[Background Information] The Hospital Wing
« on: July 12, 2019, 03:31:47 PM »
OOC: This page is currently in the process of being reformatted after the original post got lost.

The Space:

The hospital wing is located on the first floor, equally distant from all four houses, and close to the entrance that is usually taken to the Quidditch Pitch. This is so injured Quidditch players have a clear path to the hospital wing, for easy access. The large wing is divided into three spaces; the infirmary, Madam Pomfrey's office and quarters, and the storerooms. As with the rest of the castle, the ceiling is quite high, and arched. The entire wing is charmed to be ventilated, and the air is constantly run through a magical filter designed to filter the air from standard magical bugs and viruses. The filter is not full-proof, but it does prevent many cases of patients falling ill from visiting the infirmary. The filter is the same used in St. Mungo's, and was purchased at the request of Madam Pomfrey.

If Madam Pomfrey is in the hospital wing, the door is open. If the door is closed, there is an emergency parchment with instructions, and a list of rules. If there is an emergency, the patient (or person accompanying them) needs only to collapse on the door, yell emergency, or tap twice on the parchment. Poppy is then immediately alerted, and will use the nearest fireplace to floo directly into the hospital wing. If there is no emergency, yet a student would like to see Madam Pomfrey, they need only to sign their name. This alerts Poppy in a gentle way, and she is able to make her way to the hospital wing without hurrying.

The infirmary is the largest room; when one enters there are chairs lining the walls immediately to the left and right. In case there is a wait to see the nurse, students can sit and wait on the chairs. There are eight large windows, almost as tall as the ceiling, on the walls to the left, and eight windowless panels to the right. Between each window is a bed, with a nightstand beside it, and a divider for privacy. In addition, next to each bed is exactly one chair, for visitors. This is to discourage more than one visitor, though technically up to six are allowed. If needed, either a visitor takes a chair from the front of the room, or draws one up with their wand.

There is nothing in the middle of the room between the beds, to allow for easy transfer of patients. Next to the last bed at the back of the room, to the left, is the door to the storeroom. Next to the last bed on the right are the patient bathrooms. In the back of the room is Poppy’s desk. Behind the desk is the entrance to her office/sitting room. The office is usually open, but when it is closed Poppy can see out to the infirmary but others can not see into the office. On the back wall of the office is a larger than normal fireplace that is connected directly to St. Mungo's. It is designed for the transfer of patients, lying down, to St. Mungo's, if needs be.  On the left wall of her office, is the door to Madam Pomfrey's living quarters.

The storeroom is a rather small room, hardly larger than a broom cupboard. Shelves line the walls from top, to bottom. The door to the storeroom is password protected, yet is able to be opened by saying the word "emergency", in case the contents need to be quickly accessed by someone other than Madam Pomfrey, in a time of emergency. The topmost shelves on each wall holds reserve stocks of ingredients for healing potions. The left wall holds potions for physical injuries and animal bites. The right wall holds potions for poisonings and magical ailments. The back wall, the smallest, holds all of the emergency stocks of life-saving potions for trauma patients, such as Skele-Gro, Heart Start Slime, and Blood Replenishing Potion. All of the administrative needs of the hospital wing, such as sheets and pillows, Zinky brings from the general Hogwarts stores. Sectioned off on the back shelf, as well, is a small section that holds all of the potions that could easily be abused, yet are not life-saving; sleeping potions, pepper-up potion. These are sealed in a box, and password protected. Poppy is the only one who knows the password and can access these potions.

Poppy’s office:

Poppy's office and sitting room is also quite large, but very homey, and filled with personal touches. The door is charmed so that when closed, one cannot see into the office from the infirmary, yet from within the office the door is transparent, and Poppy is able to see everything that is going on, while the students cannot see her. This is useful for when she needs some quiet time, or has paperwork to do; she is able to concentrate without anyone bothering her, yet she is also able to keep an eye out on her patients at all times. In the middle of the room is a nice sitting area with two comfortable chairs and a nice coffee table.

There is a large bookshelf adorned with various scrolls; here Poppy keeps all of her records. There isn't one injury, no matter how minor, that Poppy doesn't record. She writes down the date, time, injury, name, age, year and house of the student. These records are then organized by year. In addition, in the beginning of each term Poppy creates a file for each and every student. The moment Poppy records an injury, that injury is automatically recorded in the that student's record, by help of a replication charm. That way Poppy is able to keep track of each student's medical history. Poppy also has a file for each staff member, complete with medical history. All of these files are unreadable to anyone but her, unless they utter the word "emergency"; this is to ensure that during an emergency situation a different healer could have access to the information they need on a certain student, or staff member.

Next to the bookshelf of records, there is also a bookshelf filled with medical books, and journals. Poppy's collection is ever growing, as she seeks to learn and improve her skills. To the left of the office is another storage room that houses a large cauldron, and work station for brewing potions. Many of the potions Poppy uses are bought from various healing and potion shops, yet she finds it easier sometimes to brew her own, especially if the ingredients can be found in Hogwarts. In addition, sometimes potions have to be altered, for example if the person is only part human, such as Hagrid, healing potions must be adjusted. On rare occasions there is a special injury, such as Ron's dragon bite, where the antidote is not usually held in her stores, so she makes the potion from scratch. This is also to protect the patient's privacy; ordering the potion itself would raise suspicion.

Poppy’s quarters:

The right wall of Poppy’s office is seemingly totally blank, yet has a hidden door. The door only shows itself when the password "Cepheus" is uttered, and then opened only by uttering another password, "Rosalia". This door leads to Madam Pomfrey's personal sleeping quarters. The room has a four poster bed, rather larger than those that the students sleep in; it can easily fit two people, and is more comfortable. Also in the room is a small fireplace, not nearly big enough for floo travel. Next to her bedroom is the bathroom; the door opens up to a small area that has the toilet and sink, and another door opens up to the shower.  Poppy uses the sitting area in her office as her sitting room when she has guests over for tea. The potion making storeroom also functions as a small kitchenette; a cupboard charmed to cool down food, a small oven with stove top which runs on magic as well, and a small amount of counter space. The kitchenette is hardly ever used; Poppy usually eats her meals with the rest of the school at the Great Hall. Nevertheless, the kitchenette is stocked with the essentials for making coffee, tea, and houses some biscuits as well. Poppy decorated her quarters with all sorts of art that she picked up from her travels; much of the wall is covered, yet it remains in good taste. Her linens are from abroad as well; fine silks, colorful patterns.

OOC note: this page is currently undergoing construction

The Hospital Wing
School Nurse: Madam Pomfrey

If this is an emergency, please tap on this piece of paper twice, yell "emergency", or fall on the door.

If this is not an emergency, and you would like to see the school nurse, please sign with the attached quill on the space below. Your signature will immediately disappear, and the nurse will be with you shortly.

The Rules

  • Students may arrive to the hospital wing independently
  • Up to six visitors per patient, and a total of thirty visitors total at any given time in the hospital wing allowed, absolutely no exceptions.
  • The nurse reserves the right to decrease the amount of visitors allowed for a particular patient, set visiting hours, change visiting hours, kick out any and all visitors, to her discretion.
  • No patient is allowed to leave the hospital wing for any reason at all, unless given permission by the school nurse. Meals will be provided for patients in the hospital wing.
  • No student is allowed to perform magic in the hospital wing, except in case of emergency, or with permission by the school nurse
  • No animals allowed in the hospital wing, including, but not limited to cats, dogs, owls, toads, and rats.
  • Patients who are in need of assistance need only tap the bell near their bed
  • Patients who wish to visit the lavatory, yet are unable to walk to it, need only tap the bell near their bed and utter "loo", and they will be transported to the lavatory.

OOC rules and information:

Madam Pomfrey is usually in the hospital wing during the day, and at night. If she is not in the hospital wing (ie during meals) there will be a notice posted on the door of the hospital wing with instructions
Students can arrive independently to the hospital wing, but are likely to seek out a Professor if there is an emergency, especially if they are a younger student
Please note that Madam Pomfrey is unlikely to allow students to loiter in the hospital wing. They must be either a patient, or visiting a patient, or they will get in trouble with Madam Pomfrey
Please sign up your patient below using the form. You do not have to thread with Madam Pomfrey to have a thread in the hospital wing, thought I am open and happy to thread with her if you wish. Alternately you can just request what treatment Madam Pomfrey would administer (ie how long in the Hospital Wing? What kind of potions?), and play that out. Please do not NPC Madam Pomfrey; just mention the treatment she administered.
You can also contact me ( @Maya ) via PM, my shipper or sandbox to plot threads with Madam Pomfrey.

Patient’s Name :
Chief complaints/symptoms :
Level of involvement : Do you want a thread with Poppy, Poppy to jump in for one post, or just a diagnosis/treatment plan?

OOC info: this page is currently being updated (formatting)

The internship program:

The internship program at Hogwart’s hospital wing started when an ambitious student, @Ben Fletcher approached Madam Pomfrey about learning the art of Healing. Any student who is interested in the magical medical field may intern with Madam Pomfrey. Typically this would happen in a student’s 5-7th year as they start thinking seriously about their future careers, but Madam Pomfrey won’t turn down a student of any age. Internships typically last as long as the student desires, and can therefore span multiple years. The internship starts out with Madam Pomfrey giving students some of the more menial tasks involved in a Healing career: organizing the hospital wing, taking inventory, readying supplies. This is so students can be introduced to some of the less glamorous aspects of a career in Healing, and to gauge how serious the student is in pursuing this path. After a few months of this, Poppy will start to teach the student some more mundane healing tasks; bandaging, mixing salves, spells for checking a patient’s vital signs. As the student progresses, Madam Pomfrey will teach them healing spells such as fever reducing spells, bone repairing spells and the like. At first, interns practice on magical dummies, and only after demonstrating skill and dedication, are students allowed to do basic tasks on patients. This can only happen if the patient consents to an intern and fellow school mate treating them.

The intensity of the internship is up to the student. For example, the internship could involve one evening a week in the Hospital Wing, or three evenings a week and weekends. All that Poppy requires is consistency. If a student says they will come once a week, she expects to see them there once a week, otherwise they will be dismissed from the internship program. The internship program can be put on a student’s dossier as they prepare to apply for a healing school, and excellent interns will also be provided with a letter of recommendation by Madam Pomfrey.

OOC information: You are not obligated to play out the internship in a thread, but I would of course be happy to do so. If you would like your character to be part of the internship program, please fill out the form below:

Character’s name:
Reasons for wanting to intern: ie is it their dream to be a Healer/Mediwizard/Medinurse? Are they doing this because they’re curious? Because their parents want them to?
How involved is your character: ie. How often are they likely to commit to coming to the Hospital Wing? Are they going to honor their commitments?
Do you want a thread?: You can always change your mind!
