“Oh really?” she asked, leaning in a little, a smug smiled creeping onto her lips. The woman’s blue eyes flicked over to her brown-eyed friend momentarily before settling back on the man in front of her. “Ministry man?” Elaine hated the ministry. Eva wondered if Elaine had known that he was in the… what was it? Administrative Registration Committee. She also wondered what the hell that meant, and why the man in front of her was still here. Her blue eyes watched him with a sort of smug curiosity – Eva felt like she could turn this around, if she wanted to. She felt like they could flirt and brush knees under the table and the evening could have a very different ending to the one she’d imagined moments ago.

But she didn’t want that.

So instead, Eva diverted her attention to Elaine, snubbing this newcomer with her body language as she turned slightly. Eva wondered distantly if Elaine was enjoying the attention, or if she wanted this man gone as much as she did. “I’ve been in Australia,” Eva answered, despite the fact that Adam’s question was aimed (rudely) at Elaine. Australia was only half an answer, but the purple haired girl got the feeling that this idiot wouldn’t be staying around for long, so she didn’t bother giving him a fuller answer. Instead, Eva just thought about the dragonologist she’d met in the desert and about the stories she’d be telling Elaine once he was gone.  She ignored the question about what she did for work.

She blinked when he asked another question; he matched her pointedness, turning her own question on her. Eva raised one inquisitive eyebrow – hadn’t they just explained that they were friends? Their relationship was far from the hetero-norm, Eva thought distantly. She shouldn’t blame him for not understanding. “Yes, I think you should,” Eva answered smoothly, barely sparing him a glance as he got up from his chair to leave. Instead of watching their goodbye, she just sipped at her tea serenely and waited for him to go and for Elaine to come back to her.
