Botched healing?
« on: November 27, 2013, 10:24:34 AM »
Hello,

I was wondering if it is possible or plausible that a magical treatment of an injury, either accidentally or on purpose, could be botched so as to not fully fix the problem, and if that botched healing job would then be semi-permanent unless drastic measures are taken (for example, setting a bone wrong and all the complications that go with that), or is it something that can just be magicked away with the flick of a wand?

I think it's plausible, depending on the injury. I feel like it could definitely happen with some kind of unqualified healer for wound sustained super illegally or something like that... Did you have something specific in mind? :)

  • I was brought up a proper lady. I wasn't meant to understand things. I'm just meant to look pretty, and then someone nice will marry me.

I have a character with a scar from a wound incorrectly healed by a person under the influence of alcohol! I explained the situation and why there wasn't any further help from someone else in her history and it was ok.

I too have a character who has had healing not so much botched as just failed. I justify mine through recourse to canon - I don't remember where exactly, but it's suggested that some [dark] magical injuries are so powerful that healing can't help.  I think Arthur's bite from nagini is one (they have to resort to muggle medicine, if i recall correctly).  Also the killing curse is a good, if extreme example - magical medicine can't do anything there.  And for botched healing, just look at gilderoy lockheart!

Carys' Fabien also has a permanent injury that wasn't fixed initially with magic, and healed improperly.
I'm pretty sure that's what it is.

I also had a character back in the day that was missing a finger from the battle of Hogwarts that only partially grew back due to a healer being in a hurry and improperly administering the medicine. ^^

Yup - badly broken leg that was fixed at a muggle hospital; which he was a couple of hours away from so it wasn't dealt with immediately. Much of Fabien's hostility toward the world is the knowledge that if he *had* been taken to a skilled healer immediately, he would have been almost totally fine.

Dermod's injuries following the battle of Hogwarts wouldn't have been so bad if they'd dared take him to a proper healer, too.

I love charrie torture xD

Celia's beloved mother (who I'm not tempted to turn into a PC because she's just that much fun to play with) would do just about anything to cure her daughter of her silly notions of becoming a famous pianist and choosing a stable, reputable career (like hers). Even, oh I don't know, maliciously failing to heal a fractured wrist properly to make it impossible to play piano as well as before, thus encouraging her to give it up.

You know, just a lark >.>

But thanks for everyone's input and contribution. It seems like something that could be plausible and workable. :D
