There had been no indication in either of their letters to and from their daughter that Gabriella might actually be here. This was more Gabriella’s thought, because she wasn’t sure if she’d be able to make it, and not because she wanted it to be a surprise. But the more the date approached, the more she found herself looking forward to seeing the look on Rhiannon’s face when she realized that Gabriella was actually there. For her. Just thinking about it made gabriella want to tear up and she was absolutely certain that the moment Rhiannon and her saw each other, she wouldn’t be able to help herself, and probably burst into tears.
Of course the plan of how to get to King’s Cross had been interesting to say the least. Apparition was out of the question for several reasons. The platform was too crowded, plus it was a greater distance… and he’d have to take gabriella, Rhiannon, and Rhiannon’s luggage separately. They’d brought Kit along to take care of the Luggage, but there was still the matter of getting three of them back. So they’d Apparated to an alley near the station, well out of the way of onlookers, with a different plan for how to get home set in motion. But one that involved Rhiannon getting the first of her christmas surprises a little early.
Gabriella hadn’t anticipated however, the crowds in the muggle portion of King’s Cross, panic welling up in her chest making her lightheaded and feeling sick. She clung tightly to Dermod and just whispered softly for him to get them through quickly, trying to take her mind anywhere else but where they were, focusing on placing her feet in front of each other. She wanted to go home, to flee, especially after her run in with that dreadful woman from the ministry. That encounter had almost undone all the progress that Gabriella had made over the past few months. But she was here, and it was too late to back out now. It was only when she could see the familiar pillar between platforms 9 and 10 that there was some relief for the fragile woman. But even that didn’t help, as they were quickly surrounded by throngs of other families waiting for their children. It could have been worse of course, if this were the beginning or end of term. Perhaps it was best that her first attempt was the middle of the year.
Mouth dry, gabriella scanned the children clambering off the train for her step-daughter, trying to focus on individual faces rather then the fact that they were in the middle of a crowd, her slender frame half hidden behind her husband’s, as tightly as she was clinging to him. “I don’t see her...†she said softly, starting to get worried. Had the girl decided to stay at school? No… she would have told them. She had to be here somewhere, perhaps further down. And then Gabriella caught sight of her, just for a second, between a family racing to hug their young son, ruffling his hair as his father picked him up. “There. She’s over there.†the family moved, and Rhiannon was visible again, Gabriella waiting for Dermod to take the lead, while staring at the slender dark haired girl, willing for her to look over to them. To see Gabriella.
