His parents were off on a business trip and had told him he could have a few friends over. His grandmother was watching him, but she was busy with the house elves, showing them the correct way to cook and clean, as she often did when she was over there. His grandmother was old fashioned, did a lot herself and did a lot by hand. He appreciated the dedication that must have taken, but of course he had never done
anything the hard way. He waited in his room, snacks ready and bottles of illegal wine stowed away, but chilled just right, in his closet. When the door to his room opened, he turned quickly, but he saw it was his own personal elf, Bai, introducing his first guest to arrive—Ben. Perfect. Let the party begin!
He dismissed the elf and went over to Ben to give him a hug. “Hey, glad you made it.†He grinned, looking behind him to see if Jet had made it in yet. Perhaps Jet was running late. Ben was fashionably late already, but Zane wasn’t worried about that. He had plenty of books and gadgets in his room to keep him entertained while he was waiting. Okay, that was true in theory, but not so much in action. He was easily bored of all things he owned—as if, as soon as he
owned it, he no longer wanted it.
The door closed behind them, and then they were alone. He was playing the wizarding wireless radio in the background, some pop-wrock song that Zane felt ambivalent to playing. He didn’t like a lot of popular music lately, preferred the cool tunes of old school rhythm and blues. Even so, the wireless radio DJ was funny and sounded pretty young. Every now and then there were serials playing, too.
“So whatcha wanna do?
Lao lao will be in bed in…†he checked his watch. “Thirty minutes? Tops? Better hope Jet gets here before she crashes or she’ll wake up. You think he found the place okay? Maybe I should have given better directions.â€
