my heart is nuclear [verity]

Well, shoot.

Carlotta Tomassi was certainly not expecting rain today, no sir. But there it was, falling down from the sky and dribbling down the little window she'd stood at. Lottie wasn't dressed for the effing rain. She'd dressed for the weather that'd presented itself in the morning - slightly chilly, but overall, manageable, and slightly windy, but just enough. The fact that the weather had changed on her was starting to make her angry, and so she stood, crossing her arms and staring out the window of St. Mungo's.

The witch supposed she could accio a coat to her, although there was a reason she'd chose to opt out of wearing one that morning. None of the jackets in her closet went with her outfit, not the leather one or the over-sized cardigans, or the jean ones or the sweatshirts, or the designer ones she'd found in the back of some obscure shop the other day. That's why she hadn't worn any of them, and instead opted for the small knit jacket she wore over her arms. Lottie supposed she could apparate, or Floo to the neat little café she'd intended to go to, the one with the little scones that tasted like home. Sighing, the Italian pulled her wand out of her bag and thought of the little shop, flicking her wand and hoping to feel the warmth of the little shop.

But instead, what she felt was water droplets, on her hair, and hands, and arms and shoulders. Lottie'd thought about the view from the shop right before she'd apparated, the view of the shop across the street. The weird one that she'd always wanted to go into but never had a chance. A joke shop, she reckoned, now that she stood in front, looking in the windows at the interior. Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes, it was called, and it was right interesting to look at, too. Lottie ducked inside, tucking her wand into her bag as she looked around the shop, smiling at the warm confines that surrounded her when she'd stepped in.

Her eyes scanned the room, taking in all of the sights - including one pale little redhead that stood at the counter. Lottie didn't think she'd ever seen a girl with hair so red, not ever. And she liked it. Lottie's eyes darted around the shop once more before landing on some ghastly looking flesh colored product, with an ear at one end. The Italian was quick to grab it before she walked over to the redhead nonchalantly, giving the girl her best, most flirtatious smile. "Hi, sorry to bother you, but do you work here?" She asked. "I've never been in here before - I was just wondering what this was?"

It was raining… Times like this made Verity extremely glad that she worked in a prank shop. People trying to find cover from the rain would come in and sure that meant she actually had to work, but it also meant more money and larger paychecks. That wasn’t a bad thing by any stretch of the imagination. A large grin spread across her face as she watched people shuffle through the door, water rolling off of their coats. “Welcome to Weasleys Wizard Wheezes!” Her voice carried through the store to the door; she’d had a lot of practice being loud without shouting thanks to the tw- the twins. Her smile flickered just slightly as her mind started to mentally correct her thought, but she left it. Sure, things had changed, but the twins were the founders even if one wasn’t around anymore. You make it sound like he’s just taking a vacation, Ver… Jesus. Before she had a chance to reflect on it, though, the thought was shoved away. Nope, not dealing with it. Not today, and probably not ever really.

Although there were people milling about, there weren’t many people actually buying anything. The longer she waited, the more people she saw come and go. Finally she just pulled her sketch pad out and started working on the design improvements that they’d needed. George was good at coming up with ideas, but refining them was her specialty. She was already good at runes, and Verity had slowly been learning how to viably incorporate them into fabrics without lessening the effects. It had been fascinating up until the point that she realized this would require her to actually work on her sewing. “The things I do for Weasley,” she muttered, smiling all the same. Frankly, Verity loved her job. It was the best thing in the world, even if she hardly made enough for her apartment. If she really needed the extra work, she could go back to her dad and see about working in the shop for some extra change. If nothing else, it was a good way to get some muggle money.

Muggle money… When had she stopped thinking in terms of “our advancements” and start thinking in terms of “muggle things”? It wasn’t like she’d known about magic all her life. No, she’d been thrust into this, and slowly she’d adopted it as her own. And frankly, that frightened her. The muggle work had always been familiar, safe, something she could retreat to where sure she might be judged by her hair, but certainly not her blood status. Her hand paused its work as her mind jumped to her time on the run; she knew some of her friends had escaped to France, that Ru had been in and out of places. She’d been lucky to have a place to crash in the US, but that had quickly become tedious. Returning had been nice, if only because it was a culture shock on two levels. The muggle world suddenly wasn’t her world anymore… And she wasn’t sure how she felt about that.

Someone was approaching the counter, and Verity pushed the thoughts out of her head. Maybe she’d revisit them when she was wasted, but even that was unlikely. She placed the pad of paper on the counter and smiled at the woman as she approached. “I do! Oh, it’s no bother.” She put her normal “customer service” smile on as she talked, her eyes giving the woman a once over not only to view the product but also because she was frankly quite pretty. And the hint of an accent was charming. Her smile turned a tad more sincere as she continued. “That, m’dear, is an Extendable Ear!” It was one of the products she was having trouble improving, funny enough. She’d find a way, though. She always did. “Say you want to listen to a conversation on the other side of a locked door. Well, now you can. Simply insert one side into your ear – not now, of course, but when you want to listen to something – and the other end goes under the doorway you want to listen behind or around the corner or whatever… Voila! You can hear as if those in question were talking from a mere foot away!” It was a tad sales-pitchy, sure, but that was kinda her job.

That was it.

Redheads were her type this month, there was no changing Carlotta's mind now. Every time the woman's hair moved, Lottie was reminded of fire, of the passion that the colour red held. For a moment she wished that she could pull off red hair, but she knew she'd only make it look bad. Red hair was reserved for the pale, light complected men and women of the world with blue eyes, and freckles. Lottie didn't have one freckle on her body, her eyes were as dark as her hair, and her complexion was as dark as the next Italian that grew up in the sun.

She smiled genuinely, nodding as she heard the explanation to whatever it was that she was holding in her hand. An extendable ear? Whatever would someone need that for?! It sounded ridiculous, honestly. Although, she supposed that just because she didn't need it, others might. The way the red head spoke was entertaining to the Italian. She was talking like Lottie actually wanted to buy the product, like she hadn't just come in here because of the rain and stayed because of the fine specimen in front of her. But still, she acted interested. People liked that, when you seemed to be into what they were saying. Even though she was only twenty four, Lottie knew that well enough by now.

"So, say I wanted to get behind someone's locked door without this little..." She looked down at the object. "Thing. How would you say I go about that?" Lottie inquired, leaning over the counter and offering a more suggestive smile to the girl. "Ask them out for coffee... or dinner... maybe drop a few more hints..." She took in a deep breath, licking her lips. "Or is it just a lost cause? Tell me if I'm wasting my time here...?" She paused, giving the girl a moment to finally tell Lottie her name.
