[solved] A question about elementals
« on: September 06, 2013, 04:01:44 PM »
Hello everyone! I had a quick question about elementals.

How much would regular wizarding society know about them? I tend to imagine the elementals to be something of a myth to most wizards. Like... something people whisper about, but something wizards tend to be kind of skeptical of. Maybe there is some elemental lore or some elemental "writings" that might have been discovered, but that seems like something the council would want to keep under wraps if they don't want to hunt or be hunted for their special abilities, and also since most elementals tend to hide their abilities from others, and only share the secrets with close friends/reliable sources.

Also, a lot of it is encoded and elementals really only teach their own kinds how to crack the code, so I imagine that wizard researchers would really have to study to understand it... council eles wouldn't tell because of their loyalty to the council, and rogues wouldn't want to tell because they would lose their advantage if they gave away their secrets.

Is that accurate at all? Or would they be kinda like parselmouths where people totally know about them but they're kinda rare? I don't know why I thought the whole elementalism thing was a big secret.

i'm not 100% sure but i think it is a rather big secret. lots of people at beauxbatons know about them because of the rogue attack that happened a few years ago. the council elementals all fought against the rogues and got exposed during the battle. other than that i'd say you're mostly right with your assumptions. i'd also day that they're a myth to most people and that only close family members and friends know about it. if they even know it at all. zoé, for example, didn't tell anyone that she was an elemental before the attack. only after it she finally told her family.

I think you've pretty much got it right. Elementals tend to be quite secretive about what they are, not least because "I don't sleep, I turn into a tree" isn't the kind of thing you say on a first date if you want the relationship to work out, and - well, I imagine there's something of a stigma attached to being a wizard who can't actually use a wand.

The exception is Beauxbatons, where because of the Rogue attack a couple of years back the existence of eles is common knowledge. Just...regular wizards probably don't know much about them, as you say. I guess that after the attack regular wizards know they exist but kind of assume that they don't know any.

I have no idea if that makes sense or if I'm happily rambling on without any clear end, so I'll shut up now. :)

So you think that most people would like, not really know it existed?

I feel like a lot of people would be like "Lol, that's ridiculous" if someone tried to convince them that they did.
Sort of like UFO sightings or bigfoot or something,  people claim to have seen them, but most people don't really believe that they have?

and of course the families/close friends aren't gonna like tell everything about what their family members/friends disclose to them in secret...

i think the ufo comparison thing works rather well. maybe rumours and fairytales exist about them but most people think they're exactly that. just simple rumours and fairytales that are not true.

Personally, I don't think totally like UFOs, a bit more like hermaphrodite cats or four-legged chickens or something. As in, they definitely do exist, and it can be scientifically proven, but nobody really knows why or how common they are, and everyone's got a friend of a friend who's seen one, but...

I was thinking that it would be interesting to have some sort of character fascinated by lore and unique magics trying to fine some legitimate proof of elemental existence and activities. Someone trying to kind of prove that they are not just a fable found in ancient coded writings, but also some real thing that could potentially help or hurt wizarding kind, and doing research to try and further this idea. Picking apart elementals, really, to try to find the true essence of their magic, and see how it differs from "regular" magic.

This would really only be relevant if people didn't really know or believe that elementals were a thing, though, because there is no point in trying to prove the existence of something everyone believes in, though I suppose research could still be done on the subject, and persuasive articles could be written for either side of the debate.

Maybe even trying to create a way for these innate abilities to become learned, or attempt to transform a regular person into an elemental through advanced alchemy and extensive research. Of course this may be impossible, or really, really, realllyy difficult, but that wouldn't necessarily stop a mad scientist from trying.

This has pretty much been answered, but I'd say that your assumptions are things that I would agree on, with the obvious exception of BB, since the attack and all (I mean, Zoé gave Prosper an everlasting ice sculpture for his birthday haha xD). I also think your char idea is very cool.
