“You didn’t see that. In fact, you spent the whole afternoon getting your nails manicured.” Yes, that was a perfectly reasonable excuse. Maybe not for this muggle standing in front of her, with his big hands, unruly beard, leather jacket, boots to match. But that didn’t matter much to this particular obliviator. Edith flicked her wand again, adding a lovely coat of Bachelorette Bash pink polish to the man’s fingernails. “That’ll do,” she nodded to him, sending him on his way. Edith smiled as he walked away, finally done with her day. Finally.
Edith took a quick glance around, spotted no one, and turned on her heel, apparating to an alley two blocks from her flat. She practically skipped down the street, excited to get home, snuggle inside her blanket nest, and rest up for an hour or so before her evening activities, which consisted mainly of drinking beer in her blanket nest. She would have skipped straight to her door, but some idiot was blocking it. Ugh. People these days, having the nerve to stand in her way when she had blankets to cuddle and beers to drink.
But no! That wasn’t just any idiot, it was Jon! So, not so much of an idiot. At least, less of one than Edith thought she was for forgetting that they had made plans. Edith had to push her glasses farther up her face and squint to be sure, but it was definitely him. And he had food. Lots of food. Edith’s favorite part about quality time with Jon. Besides the quality time, of course.
“Nothing too exciting,” she replied, grabbing one of the bags out of her friend’s hands. It smelled like chocolate. Mmm, good choice of bag to hold. “There was this one big bloke that picked up an old book at a shop that made him sprout a second pair of ears. Got to help on the clean up at the hospital for that one. But I didn’t get anything fun.” She finagled with her keys in the lock and pushed the door open with her foot, managing to hold it open for Jon to slide past her. He knew that she shared the flat on the fourth floor and there was no lift so it was up the stairs they go!
Edith trudged up the stairs and continued to babble on about her day. “Nothing really happened after that, until there was one guy that saw some animal he wasn’t supposed to. So that was a big to-do with that department for not keeping those things secret, and I got to change his mind about things. Most I’ve done all week, really.” They had finally reached her flat’s landing, and Edith once again fiddled with her keys in the lock. She only pushed the door open a crack, trying to peek in to see if her ancient roommate was home, and she was in luck. No naked, saggy old muggle woman to be seen.
“Welcome to the chateau,” Edith cooed, setting her bag down in the kitchen. It was a quite small kitchen, perfectly matching the quite small flat: a little bit of counter space, a kettle, a stove/oven combo big enough for two burners, and a sink piled with dishes. “Sorry about the mess,” Edith said as she shrugged. “I only like to clean when Margie isn’t around.” She tipped her wand at various things around the room, cleaning things in a matter of seconds what would have taken her hours (and that’s mostly because she would also be drinking while cleaning) by hand.
“So!” Edith pulled Jon into a hug after he had set everything down. “What’d you bring, what’d you bring?!”
