well, we rushed it, moving way too fast
that we crushed it but it's in the past.

Jessica was itching to try one of those cocktails.

Standing to one side, the Auror nervously chewed on a full lower lip as her big dark eyes tracked the path of the fruity drinks as they made their way through the guests. Her dilemma was twofold. One, she was working and two, she hadn't had a sip of alcohol in the past three years and she didn't really want to torpedo her good run tonight. Instead, a glass of sparkling water with a wedge of lime in it occupied her slim fingers as she tilted her head.

This place was absolutely beautiful. It wasn't a party; it was an actual experience. There was a faint oooh! from the guests as a shooting star streaked across the ceiling. Jess wasn't stupid and she didn't really believe in those sorts of things but she closed her eyes and made a wish on it regardless, just like her grandmother used to do.

It had been an awfully long time since Jessica had really been in the field. Since her wobble ("wobble" was the term everyone started using after she had a nervous breakdown following The Battle), she'd been confined to a desk. She liked menial tasks. She liked routines and paperwork because there weren't any surprises involved in them. Repetition was relaxing but familiarity often bred contempt. So, here she was, in the magical place of Singapore, digging for dirt on a Minister of Magic that she really shouldn't be messing with.

She was a cynical person but she wasn't the only one to think this entire thing was a bit…fishy. Why had the Japanese Ministry decided to hold the event and why here? Why were they riding the coattails of the World Cup? Were there dodgy dealings beneath the glitz and glamour of tonight? A distraction? A seedy underbelly? From where she'd been standing, she hadn't seen anyone really leave. They'd all sort of stayed put, drinking and eating. They looked content but they were also cornered. At least to her they seemed to be. Everyone was accounted for.

Her long dark curls were up and out of her face and twisted into a sleek, shiny chignon at the base of her neck. Her gown was of the palest pink in an off the shoulder cut, hugging her curves and falling to the floor. It was simple and plain, only her diamond stud earrings reflected the light. The material was surprisingly soft and supple and it swayed when she walked. Compared to some of the crowd, Jessica looked perhaps a little underdressed not drawing her attention was one of her many talents.

She looked up and caught someone's eye. A tall gentleman sailed past, looking spare and comfortable in his formal wear as though he wore it every day. Jessica offered him a smile before diverting her gaze but she could still feel his on the back of her head. In all fairness, this would be the perfect place to hook up with someone. People could slip away. There were plenty of dark alcoves and that, mixed with copious amounts of alcohol, was a recipe for disaster. Not that she was the type, of course. Her mother was Spanish but her father was so fiercely English, all of the Latina in her had been stomped out of her at an early age. Except for her terrible temper and her ability to keep a beat.

While she was unlucky in love, Jessica was actually fairly good at winning things. She usually won on scratch cards and every day things, like always being able to catch a taxi and finding clothing on sale that is just in her perfect size. As a result, she'd entered a few raffles this evening. One of the prizes was a Japanese spa experience. She'd never had one but the idea of a massage seemed like Heaven on Earth.

Jessica sipped at her water, her arms folded across her chest and the glass hanging loosely from her fingertips as she looked around. She was unfamiliar with the music but that didn't mean that she wasn't enjoying it. It was a little after nine in the evening and the food was in the process of being finished with. She'd had a delicately spiced chicken laksa that was worth the visit to Singapore again, if not only to have another bowl of it. From what she'd heard, there were to be fireworks at some point. While she'd like to go and see the spectacle, that wasn't why she was here. At least she didn't know anyone here that could blow her cover.
