Sighing; the man shifted the pillows around on the couch as he searched. Where was his sweater? Now that was the strangest thing. He'd laid it out with he rest of his clothes and for some reason it was the only thing that had gone missing. Green eyes scanned the room as his brows came together. He had a work meeting and he hated to be late. He wasn't sure what would discussed, maybe things for the upcoming year. Maybe they would be talking about lesson plans or something of the such. The Irishman didn't care as long as he found his sweater.

Walking from the living room he jogged back up the stairs to swiftly enter his room to have just another look. No luck. He'd turned the entire house upside down and still it hadn't turned up. Hmmm, maybe not the entire house. He moved briskly, only faintly aware of the time ticking down, towards the room for his cats. The door was opened and there on one of the scratching posts,  along with his serval Khalilah resting comfortably, was his sweater. His gaze soften and the door was closed back behind him before he walked back to his room to grab the extra sweater off his bed.

It would seem he had been missed while away and someone didn't agree with the meeting he had to attend. Sweater on he fixed the sleeves just enough the cover the scar where his mark had been. Out of habit he rubbed there before he was pushed and pulled as he apparrated. As the ground became solid once more Dom took a moment to fix his clothing. The sun shone down clearly as there seemed to be a lack of clouds in the sky. The air was light but cool. It was a rather nice day. If the meeting didn't go on too long he would surely enjoy the day somehow.

The former Slytherin had made choices in his life that had at one point or another put a strain on his family. They cleared the air but for some reason he still felt the strain. His body shifted so he didn't bump into a woman as he moved down the street. It seemed like his choices were haunting him and the man was now afraid of loosing all he had. This life he had made for himself after the war was one he wished he'd had years ago. Maybe just maybe he had went the path he had because he thought it was best. Yes partly it was get closer to his father but still it could have been for the best.

The light sound of the bell rang out to announce his entrance. Green eye scanned around the room, there were people scattered all about. His eyes caught site of an empty place near the back and headed there. A quick glance at his watch told him he was early. Faintly he wondered who would arrive next. "Yes a coffee please. Light cream and two sugars." He gave the girl smile before looking up as the door announced another arrival.

Shrugging on his robes, Emmett Markham checked himself in his wife's full length mirror that stood in the corner of the minimally decorated bedroom. The double bed, with cream sheets neatly folded back, took up most of the space available, sitting comfortably in the centre of the room. To the left of the headboard was the door, and to the right was a polished, redwood wardrobe. Opposite the wardrobe was the mirror which had a heavy, bronze frame. A pink armchair was tucked away into the last remaining corner, its colour complementing the redwood wardrobe and pink pillows nicely. The decoration was all Ruth's doing: Emmett wasn't exactly the best interior designer. His strengths lay in writing, which he did in his student down the hall. And transfiguration, obviously.

Once he was happy that her was smart enough and presentable, he apparated straight to Hogsmead from his bedroom. He'd learnt that when muggles saw 54 year old men in what they thought of as 'graduation robes', they tended to get a bit confused. After the incident when a woman had approached him in mid-winter once and told him graduation wasn't for another few months, so even professors didn't need to wear their robes in December, he'd learnt not to go out in his wizarding attire. Because of this he'd also discovered that apparating from his bedroom was a lot easier than trying to find a hidden corner somewhere in Central London whee he could Apparate from without being seen by muggles.

The man had a meeting in Hogsmead, in the Three Broomsticks to be exact. It was a meeting of the teachers, he supposed it was to discuss the upcoming term. While not exactly excited, Emmett was looking forward to when he would be returning to Hogwarts for the first time since graduating. However, he knew it would invite some unwelcome memories to make an appearance again. As well as Hogwarts being his school, the grounds were also the place where his dad had died. It was the place that he hadn't been at to save his loved one. It was the place where innocent blood was spilt, and it was his fault. When his father had first died, Emmett had beaten himself up about it daily. He was a Ravenclaw for goodness sake! He should've been clever enough to figure out that his dad needed him! He should have been their to protect him! As time went on however, the weary man had locked away the memories in a far corner of his mind. He'd distracted himself and stopped thinking about his dad, but now that was about to change. Now he was here, he would have no choice but to remember.

The former Ravenclaw checked his watch, staring at the silver object through his thick-rimmed glasses and clarifying that he was on time to the minute. Attempting to put on an air of authority, he strode confidentally through the door and his warm brown eyes scanned the room, searching for a friendly face, fellow professor or just an empty table. Spotting an almost empty table in the corner of the room, Emmett weaved his way through the maze of seats to where it's occupant sat, alone. The brown haired man looked younger than Emmett, and Emmett seemed to get the impression that he was waiting for someone. Quickly counting the available seats on the table Emmett assured himself that anyone arriving later to meet the man would be able to fit on as well (even if it was a group of people), and the he could always leave, or the man could tell him to go away. It was worth a try at least, and after a last quick scan of the room, the former Ravenclaw clarified that it was the only seat.

"Excuse me, is this seat taken?" He asked, gesturing to the straight backed, polished wood chair. Sliding into it, he smiled warmly at the man opposite him.

"My name is Emmett Markham. I'm going to be the Transfiguration professor at Hogwarts next term." He said, holding out his hand to shake.

Choices.

They had a way of defining a person, a way of making a person see the wrong that had once been ignored. Dom had made too many bad choices to sort through them now. However, his becoming a Death Eater didn't seem to high on the list, only his reasonings behind it. Granted, he had not been a devote follower there had been times when Voldermort had made sense. Dom knew that pure blood wasn't a greatly important thing but it did give way to circumstance. It allowed for more options and sadly he found himself agreeing with the Dark Lord those many years ago. Maybe he had been lost in his need to be noticed by his father. Whatever the reason now when he thought back on it, that path had been a fine choice.

That path had kept his family safe and out of the direct line of fire. Now he was battling a threat he wasn't too sure about and it seemed whoever it might be was always three steps ahead. This life he had now was one he was grateful for. He'd been able to see his son for the first time since his birth. Being around Cain the last term had given Dom a new look on life. He had missed the boy's whole life and to have even a small fraction of a moment with his son was worth the nights awake spent missing him. Green eyes rose as a voice brought him from his pondering.

"Uh..no it's not taken." His throat was cleared as he shifted in his seat, watching the older man as he sat across from him. "Dominic Regan." His hand rose to shake Emmett's outstretched hand. "Defense Against the Dark Arts, nice to meet you." His gaze shifted as his coffee was brought out to him. "Thanks, love." He wasted no time lifting the glass to his lips for a sip as he considered the other man now at his table. "Are you excited to be starting this term?" He had been. There had been this worry that somehow he wouldn't be able to relate to his students. It didn't take Dom long to realize that their education was more important. He didn't want to be their friend, but he was willing to give advice if sought out.

"My first few weeks were a bit of an adjustment struggle." His glass was rested back on the table as he remembered how he stumbled through his first couple of lessons. Ciara had been the voice of reason when he felt the job wasn't a good fit for him. She had told him to approach it like he had when he'd taught them something at home. Her advice had seemed to still what nerves had surfaced and Etain's mirrored advice solidified it. "It gets easier with time...plus watching it click...you know seeing one of my kids get something for the first time.." He smiled warmly at the thought, remembering how happy some students had been to cast their patronus. "It makes the bad days seem easy." And the good days seemed extraordinarily great.

Emmett smiled warmly at the man, the edges of his eyes crinkling, as she shook his hand and sat down on the wooden chair, pulling it out as much as he could in the crowded café. He was about to reply when the waitress arrived, giving Dominic Regan his drink, and the older man looked up at her.

“Could I order half a pint of butterbeer, please?“ He asked politely, his hand reaching into his robe pocket and pulling out two galleons, which he handed to her as she left. Butterbeer had always been his favourite drink while as Hogwarts, and once he was old enough he’d been at the Three Broomsticks every weekend for a drink of it when he wasn’t studying. He’d never come with anyone – he’d visit alone, taking the same table tucked away in the far corner every time.  The man hoped they hadn’t change the recipe since his adolescence all those years ago.

Turning back to the man he was sitting with, Emmett gave a shrug.

“I’m not too sure, to be perfectly honest. This place holds both good and bad memories, so I’m a bit torn over what to feel. I’m just hoping it all goes smoothly and I settle in well.” The former Ravenclaw decided not elaborate to what memories the castle held – the other man didn’t need to know. He tilted his head slightly, watching his colleague as he spoke. The 54 year old could see the reasoning behind the younger mans’ words, nodding when he said that watching the children ‘get it’ was one of the best moments. Despite how long ago it had been, the professor could clearly remember when he’d received an owl from his 11 year old daughter, exclaiming her excitement at casting ‘wingardium leviosa’ successfully for the first time. He’d felt so proud of her, and happy for her. He’d replied immediately, praising her and congratulating her. Ah, those were the good old days, when little Debra wasn’t too embarrassed to be seen in public with her dad. Then came the teenage years, the year where everything he did was an embarrassment. Then came her life as an adult… when he had to let go. It had been heart-breaking, watching his daughter apparate away to her knew house with the last of her bags. But he hadn’t had a choice – she was grown up. Everyone had always said that true love was loving someone enough to let them go, and he did. Debra was still the pride and joy of his life, despite not seeing her so often. And soon Debra would have a husband and kids of her own… but he had to stop. Giving his head a small shake, hopefully unnoticeable to his companion, Emmett had to remind himself not to get too emotional. The waitress came back and the former Ravenclaw thanked her, taking his drink. He wrapped his hands around the mug, taking a sip before looking back at Dominic. Mmm, it was delicious. The recipe hadn’t change at all since he’d last been here, over 30 year ago. A smile played on the man’s lips and he took another sip, savouring the delicious taste and letting the warmth wash over him.

The former Slytherin watched the as the older man gave his oder to the waitress, lifting his mug to his lips once more. The warm liquid left a trail as it was swallowed, causing Dom to close his eyes briefly. It had been so long since he had a decent cup of coffee. He had been too busy to stop for a drink here and there, but he was grateful for the days like this. The moments where he could simply be. His eyes swept over the room for a slow moment as his mind took him back to the battle. He had been there, robed and armed, fighting for both sides. He had watched children died and watched others survive against all odds.

He remembered what the battle had done to the school and Hogsmeade. It had been his job as a Ministry official to walk through the chaos sweeping the area for stray death eater who hadn't fled or those trapped and injured. Dom had made a lot of choices through his life but it was those made that night that haunted him the most. He would have to face the same kids who stood against him with very little chance of survival. He would stand in front of these same children, hoping that his on guilt wouldn't break him.

His brows rose as Emmett's voice broke through his thoughts. He could understand the older man's hesitation. It was hard to go back to a place that harbored both good and bad memories, at least willingly. "That's understandable." The soft thud of his mug being rested on the table filled the air around them. The former death eater looked at professor across from him for a long moment. Instinctively his hands moved to pull at the left sleeve of his sweater near his wrist. "I think the school is just one of those places. Going in you never know what to feel, being there doesn't help half the time."

The man gave a smile before speaking again. "I hope settling in is easy for you too. That was the thing that worried me the most...well aside from thinking I would botch my first lesson." His lips twitched as he thought back to the first day. He was a bundle of nerves but after a couple of lessons it became second nature. "The kids were patient with me, thankfully. I'm sure you won't have a problem though."
