It had been a long day shopping for school supplies. A long, BORING day, because this year Kai was coming to Hogwarts too, and while you might think that twice the shopping would mean twice the fun, it hadn't really happened that way at all. Pixie had overlooked how long it would take to measure her little brother for his new robes ("no, of course he can't just wear your old ones! Because he's a boy, that's why!") and she was sure it hadn't taken nearly so long for her wand to choose her. And then the books - apparently he had to have new ones of those as well, just because she'd drawn pictures and doodles all over hers and it wasn't fair that Kai had to struggle to read the pages ("and I don't even
want to know where you learned some of those words, young lady!") - Pixie had managed to pick out her news books in about five minutes. It wasn't like you had to read them in the shop, just make sure the titles matched the ones on your list and buy them, that was all!
So the upshot was that Pixie had eventually been given permission to go off on her own, so long as she didn't stray out of Diagon Alley and she absolutely wasn't to do anything silly. Great! She had bought herself a large bagful of sweets which she munched as she walked along, and then because the sweets made her thirsty she'd wandered into the Leaky Cauldron, because that was still
technically in Diagon Alley. Nobody seemed to mind she was there, so she'd bought herself a glass of pumpkin juice and sat down by a window where she could look at the muggles going by.
It was then that she spotted it. A bright pink muggle bicycle, with a lime green basket attached between the handlebars. Grinning, Pixie knelt up on her seat and stared out of the window for a closer look. The wheels were painted different colours too, and...was that a knitted seat cover? It was quite the craziest thing she'd seen, and as she was planning to take muggle studies next year the soon-to-be third year decided she should get a head start in her studies by taking a closer look. Mum was going to be so pleased with her! Draining her glass, she skipped outside, ignoring the fact that she was now very much outside Diagon Alley, and knelt down beside the bicycle. Oh, it was so pretty! She touched the handlebars, rang the bell and then jumped back a little, expecting the owner to come out and tell her off.
But nobody came, and the thought came to her that perhaps it would be okay to just sit on it for a moment. It wasn't like she was going anywhere, she just wanted to see what it was like to ride one. Just a few feet down the road and she'd bring it right back. The fact that she hadn't ridden a bicycle before was no deterrent, Pixie lifted it from where it leaned against the wall, surprised at how light it was in her hands, lighter than a broom even, and then climbed onto the seat. She started pedalling, and the bicycle moved - this was easy! She pedalled faster, spotted out of the corner of her eye that
@Abby Lawson was standing outside the Leaky Cauldron too and waved to her, and then realised that she had absolutely no idea how a bicycle stopped. She dealt with this by pedalling a little faster, and then trying to turn around in the middle of the road (thankfully there were no cars about) which simply caused a nasty screeching sound. Well, maybe she could sort of jump off.
It was then that she discovered that the owner of the brightly-coloured bicycle had, by means of either a sticking charm or perhaps muggle glue, made certain that anyone who had made off with their property would be caught quickly. She was well and truly stuck on a bicycle she had no idea how to stop. "Abby, help!" she yelled as she continued on down the street.
