[solved] Equivalent of "Emergency Medicine"?
« on: May 16, 2014, 12:31:05 AM »
Hihi! =]

Just curious if there was a HP-universe/ Healing equivalent of Emergency Medicine or an Emergency Department? I know there are different floors in St. Mungo's for different types of injuries, so I wasn't really sure how that would work... But I do know my guy would strongly prefer the high-pressure jack-of-all-trades job description that comes with Emergency Medicine.

Thanks in advance! <33

Murph's specialization, or one of them is triage/emergency medicine.
He doesn't work at Mungos, but I was of the mind that maybe the ground floor, maybe?

^ this

A mediwizard is the wizarding equivalent to a medic.

A Healer is the wizarding world equivalent of a Muggle doctor.

Even though we only have the Healer tag, he would be like a mediwizard. Because Healers specialize in different areas of expertise, where mediwizards do almost everything. They were mentioned in the Goblet of Fire as field doctors during the Quidditch World Cup.

Ooh I see... I always associated Medis with EMTs only or like "trainers" (for instance when an athlete gets hurt on the field), considering EMT qualifications are very different from residents/ full-blown attending physicians (i.e. those that have an MD or DO degree). I work in a hospital ER so I guess I just thought of it differently - I see ER residents/attendings as a sort of middle-ground between EMTs and inpatient doctors, but much closer to the latter end of the spectrum because of the degree qualifications.

That's exactly what I was thinking, actually.

Yup, makes sense. Like I mentioned, I think I was just a bit confused because there isn't a clear equivalent in the HP universe cause ER docs are a unique "breed" of medicine haha. Emergency Medicine is its own specialty, but as they get the hand-off from the EMTs they're still doing a lot of the urgent care work. I think I'm also a bit more picky than most because, as mentioned, I work in an ER so I see those distinctions/ job delegations/ degree requirements more distinctly haha.

I guess what I'm trying to ask is, what can I list as his Healing specialty? Would "Emergency Medicine/ Triage" work?

Thanks for the input, everyone!

Yes, that sounds fine. He's basically the equivalent of doctor-level rather than paramedic-level from what you're saying, so that makes perfect sense :)

I see what you're saying. Like there are MDs whose speciality is trauma, and indeed hospitals that have trauma centers (in addition to the ER) but emts are Pre Hospital Trauma Life Support.

I would assume that in the wizarding world mediwizards would be able to take care of most trauma by use of spell, ie blood clotting, blood replenishing, etc. Complications arising from this I would assume would need a doctor; and of course any spell damage would need a healer.

Yup! My thoughts exactly. ^^

I'll go ahead and mark this as "solved". <33
