[Solved] French Pronunciation Question
« on: November 05, 2015, 10:17:13 AM »
This is more of an I'm-way-too-nerdy question than a proper Magical Hogwarts question, but it relates to my character so I'm asking anyway.  :D

I'm working on the textbook that Gauvain will use when he starts teaching Metamorphose in the fall term, and I had to coin a Latin/French term as a unit of measurement.  For the sake of my own sanity, could someone who actually speaks French natively (or with great familiarity) tell me how to properly pronounce it?

mèntes-metrum par res-visie (mm/rv)

**disclaimer that I'm not a native speaker and not even fluent i did A level (basically a NEWT???) french thats all**

chipping in because i saw you'd waited a day+ for a response but yea note my disclaimer haha

I'd say the first looks the most correct? Words ending in an s sound in french tend to drop it from pronunciation, and I'd say the 'res' would also take a 'ray' sound too. There's also likely to be a bit of throatiness in the pronunciation of the 'tr' in 'metrum' and the transition between 'par' and 'res' that ya just can't convey through text but yeah.

anyone more proficient in french can overrule me here though, helena springs to mind because that's her minor and she spent the summer living in paris but idk if she's active right now
