It was Christmas eve, so late it would be Christmas morning in another half hour. Rhiannon was already in bed, or at least in her room; Cliona was nowhere to be seen since she had wandered off after dinner muttering something about wrapping presents. Dermod sincerely hoped the tomatoes she would invariable gift to the entire estate tomorrow morning - elves included - wouldn't be in such an advanced stage of decomposition as they had been last year. The writer had no such concerns. He had had the elves wrap almost everything he had purchased the previous day, and Gabriella's main gift...well, that wasn't something that could be encased in shiny paper or ribbons. Nonetheless, he had retired to his study an hour or so earlier when his wife had intimated that she needed a little time alone. Assuming she wanted to wrap a gift for him, he had gladly obliged. But now the hour was getting late and normally he would hear her getting ready for bed by now.

"Sorrel!" there was a cracking sound as the elf appeared, bowing low. There was flour on the elf's hands - they would all be up most of the night, preparing food for tomorrow. He was looking forward to Christmas dinner more than he had for many years. "Where is Gabriella?" he asked without preamble, and was slightly disconcerted to hear that "Mistress has gone outside. Immediately his mind was cast involuntarily back to almost three months earlier, when he had found her on the clifftop in the middle of the night. Surely she hadn't...but the thought was banished immediately. There was nothing in Gabriella's behaviour to suggest she was anything less than happy, especially now that Rhiannon was home for the holidays. But it did make him wonder..."Sorrel, why is she in the grounds at this hour?"

The elf looked abashed, clearly hoping not to have this conversation. Dermod raised an eyebrow and waited. Two seconds pased, then three, and then, with a gulp, he was told that 'someone' had failed to find 'something' earlier in the day and had only now confessed to the misdemeanour. With a sigh, the writer dismissed the head elf and shook his head. Had Gabriella been less attached to her own elf he would have suggested it be put out of its misery by now...but for the fact that Kit was clearly happy and for the most part coped very well despite being almost blind. But he had put the pieces together. Kit had failed to find something, or had dropped something and Gabriella, instead of chastising the elf and sending it outside again, and gone herself.

So it was that Dermod donned his own thickest cloak and, just before midnight found himself in the grounds. It was a peaceful night, though biting cold; the skies clear and bright, the moon having passed its fullest point a few nights earlier. Years of wandering the grounds after dark meant Dermod needed no extra light, though naturally he carried his wand. It had rained the previous day and the ground was soft - soft enough that even Gabriella's small feet and delicate build had left imprints in the frosted grass. He followed the trail as it led to the edge of the rose gardens - well kept though barren now that winter was in full flow - and then around to the shrubbery where he found his wife, on her hands and knees, evidently searching for whatever it was that had been mislaid. A smile on his lips, he approached to within a few paces before clearing his throat.

Knowing that Rhiannon had in the past gone looking for her christmas gifts, Gabriella had kit hide a box containing several smaller gifts that wouldn’t be hurt by the cold in the run down shed near the barn that was being remodeled. She had doubted the girl would think to look there. Naturally, christmas eve was the perfect time to retrieve them, and Kit had the box ready for her after dinner. The three had gone their separate ways, presumably all doing the exact same thing. Although if Rhiannon had finished wrapping her gifts, she was more then likely to be curled up with the book Gabriella had gotten her. It was a simple little tradition she’d started about two years after she moved in, writing a letter to grandmother Costello with the title of the book she wanted in early December, before giving it to her at dinner, so she could read herself to sleep and calm the overwhelming excitement for the following morning. This time however, Gabriella had been able to buy the book herself, for which she was proud.

But after wrapping all the gifts, she’d realized something was missing. She’d gotten the girl a charm bracelet, and it wasn’t where it was supposed to be. There was a cute little R with her birthstone in the center, a rose, a book, and a slytherin house crest on it. Gabriella loved the idea, because it meant every christmas and birthday she could get her another charm for it. But now it wasn’t there, and kit’s helpless Gesturing was no good. It must have fallen out of the box. And with Kit’s poor eyesight, the elf probably hadn’t even noticed. It would have been foolish to send Kit back out now, with the darkness and his vision, there was no way he’d find it.so grabbing her winter coat, and a thick, warm hat, gabriella had headed out herself, the tip of her wand aglow as she searched for the glittering silver jewelry amongst the dew. Why kit hadn’t just popped back, Gabriella didn’t know. But apparently her elf liked the cold, so she suspected he’d walked back with the intention of enjoying it. But that meant re-tracing the path he’d taken from the shed to the house.

Fortunately the little footsteps were easily seen, and even the impressions of the cloth wrapped around his feet were visible in the frost. It was easy to see that the bracelet was not along the path to the now dormant  rose garden, but where Kit had taken a shortcut through the underbrush, Gabriella let out a sigh. It was a good thirty or forty feet, and his prints were gone, the frost settling on the brush rather then the ground. With a sigh, the welsh witch circled around to the other side. Finding where Kit’s feet re-emerged, Gabriella had a good guess where the elf had gone, and began her search, methodically shaking bushes to see if it had snagged, and listening for the clinking of metal and crystal together, hoping she’d hear it, or see it fall from a branch. She was also searching the ground, very carefully looking for the expensive bracelet.

It wasn’t until the sound of a throat clearing that Gabriella realized she wasn’t alone, and lept to her feet with a startled squeak, wand outstretched in front of her and lighting her face in a pleasant glow, eyes wide before she realized who it was. Of course she should have realized it would be her husband, wondering what the hell she was doing outside. Again. But he was smiling, and she also smiled sheepishly. “You know if you-- our daughter didn’t have a bad habit of looking for her gifts prematurely, i wouldn’t have to hide them in my garden shed...” of course Rhiannon had been good lately, but gabriella wasn’t taking any risks. Her best gifts were always hidden. A sad look crossed her face, and she sighed. “His eyes are getting worse...” she reluctantly admitted.

Dermod's lips twitched, and he resisted the temptation to point out that this quite clearly was not the garden shed. But now wasn't the time for humour, not when it was so late and Gabriella could get chilled... the smile broadened as he rememberd how they had warmed up last time he'd found her out in the ground late at night. Of course, last time, Rhiannon hadn't been home, and the elves hadn't been working flat out in the kitchens. Pity. Instead, he crouched down beside his wife. She was using her wand, granted...but only as a light to search for the missing gift. Had he known what it was, Dermod would have solved the problem himself. But he knew his wife well; after so long without using a wand, she had likely forgotten that it should be the first solution to a problem, not an afterthought. Once, he might have been appalled to find her rooting through the undergrowth like a squib, but now he simply found it endearing.

"You know, the search might be faster if you tried a summoning charm" he suggested gently, but with a glint of amusement in his eyes. He had other suggestions too, such 'retiring' her elf seeing as it clearly couldn't be trusted any longer, but he also knew what a reaction that would likely provoke. Instead he said, with what was hopefully the right touch of reluctance "Perhaps you should restrict the elf to indoor duties - or at least ensure he's accompanied at all times" He then allowed the matter to rest there, letting his wife find the missing object in her own time. Knowing she had only owned this wand for a couple of months he allowed his mind to wander rather than watching what she was doing.

He realised that the air had gone very still, the wind that so often whistled around the Schull castle entirely absent now. All around them there was silence; no breeze ruffled the naked branches of the trees or the leaves of the evergreen shrubs. The sky was overcast and yet heavy even in the darkness, as if... As they faced each other in the darkness, a snowflake landed on Gabriella's hat, glistened for a moment, and then melted. Dermod watched, fascinated. It snowed here so rarely, perhaps ten days every winter, and most of those were little more than brief flurries that melted and were gone without trace within a couple of hours. Another fell, and another...one landed on a curl of hair that peeked out from beneath her hat and he reached out to brush it away. "We should get back inside..." he started to say, meaning once Gabriella had retrieved whatever-it-was, but at that moment the unexpected snowfall, as if anticipating his words, began to quicken. Within the space of a minute, the skies had gone form clear to loaded with seasonal promise.

Dermod did a quick calculation. They could go back to the castle, but it was suddenly cold enough that the snow was likely to start laying, and by morning it could be thick, too thick to walk in the grounds, which would mean one of his main Christmas gifts would remain undiscoverd until the weather improved. "Come on, the stables are closer" he said, straightening up and offering his left hand to help her up. If she found the suggestion strange, he could always spin some tale about the stablemaster having gone to bed early and he thought she would want to check on the horses and make sure they were warm enough for the night...

Gabriella straightened up as his gaze fell to her wand, then blushed. Of course. That would have been the logical solution, but of course she hadn’t thought about it. “Well yes… but...” she was about to say that she had no light, but truthfully, it hadn’t even occurred to her at all that this was an option. She’d been about to flick her wand, and cast the spell she needed to find the misplaced gift, when a snowflake fluttered past her eye and she stopped, looking up. “Dermod! Christmas Snow!” there was almost childlike glee in her voice at the thought, before she looked around her and saw the white stuff already starting to stick to the frosted over and frozen grounds. “It’ll be all white by morning!” there was a light in her eyes that had been slowly returning over the past few months, even as she’d been sick through most of november. It hadn’t interfered with her regaining her sense of enjoyment.

“Accio Charm Bracelet.” her voice was clear and concise, her wand movements as well practiced as could be expected from any former Ravenclaw. A shrub shuddered, knocking its scattering of snow to the ground as the silver piece of jewelry flew into her hand. She smiled and looked back over to Dermod to show him the bracelet before noting that there was indeed a good bit of snow already accumulating on his hat. The castle was close, and if they ran, they could make it. But with her knees and ankles bothering her the way they had been the past week or so she wasn’t sure she could make it. And her husband wasn’t exactly the running sort…

“Alright. The barn it is.” she took his hand and pulled herself closer to him, allowing him to lead them quickly through the brush towards the partially rebuilt stable block. Half had been completed, and was shielded from the elements by a dividing wall, with six stalls contained within. The other half was still being worked on,  but the first part was what had mattered. “You know, there was mention of a tunnel leading towards the house on the unfinished side… we can probably get back that way.” she added hopefully. Anything to keep them from getting lost in what was looking like it might turn into a wild blizzard.

The snow was falling heavily now, already beginning to carpet the grounds with a thin layer of white that shimmered in the frosty night. Dermod was glad that Gabriella had retrieved what she was looking for - a charm bracelet for Rhiannon, presumably similar to the one his wife loved so much. It was a lovely gesture, and he was glad she'd thought of it. While the writer was confident in his gift-buying abilities, he was glad that he could once again restrict his gifts to new books, quills, parchments and other literary-based gifts that he thought his daughter would appreciate. Naturally there was a pile of more than a dozen new volumes wrapped with his daughter's name on them, together with the set of quills she'd mentioned admiring a few weeks earlier and several other interesting items Dermod considered to be small extra gifts. For Gabriella there were just two neatly-wrapped items, but that was because... he smiled and nodded as she tucked the bracelet safely away. He could admire it later, once they were back inside the castle and before it too was wrapped.

But for now...the smile didn't drop from his face as he led them to the stable block. Only half-repaired for now, it was nonetheless obvious that it had once been an imposing structure. The walls were thick and brick-built now; magically enhanced to keep out the elements entirely and due to the smaller internal stalls, actually a little warmer than the unheated parts of the castle. Of course, more of the castle was heated this year. Not just because they'd perfected the art of entirely masking the smell of smoke but because there was a new inhabitant. Dermod had surprised himself at how easily he had agreed to Gabriella's old squib stablemaster coming to live on the estate. Once the idea would have been unthinkable, but now it seemed natural that someone should be on site to look after the horses. He didn't even expect the old man to live in the stables - at least not at this time of the year.

They were approaching the building when Gabriella spoke again, Dermod opened his mouth to reply, got a taste of fresh snow, and contented himself with a grunt and a nod for the moment. The tunnel had indeed existed. In fact, it did still exist, if one enjoyed musty, damp-smelling corridors in which one had to bend low in order to avoid getting one's head completely covered in decades-old cobwebs. Still, it would probably be preferable to the snow, and it was certainly passable. In the past week the Irishman had spent a good deal of time down here when it had been assumed he was in his study. From the outside, the stable block looked as it had when they had first brought Gabriella's hourse back from her former family home. But inside...

Gabriella would be expecting to see three of the stalls occupied, and the empty ones to be a similar size. Not a carefully screened off section further back that would contain larger stalls that were also occupied... He lifted the latch to the stable door and stepped aside to allow Gabriella inside first, swiftly following and relatching it behind them. Silently he cast lumos, sending a warm sphere of light up to hover near the roof. Enough so that they could see but not so that they horses would be shocked into wakefulness. Nonetheless, there was soft snorting coming from the far end of the stables, beyond where any animals should have been. "We should check on the horses now we're here" he said quietly, a curious smile playing on his lips "I think one of them is awake."

Gabriella was surprised at the amount of work that had been done in the past few days. She’d just been here, and yet it seemed like Dermod and the stablemaster had been quite busy. This side of the barn was completely finished, and the other side had at least a semblance of  a roof now, keeping it clear of the snow, though it wasn’t quite complete yet, and still quite run down. She turned and looked at Dermod suspiciously. He was grinning like the cat that swallowed the canary, and her eyes narrowed. “What did you do...” she asked him, soft, so as not to disturb the horses.

There were of course the three stalls that contained their horses, and there were supposed to be three more. But from what she could see through the screen, there were only two, and they were occupied. But by what she didn’t know. “Dermod...” she teased softly, “you know i can only ride one horse at a time, yes?” she asked, slowly walking towards the screen. She was careful to keep her voice down and her steps even, the horses were sleeping, and she had no desire to disturb them. Stepping beyond the veil, a soft gasp escaped her lips, her back pressed against the cool stone wall of the barn wall, amazed at what she was seeing.

Thestrals

“Dermod you...” her voice was a whisper, as she turned and looked back to him. “You got… but where, how...” she looked back again, and slowly took a step forwards to the creatures as one lifted its sleepy head to look at her curiously. She was entranced, having not seen one since Hogwarts, and had quite honestly been amazed that she’d been able to at all. But she’d had long talks with the stablemaster when she’d been a child, after having witnessed his wife’s fall, and suspected that those talks had helped both the older man, and the young girl come to terms with the woman’s tragic end.  “Oh dermod they’re lovely… a male and a female...” it was then that she realized what he had done, and why he’d been so insistent that they come to the barn even though they could have made it to the house, maybe. With the snowfall, it would have been hard to make it back out here, short of the tunnel which the aging squib used to reach the barn in inclement weather. “They’re a mated pair, aren’t they?” she asked, knowing he wouldn’t have opted for anything less.

Gabriella’s attention returned to the skeletal creature in front of her, holding out her hand for it. It touched her hand with its nose, and she almost forgot her husband was there, her whole attention on the terrifyingly beautiful creature in front of her.

He simply nodded in response to her question about being able to ride more than one horse at a time, the same smile playing across his lips. Dermod wasn't usually good at gifts, or at surprises, but on this occasion he was confident that he was going to get a favourable response, and so he waited while Gabriella made her way further into the newly-renovated stable block. It wasn't until she turned and spoke that he moved to join her, eyes drifting first from the expression on his wife's face to the creatures that now resided alongside the three ordinary horses. He enjoyed her surprise, her delight, her questions... her total fascination with the thestrals to the point that she temporarily forgot her was there...yes, even this he enjoyed. It had been far too long since they had had something to smile about.

"They were bred in France. A certain family deals in rare horses. I heard of them through a contact and persuaded them that Ireland would be a suitable home for them." there was a good deal more to the tale than that, of course. Once Dermod had learned that Gabriella's love of horses was as great as it had ever been, he had started to consider not just what would make a suitably extravagant Christmas gift, but also what would be particularly impressive when dropped into conversation. He was standing directly behind her now, watching as the male of the pair nosed her hand and then stepped back with a slight snort. After a moment, it returned to nuzzling her hand. Dermod hoped the creature wouldn't take it into its mind to bite... Then the female's eyes opened and she realised something was happening. Only half a hand smaller than her mate, she came forward too, lowering her nose to snort curiously at Dermod's hair. he raise a hand to push her back and she nuzzled that, instead. It seemed as if the rumour that they were gentle beast once one got past their bizarre appearance was true.

"They don't have names yet...I thought you'd like to choose" he added as they stood observing the skeletal beasts "and they have been ridden, though we should probably wait until morning before you try..." There were other things to consider as well; more mundane matters that certainly weren't worth discussing in a stable at midnight. Like the fact he'd managed to bypass the Ministry's usual restrictions on importing magical creatures (the O'Driscoll name and rather lurid history of magical imports was still remembered in certain circles, and had proven useful on this occasion); and as the thestrals would be residing on an estate that was inaccessible to muggles, there was far less danger of them being spotted by prying eyes. Of course, the standard disillusionment charms would need to be performed if they were to be ridden outside the estate, but that was a concern for another time.

The female thestral had tired of Dermod's hair and was now leaning close to the male. Clearly she was less than impressed at being woken so late simply to be admired by a couple of small things with two legs. Dermod slid an arm around his wife's shoulders as she continued to admire the beasts and murmured "Merry Christmas..."

Gabriella could not have been more thrilled. She didn’t even ask how much they cost, although that thought did cross her mind, from her former life as an overworked accountant. That all seemed so far away now, though it had only been a short five years. The fact that it probably hadn’t even occurred to him to consider the money still boggled her mind, though she herself had grown up in a family where that sort of thing had also been the norm. She herself hadn’t really had much luxury that had been hers. “They’re absolutely wonderful… I shall have to think of suitable names for them, such a thing can’t be decided on the spur of the moment, of course.” she didn’t even ask how Dermod could see them. On top of dragging the conversation down, she had a fairly good inkling. After all, she was probably the only person other than his sister and daughters who knew of the mark on his arm. And she wasn’t even sure that Rhiannon knew.

Sensing that the two wanted to be left alone to go back to sleep, she leaned into her husband and looked up at him with a soft smile. “I supose it is christmas, isn’t it? I’ve no idea how long i was out searching for this--” she held up her wrist, wich was wearing Rhiannon’s bracelet for the time being. “But it wasn’t too much before midnight...” she stood up on the tips of her toes and kissed him sweetly. “Merry christmas. Although we should probably leave them to sleep...” she added, looking out the barn door which they’d left open. She could faintly make out the glow from the castle windows and the vague outline of their home through the pelting snow.

“You know, if we take the tunnel back, we can sneak into the kitchens and finish off the last of the Acorn squash soup we had with dinner.” Gabriella offered, starting to head that way, before stopping and heading instead for the barn doors, which she closed. “Or if you’re not in the mood for a late night snack, I can wrap this and then we can bring all the gifts down to the living room before heading to bed.” a sly little smile left open the implication that she didn’t think they had to go straight to sleep when they got there.

Truth be told Dermod hadn't given much though to naming the beasts. He knew they would need names so they would have something to respond to, but having already named one horse this year his creativity in that field had been depleted. Oh, ask him to write a tale or a plot he could come up with a thousand ideas, and it was much easier to name people, with their personality quirks and behaviours, than mere animals, even ones as majestic as these beasts. "Maybe something will come to you in a dream" he suggested, leaning down to kiss the top of her head. It was a ridiculous idea, but he knew she would enjoy the thought, and right now he would have said just about anything to prolong the peace of the moment.

It was no place to spend the night though, even heated against the snow for the horses as the stable block now was, and he was glad Gabriella chose not to linger out here. He was already a little tired despite the night still being young, at least by the standards of the semi-nocturnal writer. "It must be by now. It was half an hour before midnight when I realised I couldn't hear you upstairs...and you're quite right. I think it's well past the hour when horses and thestrals should be sound asleep." As if answering, there was a soft whickering noise from the other side of the screen, the sound of a horse in comfortable repose. They wouldn't be disturbed further this night.

He followed his wife in the direction of the tunnel. "Why not both? If you wrap that while I bring the gifts downstairs, we can finish the soup in the library before we go to bed" he said agreeably, deciding that an early night would be perfect. Particularly given the quiet glint in Gabriella's eye which suggested that she would be quite happy with an entirely different kind of nocturnal activity later on. They'd reached the entrance to the tunnel and he turned to summon the sphere of light, bringing it slowly towards the tunnel so as not to frighten the horses, smiling as he did so. If someone had told him even a year ago that he would be considerate of animals he would have laughed openly, but now it seemed natural. "The stablemaster sees the thestrals, which is convenient." he said in a conversational tone as they stepped into the passageway "He only had to hold onto the doorframe for a couple of minutes the first time he saw them..."

Gabriella enjoyed the idea that he’d suggested, smiling as he pressed his lips against her hair, leaning against him for a moment before taking care of the door and reuniting with him at the entrance to the tunnel. Her chest felt like it was going to burst, overwhelmed by the care and thoughtfulness that had been put into her christmas gift.  Her own gift for him would pale in comparison, but she supposed that his birthday present a month earlier more then made up for it. A gentle smile remaining on her lips, Gabriella took her husband’s hand as he helped her step down into the underground tunnel. A flick of her wand and a murmured spell clearing it of cobwebs and dust, at least as far as the light could see.

“An Excellent idea of course.” she commented as they walked, her arm wrapped around his. The tunnel was tall enough for them to walk upright without dermod’s hair brushing against the ceiling, and just barely wide enough for them to move side by side. It helped that Gabriella was as petite as she was. “Although you’re going to have to stop trying to feed me five meals a day.” she teased. “I’ve been feeling so bloated lately. Like a balloon.” her smile turned teasing as she rested her head against his arm.

“So I'll finish wrapping my gifts while you bring your down, and you can send for the soup and we’ll meet in the library?” she wanted to make sure they were both on the same page. “I just have one or two others left to do, so I shan’t be long.” eventually they came to a wide stone doorway with a sturdy wooden door in it, which gabriella stood back to allow dermod to open for her, before she swallowed, looking beyond it. “I… Didn’t realize the tunnels would come out in the crypts...” granted they weren’t in the O’Driscoll crypts. But to their left was the archway that opened up into them. And across from them another recess with a similar door. Now of course she was fascinated, and wondered where that one went. But that was an adventure for another night. Tonight they were going to have soup while curled up in the library, and then take themselves off to bed. And tomorrow they’d spend christmas as a family. A sob bubbled up in her throat at the thought, the overwhelming feeling catching her off guard. She had a family. Finally. The family she’d always wanted.

She took a shaky breath, before releasing his arm and heading for the stairs. “See you in a bit.” she smiled back at him. She was going to need a carriage to bring all her gifts down of course. But that didn’t matter as much to her. Everything was as it should be.

Dermod was glad he'd taken the time to enlarge the tunnel from the glorified crawlspace it had been when they'd rediscovered it a few weeks earlier. He hadn't bothered dealing with centuries of accumulated cobwebs, having assumed that only the old stablemaster would be using it, but he'd decided that having the man hit his head somewhere between the stables and the castle would be highly inconvenient and thus they could both walk upright. He had found nothing in the original castle plans to explain why the tunnel had originally been so small, but had concluded that perhaps it had only been meant for the house elves. Of course, a woman's touch made all the difference; as Gabriella cleared away the visibe cobwebs the writer straightened, no longer expecting them to wrap themselves in his hair.

"Nonsense - you look perfect" he responded, glancing sideways as if he could admire her in the semi-dark, enclosed space. Gabriella did look a lot healthier than she had a few short months earlier, now that she was eating properly again she'd even put on a few pounds. The new coat he'd bought for her fitted perfectly now "but I understand. No second helpings for you tomorrow...and I'll ask the elves not to serve you any of the fruit cake they've made..." he chuckled, and held her close as he spoke to minimise her inevitable reaction. Once they were further down the corridor, the mood changed and they confirmed what they were going to do once they were back in the castle, and then they walked in silence for a while. It was quite eerie hearing only the muffled sound of their footsteps, devoid of any echo in the tunnel and for a moment Dermod wondered what would happen if they ended up trapped here. Oh, it wouldn't truly be dangerous; he could blast through the tunnel roof into the open air if it became necessary, but the thought was disconcerting and he found himself almost relieved when the door to the castle came in sight.

"Ah. Of course - it makes sense that the tunnel would have been dug from here" he mused "Imagine if the castle lacked protection and came under siege...everyone would retreat belowground, slip into the tunnel, and then the last one to leave would set a series of delayed curses to explode the place around the invaders..." he chuckled again at the idea, thinking it could make a fascinating plot device and making a mental note to explore that one later. "Don't worry. It won't happen. I'll see you in the library" he said Gabriella headed upstairs, clearly pleased to be out of the tunnel, which he now closed, sealed with a simple charm and then, after he'd taken a couple of steps away, removed the charm. So much had changed in the past few months. Imagine having a squib living in the castle now. He wondered briefly if the man would take a walk off the estate tomorrow and find a portkey to visit his own family, or would be happy eating in the kitchens with the elves.

Not that it mattered. Feeling more content than he could remember, Dermod too headed toward the stairs.

[Dermod out]
