The summer sun beat down on his neck and he squinted against the brightness as he jumped off the porch of his cabin and walked towards the open area of grass that stretched from one side of the mess hall to the other. He was wearing his red and black swim trunks, with a Griffins logo of course on one leg, and a white tshirt with a towel slung around his neck, his feet slipped into his sneakers without socks just for the ease. They were fast approaching their free time and he picked up his pace as he thought of his upcoming activity. He wasn't sure who had challenged who but he and Tomie ha agreed to meet each outside the mess hall so they could see who really was the better kayaker. JR had bragged he would win in a race and was just hoping that all of the push ups that Tomie did in the mornings wouldn't give her the edge.
Lots of campers were milling around the green, some laying in the grass with their chocolate frog collections spread out around them, some of them crossing the area to go to their cabins after lunch or to their other activities. The blue Vermont sky was cloudy, but he hoped the rain would hold off long enough for them to have their race. JR grabbed his towel at end end and glanced around the grounds, trying to spy Tomie's standout shiny dark hair. Where was she? The thought occurred to him that she might have found other better plans, but he shrugged away the idea. She was just as competitive as he was so she probably wouldn't forget the challenge as easily.
He smiled smugly to himself as he thought of the upcoming race. JR hadn't kayaked much before this camp and the camp lake wasn't that big, but he felt like he had picked it up quick enough over the past few weeks to be able to give him the edge over her. He wondered if he should try to do some kind of upper body warm up before they started though. Glancing around to see if her saw her, JR dropped down and did ten quick push ups before jumping back up and looking around to see if anyone had spied him preparing. He wanted to win.
