Squib, or just plain muggle?
« on: August 22, 2013, 12:00:26 AM »
Working on a new character, and was thinking of making one of her older sisters non-magical. Her mother is a witch (halfblood), and her father is a muggle. Would that make said sister a squib, or just a regular muggle, since she has one magical parent and one non-magical? Would it even be a possible outcome, since isn't a squib usually the rare product of two pureblood (or at least magical) parents? I've read myself in circles and now I'm confused!

A squib is the offspring of two magical beings. The somewhat derogatory-sounding name is used to express the fact that they failed to get the magical genes. I think her sister is just a muggle <3

On MH, we generally stick to using "squib" to describe the offspring of two pureblood parents. However, other sources (off MH) that I've found say that squibs are the offspring of one or more magical parents. Honestly, I'd say go with whatever makes you more comfortable. And yes, squibs are very rare, and the sources I've found state that they occur in 1:100 at the most, 1:1000 at the least.

That was my initial thought. Thanks!

So it seems like by MH standards she would be considered a muggle, not a squib. Hm. I'll probably just go with muggle then...I can always modify if I have to. Thanks so much for the help!!

Fabien (and Estelle) Sanxay have a witch mother, muggle father, and a muggle brother, so that sounds fine to me :)
