[honeydukes] so much time and so little to do [jude]

january 2001

She wasn't sure how, but somehow Honey Bea Flume had just managed to outshine even herself. She paused, setting down the spoon she had ahold of in her right hand and licked a stray smudge of chocolate from her left forearm. Oh, that is good, Honey praised herself. She was just wrapping up another batch of her new cheering chocolates, something she had been hard at work on ever since the dome nonsense started on Hogwarts. This particular batch were dark chocolate with a hazelnut nougat filling. The nougat, however, also had a cheering potion mixed in. Taste testing her batches of cheering chocolates was always something that Honey looked forward to, and today was no exception.

"So great!" she cheered herself. Even without the cheering potion intoxication, Honey was usually a big fan of her work. She grinned as she filled her happy hazelnut nougat into a piping bag and quickly piped it into the chocolate half-spheres sitting in front of her. Once everything was filled, she pulled out her wand to set the halves together in pairs, admiring her work as she popped a completed chocolate into her mouth. At this point, any more cheering potion wouldn't have any more adverse affects. She wrapped up the remaining chocolates in clear plastic wrappers with another flick of her wand.

She quickly gathered up her finished work into a jar and exited the kitchen into the main part of her shop. Even with an overdose of cheering potion, Honey didn't want to clean the kitchen just yet. She widened her smile as she looked around the shop. It was just after lunchtime and almost time to open the door to the thunderous hordes of happy, hungry customers. If only. Honey set the jar down next to the till, added a handwritten placard detailing the chocolate selection and moved around the counter to head towards the door. She went ahead and unlocked the door; there probably wouldn't be anyone visiting any time soon. It was January, snow was coming down, and there wasn't about to be a Hogwarts student weekend anytime soon. In this weather, even Honey would be choosing the warm and welcoming atmosphere at the Three Broomsticks (as well as a nice warm butterbeer) over Honeydukes, despite how amazing she thought her own shop was.

Honey shrugged, however still smiling, and headed back to the kitchen. She was thinking about a cup of cocoa rather than the inevitable cleanup of her mess she had to do.

He'd never seen Hogsmeade like this. Maybe it had been during the war, when he'd been kept away from the little town, it must have been a good few years since he'd properly visited. In his mind Hogsmeade had always been a bright and shining glimmer of hope on the horizon. Something to look forward to when the weeks dragged, somewhere to escape to. Now it felt... wrong. A few aurors and people who looked like ministry-associated folk were milling about the small town, but there were no Hogwarts students. No teachers enjoying a rare afternoon off. No smiling faces chucking snowballs at each other in the streets.

Jude kicked at the snow, sending a flurry up into the air. Here it was still pristine and white, unlike the brown slurry that tended to line London's streets. His repetitive trudge between home and Knockturn alley each day was currently lined with the sludgy remains of melted ice. The short walk wasn't pretty, but it cleared his mind and gave him time to think in a way that flooing or apparating didn't.

Time to think was why he was here. A rare day off - a day when Noemi didn't need him and he'd already completed his tasks for Oogie. He hadn't had one of those since he'd started at the Devil's Den, he'd practically forgotten what free time was for. And for some reason he'd thought about Hogsmeade. About the weekend trips to the small town, and hours lingering in the apothecathy and potions store there, replenishing supplies that were already full and browsing potions he dreamed he'd one day make. He'd come on far since then, but the pull of nostalgia had been too great to resist.

Plus he'd wanted to see it for himself. The dome.

His parents were going half-mad of course, worrying about Jo. Since he'd moved out of their home and in with Noemi, he'd received a surprising amount of letters from them... but most of them centered on Jo and their worries about how the sixteen year old was faring in the unknown beyond the dome. Jude tried to reassure them, but secretly he was a little worried himself. He and Joanna had never really gotten along, but that didn't mean he didn't care about her. Or want to know she was safe. He'd heard rumours that a few people were now passing into or out of the dome... and a part of him was tempted by that madness.

He came to a halt, looking up to see where well-worn brown boots had brought him, walking without paying attention. Honeydukes. Of course. After the potions shop, this was always the next location on his list. With a shrug, he headed inside. Maybe some chocolate would do him good. Maybe he could buy his parents a box...

The bell chimed as he headed in, and he stomped the snow off of his boots on the mat, flicking down the dark grey hood of his outer robes and shaking out his bright turquoise hair. A usual check and minor panic over his appearance followed - making sure that his robes weren't bunched in the 'wrong' place, revealing what little of his breasts the binder couldn't squash down, checking his reflection in the glass and analysing quickly whether today he could pass, praying that the first words out of Flume's lips wouldn't be 'Afternoon Miss!' in a cheerful tone that he knew wasn't meant to harm, but felt like the stab of a knife every time.

But as his eyes rose to the door between kitchen and shop to see Flume approaching, it wasn't quite who he was expecting. A vaguely familiar face, but a different one from his early Hogwarts memories. A very attractive different face. "Oh.. hey," he said with a small smile, trying to keep his voice at the lower end of its natural spectrum, "Surprised you're still open. Must be pretty quiet these days, huh?"

Honey waltzed into the kitchen and grabbed a jar of dark chocolate chips off a shelf to her left. After she took a few steps away, she changed her mind and traded her choice for a jar of white chocolate chips and a parcel of peppermint candy bits. Cradling her goods in her arms, she moved towards the stove, the idea of cocoa still at the front of her mind. Cocoa now, cleaning later. There was still a bottle of milk out on the counter from her nougat making earlier and with a couple swishy wand movements, the milk was poured into a saucepan and simmering on the stove. Her fingertips had just brushed against the cold porcelain of the handle of a coffee mug when she heard that beautiful, sweet sound. The door chime.

She walked quickly, nearly bouncing on her toes, and reentered the main area of the shop. A person! A real person! And one she hadn’t seen before, or at least any time recently; it wasn’t often that an adult visited Honeydukes for their first time. Even better! Not that she had anything against the lovely residents of Hogsmeade or the few happy faces of the Ministry workers she saw every now and then, but Honey Bea was missing the variety that her once busy shop usually provided.

And oh, his hair matched her shop. “Hi!” Honey replied enthusiastically, her cheering potion nowhere close to wearing off anytime soon. “Just opened actually. You’re right on time.” She paused, nodding vigorously, “Hasn’t been this quiet since You-Know-Who and all the curfew nonsense.” That was definitely one sentence the former Slytherin never thought she would be saying with a smile. She shrugged, bending to rest her elbows on the counter in front of her, her hand balled into a fist under her chin. “And you’re in luck! Usually sample day is on Sunday but I have decided to move it up to today! Sample Tuesday.” Samples every day, really. Although Honeydukes wasn’t serving its usual number of hungry people, Honey Bea was still creating things like it was, if only to give herself something to do and focus on. But, without people eating the things she made, she had started wasting more than she was comfortable with, and then she had started giving things away to whoever visited.

“Feel free to try whatever, just mind not putting any fingers that you’ve licked into a jar without a good cleaning first!” She nodded again, grinning. Even if she wasn’t a bit potion drunk, she would have been just as happy to see someone in the shop.

Honey had practically ran into the room and Jude realised that his comment was probably a lot truer than even he'd expected. She was probably bored out of her mind. Boredome wasn't something that featured a lot in Jude's current double life. Keeping himself busy at the Devil's Den as well as working with Noemi... and if there was any time left, he was in the deli. It was a wonder he was getting any sleep really.

"Mmh sounds good," he responded, in a rather cheerful tone. Her mood was apparently catching. It was difficult not to be joyful with her smile and enthusiasm... plus a room full of sweets helped as well. He began to meander around the shop, thinking about what to buy for his parents... maybe something for Noemi too... and for a moment, in blind generosity, he even thought briefly about Oogie before shutting it down. That would just come across as him being sycophantic, and that wasn't a reputation he wanted for himself. Obeying the scary, dangerous criminal kingpin was one thing, sucking up to him was another entirely.

"So you've been keeping busy then?" he asked, reaching for a white chocolate truffle and popping it into his mouth, the strong taste of passionfriut quickly flooding his senses and practically transporting him to some idyllic tropical isle. "It's... Honey.. isn't it?" he asked, looking over at her, the name finally clicking into place. She'd been a lot younger the last time he'd seen her... as had he of course... he was having trouble keeping his eyes off of her.

"I'm managing I guess!" she said, extending her smile, even though she was a bit put out about the lack of business her shop was pulling in these days. "I just made these," she added, motioning to the jar of cheerful chocolates she had just put out, with the neat little sign saying they had a hazelnut nougat cheering potion center. "I may have had one. Or two. I'm realizing now I might have overdone it," she concluded with a laugh. "But at least it means my cheering potion is effective!" She laughed again. She wanted him to try the cheering chocolate, if only to not be the happiest person in the room anymore, and to get a second opinion on what she assumed was a very tasty treat, though her opinions were slightly biased.

She beamed that he had known her name; it was always so nice to be recognized, and even better to be recognized when already blissfully happy. "Honey, Honey Bea, Honey Bea Flume, it's short for Beatrix actually." Honey nodded vigorously. She almost never willingly told people her name was actually Beatrix but apparently today was a day to be happy and not mind other people knowing how incredibly old-ladylike her given name sounded.

Despite him knowing her name, Honey Bea was having trouble placing him as well. "No offense, but I can't seem to remember your name," she half-questioned. Normally, she wouldn't really care, as long as they knew who she was, but Honey was having trouble being anything other than polite. She'd have to remember to make some kind of something to help bring down the side effects of this cheering chocolate. Sadness sugar puffs. Or something.

Her mind somehow jumped from sadness sugar puffs to the pot of milk she had left simmering on the stove. "Oh, Merlin's toenails!" she yelped happily, rushing off to the kitchen. "I forgot I was making hot chocolate!" She yelled from the kitchen, laughing, seemingly pleased she had nearly burnt the milk. "Peppermint white chocolate if you'd like some!"
