muggle profession. I'm sure it could work, though. I'd just keep an eye on how rich you'd like them to be.

Regardless, there's a list of jobs right here that might help to spark some ideas ^^;

I'm late here, but I understand exactly what you mean. For example, I always wonder who collects the trash; how the houses get built, whether they have any kind of insurance (I'm pretty sure we covered that elsewhere, but I *used* to wonder about it xD) Generally I pick something that interests me and give it a magical twist. For example, when I wrote Dermod's paternal EFB I had been listening to a song called "Tall Ships", about people who lived on the Cornish coast in the 19th century and how they lured ships onto the rocks to steal the cargo rather than starve. I changed the traditional fake lighthouse to a magical mist and... one new wizarding profession. Albeit an illegal one xD

That is so cool! I've never thought about it that way tbh! Now I keep thinking of that scene in sleeping beauty where the three fairies charmed their stuff to make them do all the work.

But I'll definitely keep this in mind when I think of new careers, thanks Carys! :D
