Kerr sat in the back in the bar, cigarette dangling from slender fingers, and glasses sliding down his nose. Using the side of the hand, he pushed his glasses back up and continued staring down at the book on the table. Why was he in a bar waiting? Gia was here. Well, she was supposed to be. He’d been waiting forever for his big sister, and apparently she was running late for her shift. So much for surprising her.

One of her friends on the staff had suggested that he didn’t try anything, so the only thing in front of him was a murky water glass that he hadn’t touched. He could feel his lip turning up in disgust at the dive bar. Why did Gigi work here? There were so many other places that she could work and not in this disgusting place. He could feel the need for a shower arising, and shook it off. If only she could get there so he could make her skiv off today and go get food. Some where clean.

Pushing the glass further away from him, nose crinkled in disgust, he was stunned when a person slid in the booth infront of him. His wand flicked awkward and pointed directly at his sister, and he sighed. “Gigi, don’t f**cking scare me like that.” His deep voice rumbled from within his chest as he slid his wand back into its holster. Penetratingly pale eyes stared down at his older sister, and he cleared his throat expectantly. “Well? Can we go now?”

He shoved his book in his bag and reached over to grab Gia’s wrist. “I want food…” He dragged her out of the booth, and out of the door, not looking back. “You want Italian? I want Italian…” The persistent boy didn’t give her a chance to respond as he dragged her into the nice Italian restaurant. When they got to the booth, he stared at her.

“I missed you. I hate your job.”

Effin’ Betty. Gianna should’ve known better than to switch shifts with her. She just wanted a day off, where she could do something with herself. Like maybe paint her nails to last for longer than a day, or just catch up on some sleep. But no, she flaked out on her last minute and she had to come in for work today after all. Well, lesson learnt now. And if she spent the whole time on her way to work scheming how to get back at Betty (she settled on switching out one of her pregnancy tests in the end), who could really blame her?

Entering through the employees’ backdoor as usual, she was just about to change into her uniform when she spotted a familiar mop of dark hair. What was her younger brother doing here? Not that she wasn’t happy to see him, but Crazy Larry’s was hardly the place for someone still in school, of age or not. A mischievous grin now on her face, Gianna decided that it was time she got to scare him as well. It was only fair, after all. So as quietly as she could, she sneaked over to where Kerr was brooding at a glass of water, and popped in with a soft, barely audible ‘boo’.

Success! Gia could barely keep herself from cackling as Kerr reacted so violently. “What’s gotten you so jumpy? Losing your touch?” She teased good naturedly, “Hey, wait a minute, where are you dragging me off to? We have food right here; I have to work! Kerr!” But Gia was all but helpless as her younger brother dragged her out of the bar. She managed a feeble wave at her gaping boss as they left. Well, there goes that free pie for the day. Damn, when had Kerr gotten so strong? And did he grow taller again? It’s been that long since she last saw him, huh? She felt a sudden pang of guilt and allowed him, this time, to pull her into a cosy looking Italian restaurant.

Gianna mock glared at him as they sat down, but the lingering smile on the corner of her lips betrayed how pleased she actually was. No wait, bad Gianna, you’re not setting a good example by ditching work! “I missed you too. How’s school? How’re mum and dad and the rest of the brood? Is that a new tattoo? Do you have a girlfriend now? If so why haven’t I met her yet?” Her rapid-fire questions left her with no chance to breathe, and she had to pause to take a big gulp of air before she started again. This time, the frown on her face was more real, and she tried to look more intimidating. “This is a nice surprise and all, but I hope you have a good explanation for showing up and making me lose a day’s pay.” Ha, how’s that for the responsible big sister role?
