Acceptance Letter Questions
« on: August 14, 2015, 04:20:07 PM »
Okay, so I'm doing a Brynn update, and while reading through her sheet I found something that confused me a bit. Brynn's mother is a muggleborn, so obviously she would have had someone from the school come and explain everything to her which, under normal circumstances, would mean that Brynn's letter would come by owl post. However, Mrs. Caines was literally at Hogwarts for less than a day. My question is, would Brynn receive her letter by owl mail, or have someone come and explain things to her? Originally I figured it would be by owl, but the more I think about it, the more I wonder.

Thanks so much to whoever answers this!

Here's my two cents!

So reading over her backstory right quick, I think what would unfold would be rather similar to how Harry got his letter, actually. Like the Dursleys, Brynn's mother knew about the magical world, but chose to ignore it. The ministry wouldn't bother to send a representative, I don't imagine, as they would probably have their hands full with genuine muggleborns. Though Brynn grew up as a muggle, since she is a true halfblood, I believe they'd have just sent her letter normally by owl.

How her family reacts to the letter, however, is very much up to you! It could be quite amusing xD

Good question!

Hi taylor!

I don't know which admin sorted your sheet so maybe they can explain better, but as a reader I don't really get why her mom would leave Hogwarts, especially after one day. I imagine that all muggle born students are fearful of the magic in some aspects because they never really knew it existed before and I'm sure, at age 11, it all comes as a bit of a shock.

That said, I personally find it unlikely that Brynn's mom would just be allowed to leave Hogwarts after complaining to the headmaster/mistress. I believe it is mentioned in the books that part of even going to Hogwarts is learning how to control their magic, otherwise I imagine it builds up in them and explodes randomly---Harry breaking the glass of the snake enclosure, Aunt Marge blowing up, for examples. This means Brynn's mom would be having random explosions of magic because she's never learned to control it. I don't think she could just pack up her wizarding stuff and forget about it, like you have mentioned in Brynn's sheet.

If I were you, I would either find a way to more plausibly explain Brynn's mom leaving Hogwarts and how she dealt with her magical abilities through out her life, or just scrap the idea completely. Personally, I would just change her leaving Hogwarts, because that seems a little too unlikely and it'll be less to explain. You can still have Brynn's dad as a Muggle however--maybe they were childhood friends in the same neighborhood, or met through some of the mom's muggle friends.

Let me know if this helps or if you need someone to bounce ideas around with!

Perfect! That's kinda what I was thinking, but I just wanted to make sure. Thank you so much!

I don't actually remember (Heather maybe ???) But yes, that was actually one of the things I was going to change as well because after rereading it, it didn't make sense to me either. I'll probably end up having it so she never even went to Diagon Alley, or waiting it out until the winter break at which point she left for home and never went back.

Thank you both, you are so amazing!

I would still double check with an admin before doing that. Like I said earlier, it's not like she can just shut the magic off. She would be likely to have random magical outburst that she wouldn't be able to control, and wouldn't the ministry send her letters about performing magic in front of muggles? Regardless of her going to Hogwarts or not, that would still be illegal. And then she'd have to explain why, at 11, she chose not to go back. Just because she was afraid doesn't quite make sense to me.

Is there an admin that wants to fact check me on this?

Also, personally, I don't think this section of her history is adding anything to Brynn. It just seems like something complicated for the sake of complication. If you want her unaware of magic, why not just make her muggleborn? Or even as her mother knowing magic, but choosing to keep it quiet because they live in a muggle neighborhood?

Hello again,

Aisling, I do appreciate where you're coming from, but Taylor posted this question looking for clarification on Brynn's acceptance letter. While you bring up interesting points for her to consider, they're not relevant to her immediate request.

Brynn has already been sorted, and thus this back story has already been approved in some capacity. When she is resubmitted for sorting, if there are any issues at hand they will be noted accordingly. Similarly, if Taylor is looking for that sort of feedback or clarification, she is welcome to ask. Until that time, let's try to stay on topic.
