Yes mum, I promise to be safe and to stay here, and I promise that I won’t even talk to
any strangers!†she said, squirming out of her mother’s grasp as the older woman fixed her daughter’s hair. Jeva was nearly thirteen years old, for goodness’ sake, she was practically an adult! And, as a practically adult, she most certainly didn’t need her mother fussing over her appearance as if she were a baby. Regardless, she put up with her mother’s needless fiddling of her scarf and hat, and the reminders to stay where there were lots of people and to not wander off, and blah blah blah. Just because she put up with it didn’t mean she was paying attention.
It had taken a lot of convincing to get her parents to allow her to come to Diagon Alley as part of her Christmas break, but she had wanted to spend a day with her best friend Patty, and had done a lot of begging. Eventually, her mother had agreed after a brief communication with Patty’s parents,
’And now’ she thought, as her mother finished her usual speech,
’I can finally have some fun!’“Okay, bye mum! Bye dad, and Jana and Jonas! See you in a bit!†she called over her shoulder as she left her muggle family behind and entered one of her favorite places: Diagon Alley. Her mouth dropped open as she saw how the street had been transformed. Dozens of stalls lined the streets, looking very enticing and selling who knows what. All Jeva knew was that it reminded her of the Christmas markets she had visited with her family when they’d visited Germany, and that she wanted to look at every single stall. But she didn’t want to spend all day at the market, she could hear what sounded like an actual real live band somewhere behind the market and she could see some sort of carnival looking rides in the distance, and it was all so enticing.
It didn’t take the twelve year old long to find her friend, who was waiting in the agreed spot, and she quickly ran up and gave the girl a big hug. “Hi Patty! I hope you’ve been having a good holiday!†She practically shouted, unable to contain her excitement any longer, “This is so cool! Let’s go check out the market, I wanna see if they have a sword or anything else cool!†She said, grabbing the other girl’s hand and running towards the nearest stall, “C’mon c’mon
c’mon!â€
