botanique

Botanique is the study of plants, including their structure, properties, and biochemical processes. It is one of the “sciences” of magical study. Included in the curriculum will be the identification of plant species (including differentiating between magical and mundane varieties), their uses and characteristics, and their influence in the fields of science, potions, medicine, cosmetics, and nutrition. We will also cover common plant diseases, and how plants interact with the environment.

bérénice bonaccord

Mademoiselle Bérénice Bonaccord is the current Head of Ombrelune. She is a Healer, formerly a Head of Ward at the Parisian L'Hôpital des Maladies Magiques Bonaccord, where she specialised in Potions and Plant Poisoning. She was Ombrelune Mousquetaire in her fifth, sixth, and seventh years at Beauxbatons.

TEACHING HISTORY: She joined Beauxbatons as a substitute professor in spring 2001. At the start of the new term in September 2002 she was made a permanent member of staff as the Botanique professor, and simultaneously promoted to Head of Ombrelune and Deputy Headmistress -- a move considered suspicious by many, but one she had no (direct) part in. The Bonaccords are prevalent in the French Ministry and they intended to use Bérénice as a way to control Beauxbatons from under Madame Maxime’s nose.

Over the summer of 2003 Bérénice resigned from her position as Deputy Headmistress -- partly to assert her place within her family, but also to show allegiance to her colleagues at the school. She remains Head of Ombrelune House, though now has Thursdays off-campus to work as a General Practitioner in the Chatoeil Clinic (much like her fellow Head of House, Madame Filomina Bellantoni). She lives in Chatoeil, rather than at the palace.

TEACHING STYLE: Bérénice accepts being addressed as Mademoiselle Bonaccord, Professeur Bonaccord, or (more rarely) Healer Bonaccord. She places more emphasis on effort and attendance than on academic ability, though she still regularly sets homework as she wants her students to be prepared for life after Beauxbatons. Her homework is not easy, but nor is it particularly strenuous.

CLASSROOM & OFFICE: Botanique is taught in a number of locations: either in a classroom next to the atrium greenhouse, or else in the outdoor greenhouses and gardens. Students are usually notified at the end of a lesson where the next one will take place, with any last-minute changes due to adverse weather being announced on the morning of lessons. Bérénice’s office is located beside the atrium classroom, with an up-to-date timetable of upcoming lessons and locations pinned to the door. Her office is clean and airy, with many potted plants dotted around.
