Promises and pie crust are made to be broken [Eli]
« on: March 06, 2015, 10:24:44 AM »
Valentine’s Day was horrible. There! She said it! There were so many people kissing, hugging and giving each other chocolates everywhere. Since Gianna wasn’t getting any of the kisses, hugs, or chocolates, she was at perfect liberty to deem this day absolutely nauseating. And what’s the worse thing about Valentine’s Day? It sticks. Everything leading up to the day was pink and red and hopelessly tacky, the people even more so, and it lasted way longer than it needed to. It’s almost March, but just this morning she spent most of her time scrubbing off beer stains and glitter off the vinyl booths. She didn’t even know they served glittery drinks! Not fun.

Couples were also not fun. It’s way past the time for them to be doing stuff like wear matching red and pink jumpers with hearts and pugs on them, but apparently the couple she just passed didn’t think so. How she wished she could bill them for causing her deep-seated psychological trauma for years to come! Now she wouldn’t even be able to look at jumpers without that image coming to mind. Ugh. It had frilly cuffs too! Gianna shuddered at that bit of detail her brain wouldn’t forget. Horrible. But of course, the universe hated her. She just wanted to go home and spend sometime by herself without being bombarded by couples swapping saliva on the streets, but was that possible? Nooooooooo. Like she said, nauseating!

And she wanted to kick herself for feeling just a twinge of envy.

So Gianna took it out the only way she knew how. Pie. Sweet, delicious homemade pie that her boss was kind enough to let her bring back some, even though it was three in the afternoon and nowhere near late enough for it to be considered leftover. Eight slices that were still hot and ready to be eaten, and the girl wanted to squeal at the thought. Carbs? Calories? She’d worry about that later. Besides, she thought, pinching at her slender waist, I could use a little more meat on my bones. Too bad there was no one to share it with her, good food was always better when shared. Slightly dejected now, she took her time strolling through the streets she knew so well, swing her container of pie as she walked.

It was rather deserted, especially for Diagon Alley, even at the rather odd hour. Was everyone so preoccupied with work that no one even had time for tea anymore? Tsk. It was not quite warm enough to sit outside yet, but some shops still had tables and chairs laid out at the front. And there, Gia spotted a lone figure who seemed to be… Just sitting there? She would have walked right past him if there wasn’t something familiar about that hair and… Of course! Who else could it be? “Elijah Dasher!” She called out, “Fancy seeing you here.” Gianna waved enthusiastically and gave him a bright grin, almost skipping over to where he was sitting. Finally!

If it wasn’t obvious enough, Gianna was delighted to see him. He was never with her inner circle of friends, but they were always polite to each other and got along fine when the situation called for it. So she saw no problem with grabbing the seat opposite him before he could say no. He was probably going to say no; Gia remembered that about him, always preferring his own company, how strange! “Why the glum look, chum? I’ve got something that’ll fix you right up!” She dangled the container of food as close to him as possible without actually smacking him in the face. As soon as he realised how good it smelt he couldn’t possibly say no. “It’s your lucky day today, pie’s on me!” The pie was free of course, but Elijah didn’t need to know that...

Eli wasn’t in the best of moods, but he wasn’t in the bad mood, either. Mostly he was just somewhere in-between. Valentines day didn’t particularly both him, but it was admittedly slightly depressing watching everyone else wandering around so obliviously happy. Elijah wasn’t one for relationships of any kind, really. The few friends he had were enough to keep track of, and there was no way he could handle a romantic relationship. Mostly on the account of he wouldn’t really know what to do, and that he’d never really thought about having a girlfriend, or boyfriend, Eli really wasn’t sure he had a preference if he was interested in romance at all.

Particularly after the incident with Eloise and Dorian, Eli made sure to make himself scarce on a day like Valentines day. He still felt horrendously awkward about the whole thing even though everyone had agreed to let bygones be bygones. So he’d decided to just wander till he’d gotten tired of it. And that had taken quite some time, but he’d been tempted to stop along the nearly empty streets of Diagon Alley because it was always entertaining to draw random passerby just for something to do. But just before he could reach into his coat pocket and grab his supplies, a familiar voice broke through his thoughts.

Gianna Regan? What was she doing here? Not wanting to be rude, he offered a fairly genuine smile and a small wave. He didn’t dislike Gianna, it was just more that the woman’s enthusiasm always managed to niggle him just the wrong way, and grated on his nerves. Not to mention seeing her on a day like today brought back rather embarrassing memories of the only date he’d ever been on. And he’d made sure it was a total disaster. Disinterest or not, nobody liked being embarrassed, and Eli was no exception.

“You as well, Gianna...” He trailed off as a plastic container was nearly shoved in his face. Pie. Hmm. He liked pie. Snatching it out of the air before Gianna could take back her offer, Eli popped the top open, and transfigured a nearby twig into a fork. It would do.  As he ate the first bites, the wizard nodded appreciatively before answering his friends question “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you, but my roommates girlfriend accidentally kissed me. And now everything is awkward.” After another pause he added “Thank you for the pie, by the way.”

A hefty grin on her lips, Gianna followed Eli’s example as well and dug into the pie. Her fork wasn’t as shiny and it missed a tine, but it was better than nothing. Transfiguration was never her best subject anyway, and she missed a lot of practice time in between jobs. It wasn’t like she could just transfigure away the dirty plates, or the attitude some of the customers gave her. For doing her job too! People were crazy sometimes. “You think this is good. Next time I’ll bring you the world famous caramel apple ginger pie. And the meat pies!” Gia echoed her friend’s nod and ended her sentence with a satisfied moan.

If she wasn’t a Regan, the young witch was one hundred percent sure that she would have spat out that bite of sweet pastry still in her mouth. But she was in fact a Regan, and she was no stranger to admittedly bizarre relationship problems, especially during family gatherings. Instead, her eyes grew rounder in surprise and she continued chewing before she swallowed the mouthful with an audible gulp. “You’re welcome. The offer still stands by the way, if you ever want to try.” She answered politely, tackling the easy response first. Fork still in hand, Gia rested her sharp chin on the back of her hands, dropping crust crumbs everywhere around her.

“That must be really awkward.” The twenty-one year old hummed thoughtfully, her fork hanging limp from her fingers. Let’s see, what advice could she possibly pull out from her years of reading relationship advice columns? Although Eli probably wouldn’t classify this as a  relationship problem, since he wasn’t really the one in the relationship. Hmmmm… tricky! “Just move out? Then you won’t have to see either of them again. Problem solved!” Gia let out a soft laugh to let her friend know that she was, in fact, joking. She didn’t really want to be the cause of a potential homeless situation. “This is also probably a stupid question, but how did it happen? Do you look a lot like her boyfriend?” She was probably being too nosy for her own good, but now she was actually curious. Eli didn’t look like he had anything better to do anyway, and this was much better than going home and waiting for time to pass until something exciting happened.
