[montrose] if the heavens ever did speak [open]

It had been a long day for Circenn. One that was still not over, but he felt the exhaustion down to his bones. He ran one hand over his face and into his dark, wavy hair that hung to his shoulders as the cool night air greeted him. He pushed open the door that allowed his freedom from the player's locker room at the arena, overcome with a sense of deja vu. His team had more wins than losses, but a loss like the one they had faced tonight always felt the same way as he left the quidditch pitch. A sense of unfulfillment. An ache for wanting to do it over and do it better. But Circenn had long ago learned that backwards wishing didn't achieve much.

The quidditch player had his broom slung over his shoulder, his attire just as polished and prim as it had been when he had entered, but his body had taken a beating. He had been struck by an errant bludger halfway through the game and though the team healer had lessed the pain, his shoulder ached with the memory. Circenn had lingered much longer than he usually did, reflecting on the game he had played for far longer than was normal for him. It was good because the fans, refs, coaches, and teammates had all cleared out already, leaving him to his thoughts. But it was also bad because it was easier for him to give in to his critical nature when there was no one to break him out of it.

Eventually he realized his hair was completely dry from his post-game shower and that even the cleaning crews were clearing out of the arena. It was probably time for him to go home. Poco was probably looking forward to him coming home, most likely for the promise of food. The thought almost made Circenn smile. The sky was dark with the dusk, though stars seemed to shine brighter tonight, as he made his way to the designated spot for kick off, clear of the arena's security charms. Circenn often opted to fly back to his apartment rather than apparate simply because he loved flying. The flight gave him the time to sort his thoughts and he had become quite handy with a disillusionment charm.

Just as Circenn had swung his leg over his broom, his muscle memory taking over more than conscious thought, he saw movement in the shadows near the towering parapets of the pitch. He stilled for a second, curious, before realizing it was a young woman who apparently was having troubles with her broom. The night air was calling to him and he yearned for an oblivious state that would get him home sooner, yet he found himself walking towards her instead. He smiled as he heard her mutter expletives as she fiddles with the broom. Ah. A Cleansweep One. Circenn was familiar with how as that particular model aged, it became less reliable for start up flight.

He cleared his throat as he drew nearer as to not startle her and then smiled politely, pushing his weariness away. "Anything I can help with?"

Watching a Holyhead Harpies game live from the stands was always a highlight for the young healer-in-training. Aline Stanton had been a Harpies fan since childhood, despite the fact that her whole family rooted for Puddlemere United. It had always fascinated her that an all female team could be that good and it had proven to her that she good be as good as all her brothers. At school, the Gryffindor had played many games as beater for her house team and while she'd never aspired to become a professional Quidditch player, she had enjoyed every single one of it.

Today's match had been extremely close but eventually the Harpies hat won against the Magpies and Aline had cheered until her throat had been hoarse. Like always, the group of friends chatted about the game afterwards and after some time they belonged to the last few people in the arena. It was obvious that the cleaning crews wanted them to get out and so they agreed reluctantly and left. Her friends said goodbye, one after one and soon she was the only one still standing there.

Flying to the games with her old Cleansweep One had become some kind of habit for the brunette, especially since the Harpies always seemed to win whenever she did that. The two or three times she had apparated, the Holyhead Harpies had faced terrible losses and while she usually wasn't superstitious, Aline had decided to fly to the games whenever possible. Going home by broom was a lot slower than apparating but the former Gryffindor enjoyed the solitude of being in the air and so she was actually looking forward to flying home.

There was just one problem. The broom wouldn't move.

"Bloody hell!" Her voice cut through the night as she tried to kick off for what seemed to be the fiftieth time in ten minutes. Still nothing. "I should have bought a new one long ago," she mumbled, getting more and more annoyed. The Cleansweep was still the one she'd used at school and somehow she hadn't been able to part from it. That would definitely change now. "I'm going to use you for the fireplace, what do you think of that, hmm?" Someone cleared his throat behind her and Aline spun around, ready to face whoever was standing there. Holy crap, the guy was huge. The healer-in-training raised her head challengingly. "Oh, I don't know. I doubt anyone could get this bloody thing to work again."

Her muttered comment about throwing the broom into the fireplace made a smile tug at the corners of his lips, dimples on both sides of his cheeks peeking through. And while she was almost a foot shorter than he was, he almost groaned when he realized she was a Harpies fan, judging from the jersey she wore. Circenn knew Holyhead fans were some of the most passionate in the league, to put it nicely, and while he didn't mind offering his help (even to a fan of another team), he certainly didn't want to hear a tirade on how great the team was that he played tonight. Maybe she wouldn't recognize him at all, he thought hopefully. Out of habit, he almost lowered his head to avoid her gaze in an effort to make it harder for her to recognize him.

The glint of challenge in her eyes made him tilt his head slightly in response. "Let's see if I can help," he said with a quiet smile. He wouldn't want to tell her outright that he was almost positive he could fix it, but he considered his knowledge of broom mechanics were a little higher than the average wizard.

He took a few steps closer and squatted to get closer to the broom, running his hands through the bristles with expert fingers. "How long have you had this?" he asked her as he tinkered. Circenn hadn't had a Cleansweep since his school years, but the one he used to use had the same issues more often than he liked. Still, it took his some time to remember exactly what tricks had worked for him all those years ago.

With one last adjustment, he placed his hands on his knees and straightened to his full height and then nodded to her. "Try it now." He was smiling slightly. Sure, they hadn't won the game tonight, but at least he could prove her wrong and fix a Cleansweep for start up flight. He reminded himself he shouldn't feel so proud over this.. but he couldn't help it. His smile grew wider as he waited for her to try it out.

Thank Merlin she wasn't easily scared. It was dark, she was alone and there was one of the tallest guys she'd ever seen standing right in front of her. Was she a magnet for tall guys or something? Zephir, Theoren and now this guy. At least he didn't look scary and seemed quite nice. Aline wouldn't mind hexing anyone who harassed her but he didn't seem like someone she had to fend off with magic. Plus he thought he could help her and if he actually could, nothing else mattered. Right now, she just wanted to get home. Stupid broom.

The former Gryffindor took a step to the side, allowing him to take a closer look at that useless thing. Now that she could see him a little better, Aline realised that he looked familiar but she couldn't really say where she might know him from. School maybe? He was probably a few years older so that might be. After all, he looked foreign enough to be recognisable.

"Uhm, I'm not quite sure. Seven years? Eight maybe?" The girl shrugged her shoulders slightly. "I know that I should have bought a new one by now. I guess I'm just sentimental." The man looked as if he knew what he was doing and that made her quite hopeful. Maybe it would actually bring her home tonight. He smiled at her, clearly happy that he'd been able to help, and she smiled back at the wizard, even though she was still a little skeptical.

Aline looked up again and nodded, taking her broom back from him. The witch quickly put her leg over the handle, grabbed it with both of her hands, tried to kick off and... nothing. Without looking at the guy she tried it again but still... nothing happened. Great. Just great. "I was right. It's a useless pile of crap." She felt a little bad for the man, who had clearly expected the broom to work again, but right now annoyance beat the feeling of compassion. "Do you want to try again or should I just spare you the effort and throw it in a trash can?"
