It was almost like she was sleeping with the enemy, though the mere thought made her want to throw up in her mouth.
High heels
click-clacked on the broken cobblestones of Paris as Charlotte broke into a jog. She didn't know the general guidelines for being "fashionably late" but she thought anything more than ten minutes was actually just plain rude.
As the traffic stopped, she huffed a breath as she swung her curtain of dark hair over her shoulders and crossed, weaving in and out of the locals and tourists alike as she could see her destination not that far away. The invitation had actually come as a complete surprise to Lottie and she'd read (and re-read) the card to make sure she wasn't hallucinating. The card said an
intimate gathering but in fashion terms, did that mean ten people? Or a hundred?
Lottie hadn't met Audrey before sending in her article - she thought it was unfair to judge her the same way as she had Harlan, simply because they were related. The older woman seemed very busy and at times, Lottie found herself just being swept up in her whirlwind because she seemed very sure of herself. Correspondence had been by post and the magazine owner seemed pretty cool, though she didn't know how cool she'd be seen as when Harlan found out.
Checking the invitation and the elegantly lit up sign depicting the hotel, she stepped inside. A whoosh of warm air made her skin tingle as soft piano music filtered through the lobby area as her big bright eyes looked around before spying a smartly dressed man by the stairs. "
Bonsoir," she said brightly as she scuttled over. "I'm looking for the
Oui event? Here you go," she said as she brandished her invitation, which the member of staff took as well as her coat and gave her directions.
The ballroom, he'd said. Fancy.
Thanking him and clearing her throat, she fluffed up her long dark hair and climbed the stairs, taking a moment to revel in the sumptuous softness of the carpet beneath her feet. This place was
nice. She liked this Audrey already.
Along the hallway she walked, her
dress trailed behind her as she finally reached the ballroom and stepped inside. Charlotte didn't know anyone here and she wasn't planning on staying long. She wanted to say hello, thank Audrey in person, maybe snag a free glass of something and be on her way. She had no reason to cancel and she didn't know what else she was going to do on a chilly October night.
Taking a glass of something bubbly off a tray, she looked around. People seemed very familiar with one another and there were a lot of air kisses going on, causing Lottie to smirk behind the rim of her glass. The lighting, she noticed, was very forgiving. All crystals and candlelight. It was warm inside and she wondered if there would be nibbles available later on.
Sipping her drink, she peered around the crowd before seeing someone standing off centre, looking like he'd just seen a ghost. Catching his eye, she simply smiled and offered him a quick two-fingered salute before stepping back and into the throng of people to find his sister.
