Are you ready for what's to come? [Molly]

J.J had assured Fenris that he was perfectly capable of doing his school shopping alone. It wasn't like it was difficult, after all. He had his list, he knew where most of the shops were and the others all had signs on them and if he couldn't find somewhere then he would just ask someone. Simple. Eventually Fenris had agreed to let J.J go by himself for a little bit and they arranged to meet a bit later in a cafe. J.J felt relieved to be out of the man's presence and by himself again. Fenris wasn't his father. His father was who should have been here with him, helping him buy his supplies. J.J wasn't sure exactly why Fenris had decided to take him in, but he was suspicious and untrusting now, of anyone. At least Fenris didn't have any bratty kids.

With a scowl the eleven year old headed down the alley, heading automatically to his favourite shop - The Apothecary. It was cooler inside than the the muggy street, and for a moment J.J idly meandered around the room, enjoying the cool air and atmosphere of the place. This had always been J.J's favourite shop to visit. Everything inside was just so fascinating. Huge bins overflowing with little beetles, shelves and shelves of jars with mysterious contents. J.J's dark green eyes explored the crowded shelves, trying to decipher some of the latin labels or guess what dark bottles held, before he finally dug out the parchment list of supplies that he needed to get. They all sounded rather dull compared to the stranger items the shop boasted, although still, J.J was excited at the prospect of starting Potions class. His parents had gotten him a 'my first potions kit' as a child and he'd had countless hours of fun methodically brewing the basic child-friendly concoctions. He could hardly wait for the real thing.

The bell above the shop door rang and J.J looked up to see a great amount of people pour in to the room. With a frown, he shifted his position so he could better analyse the newcomers. Were they one family? He could see at least six children and two adults. J.J stared quite openly at them, trying to pick out a family resemblance to confirm his suspicions, his list of ingredients still clutched in his hand, partly forgotten as he focused on this new distraction.

He was jealous. He couldn't help it, but seeing the younger ones ask the parents questions and they all seemed so happy... J.J had never had any brothers or sisters and he'd never really found it a problem until... well now it was just him. Alone. Fenris didn't count. It was only a matter of time before he, like the others, decided he didn't want him anymore and passed him to someone else. At least once he was at Hogwarts there wouldn't be so much moving around. J.J's eyes fixed on a young, blonde girl, who was saying something about Hogwarts and from the context and snippets of conversation he could hear, J.J deduced that the girl was a first year. Like him. Except not like him at all because she was here with an enormous, happy family and he was here alone, staring quite intensely at her as jealousy seethed beneath the surface.

The girl looked over at him and it didn't occur to J.J that he was staring until she'd already started heading his way. By then it would have been silly to try and drop his line of vision or pretend he'd been looking intently at something behind her, so he shifted his weight awkwardly from foot to foot, half preparing himself for her to be angry that he'd been staring at her. His cousins had sometimes taken offense to that. It was stupid, in J.J's opinion, what was the harm of looking at someone? But for some reason his cousins had decided it was a crime worthy of being beaten up... or at least publicly humiliated.

Unexpectedly, the girl didn't seem angry though, but rather curious. Curious, J.J could understand. She seemed nice too, smiling at him before asking him whether he was starting Hogwarts. He nodded, a small smile settling on his own lips in response. "Yes, I am." He didn't need to ask if she was - his suspicions had been confirmed by the wording of her question. "Is that all your family?" he asked, before he could stop the question from blurting out between his lips. Now embarrassed for asking what was probably a really stupid question with an obvious answer, he dropped his gaze to the list of ingredients still gripped in his hand. "I'm, erm, getting my supplies," he said, motioning to the page, and wondering why he was continuing to state the obvious. He really needed to change the subject. Subject, yes. "I think I'll enjoy potions. What subject are you looking forward to most?"

"Oh wow!" he replied, obviously in awe of the girl's enormous family. His family had always just been his parents and himself, and since he was six he'd seen less and less of his parents anyway... and now they were gone completely and it was just him. Well, him and Fenris at the moment, but that didn't count really, did it? "I suppose that the idea is much the same in practice - combining the correct type and amount of ingredients with the right method of concoction... although I believe potions is more exact... if you make a mistake in cooking, often it's still salvageable, but in potions everything has to be precise." To be honest, that was one of the reasons why J.J loved it so much. Accuracy was important. He liked things to be precise. "I had a young potions kit and that was very interes- er.. fun." Looking over at the jars behind him, his lips curled into a half-smile. "Well, most potions are still consumed..." he responded, thoughtfully, although it did raise a good point - did he really want to have to drink a potion made of all of these strange ingredients? Hmm he'd have to cross that bridge when he got to it.

A pang of pain struck J.J in the gut as Molly mentioned family, but J.J smothered it, waving a hand vaguely. "My guardian is at a cafe just along the alley," he responded. "I told him I'd rather get my supplies alone... I mean... without him... " it wasn't that he wanted to shop alone, because he was actually enjoying talking to this future classmate of his. He just didn't want Fenris around. People might assume that he was his father or brother or something. And he wasn't. And J.J didn't want Fenris to be his father or act like he was his father either. He already had a father. "He's quite annoying," J.J added, although he felt a little guilty as he said it, because he knew that Fenris didn't intend to be.

"My name's Jasper, but people call me J.J," he replied, offering her his hand to shake politely. "I don't have any brothers or sisters. Do you like having a lot of them?"

"I expect we probably will have to drink them at some point... otherwise how will we know they work?" He pulled a face though, implying that he didn't fancy drinking some of the ingredients on their list. Maybe it would taste better when all mixed together in a potion though. Thinking about it just made him more anxious to get started. He wanted his first potions lesson so badly.

He smiled happily as Molly complimented his name. She was nice. He hoped that everyone at Hogwarts was this friendly. He didn't want to think about how many of the students there would be more like his cousin who seemed to take great delight in trying to upset J.J. at every possible opportunity. If there were more like Molly then hopefully it would be easy for him to make friends. He just wanted to fit in and be liked.

He was disappointed as the girl's family rounded the corner and she was already heading off. He nodded, wishing he could ask to go along with her to do the rest of his shopping, but he didn't have the nerve. Besides, she probably didn't want him to. Her family wouldn't want him to either. If there was one thing J.J. had learned over the last year, it was that families were exclusive and insular. They didn't accept outsiders. Like him. "I'll see you at Hogwarts," he replied, waving back at her as she headed off and soon he was left alone in the apothecary once more.

With a sigh, he looked down at his list, heading over to the shelves to pick out the ingredients he needed to buy and wondering what exactly Molly had meant by a 'good house'.
