[Solved] Magical creatures/magic in general
« on: November 07, 2013, 10:45:20 AM »
So I was reading Rinn's application for a new class at Durmstrang (which is brilliant and makes me want to make a durmie), and I started reading about random stuff on wikipedia as well as harry potter wikia. It got me thinking in J.K. Rowling's version of the magical world, where do we draw the line at what exists and what doesn't exist? In every culture there are bound to be their own myths and legends about demons and monsters, an example is with Japan's Kappa, which was included in the DADA syllabus, but does it mean that everything that used to be a lore or a speculation automatically materialises in the harry potter universe?

I'm sorry if this is phrased inappropriately as a question? I'm just curious as to what everyone thinks.

Even if there aren't specific rules and such, J.K. Rowling has definitely given the world a certain atmosphere that I think allows for certain things and not others. Just off the top of my head, I don't think that voodoo fits well into the HP Universe and what we know about how magic works within it. I think it just has to do with context of which the magic is used, at least to me. I think the limitations as to what a type of magic can do can go a long way too, but I think that a lot of mythology/lore could potentially have a place within the HP world, especially in an RPG setting if done correctly.

This probably sounds a bit vague, but generally we tend to draw the line at anything that has an extablished fiction or fan fictionof its  own. For example - vampires *exist* in the Harry Potter universe, but they're not made a big thing of because they've been done so many times before. Demons, which tend to have religious connotations (along with angels) for a lot of people are rarely mentioned, and when they are, they are creatures that exist and have a finite lifespan rather than something supernatural; I would imagine for those very reasons.

The majority of creatures that are a part of british folklore (selkies, Black Shuck, the Loch Ness monster, kelpies etc) and a lot of worldwide myths and cryptozoological creatures, are given a magical reason for their existence by JK, so I would imagine something similar could be true for anything that she hadn't specifically mentioned.

I'm not sure if that helps or even makes any sense xD What were you specifically thinking of?

I can’t remember all the bits and bobs I was thinking of because stupid me, I forgot to write them down. But off the top of my head I’d say thank you! That helped to put things in perspective a little.

I guess it’s because I’m going to create a Chinese character and a Japanese one in the future and I’m writing her efb and I really want to incorporate something unique cultural wise into their histories. So I guess more of mythological creatures like the Qilin and Asian versions of dragons and stuff. Also I was reading the Hyakumonogatari Kandai, which is just a collection of Japanese creatures and ghosts and such and wondered if they would actually exist somewhere in Japan, since there is a magical school in Japan and all.

I just have so many more weird ideas and I don’t want it to seem like I’m godmodding stuff. I could explain them here but it’s long and at this point in time really unfocused and messy. Since a lot of it is about magic originating from Asia and bringing it to MH settings I was just wondering how it would work on the site, and if it would work/be approved at all.
Sorry if this sounds rambly, I get excited and my thoughts get all jumbled up.

I too would be interested in that answer. I have been looking into Egyptian magic and lore for when I write Janessa's character sheet. Not anything I would really see as SF worthy, just magic that I imagine she would have been taught in school in Egypt.

Asian dragons I would say are definitely okay - we created the Namibian Nightwing as an MH-species of dragon so if you were to do the same with, say, a japanese one (as we already have the CHinese fireball) that should be fine.

Other mythology - I'd steer clear from ghosts, myself, unless we're talking *a* specific ghost rather than an actual genre of them, if thatmakes sense. So it would be fine to have, for example, one really malicious ghost that enjoyed terrifying small children (I'm picking ideas out of the air here so they aren't good ones) that would work, but not to have a "species" of ghost that were found in one region. Unless there was a whole family who all became ghosts when they died due to a curse or something (now I like that idea... wanders off to think!) ...

I'm digressing. I think the best thing is if you sandbox stuff as it goes along and anything that seems weird or borderline, ask someone to check it out.

As for magic - when I was writing Sam's sheet, I invented some weird little branches of divination and the like that he encountered during his time in Southern Africa, so as long as it fits with the country, I think creating "new" magics would work most of the time :)

Hope this makes sense. I've typed it with a kitten snuggled on my lap and arms and my hands are fairly restricted!

I rather like the ghost idea too! But then again, I just like ghosts in general.

I'm planning to put stuff inside my sandbox maybe tomorrow, because I have a few potential career tracks I want the family to have. Or maybe all of them for the heck of it, who knows?

Thank you for your replies! I currently have nothing intelligent to add since it's 3 am and I need sleep
but aww kitty <333~

Sorry to hijack, I just think we should all make a character from this accursed ghost family now!
