I was falling hard
you were barely hanging on

Christmas meant a lot of things to Birgitte Trickett. Warmer clothes, two months of finding the perfect gifts for the crazy number of family members she had, powdery flour and the scent of cinnamon (and Cinnamon, who couldn't resist the warmth) and vanilla filling Brita and Liv's kitchen as the girls baked cookies for the little ones. Brita was a summer girl, but the 24-year-old loved the holiday season with all her heart. More than any other holiday--and that included that infernally commercial February holiday--Christmas was a holiday about love, and she was full of it. And that was a powerful thing for the former Gryffindor.

Extra cookies from their latest test batch of something called an eggnog florentine tucked under her arm, Brita marched up to the entrance of St. Mungo's, giving the ugly dummy in the window a sunny smile. "Hi, here to see Ragnhild Trickett," she said, using the name of a great-great-aunt who was in long term care and who was the default excuse any time she wanted to see @Hal Trickett. She wasn't here to see her great-great-aunt or her cousin today, though. Instead, Brita parked herself on a spare chair near the exit of the emergency wing, stealing a sidelong glance at a nearby wizard's wrist for the time. Ben had mentioned he had an early shift today, just in passing, but she had remembered. She was pleased with herself for even being early--obviously, if she'd been just a few minutes late as she might otherwise have been, she'd miss him leaving.

A considerable number of the nearby people, usually waiting anxiously for news about their loved ones, distracted themselves with the Prophet or Witch Weekly, but Brita's eyes roved from person to person instead. The normally chatty young woman's loquacious tendencies were muted in this situation: it would be too insensitive to distract many of them with small talk, and too difficult to identify the people who would appreciate it. Every time a flash of lime green swept by, Brita's eyes flicked up and down again. It only took a second to recognize Ben when he finally came out.

Getting up, she followed him down the hall out of earshot of the families before tapping him on the shoulder. "Hey, Healer Fletcher," she said with a smile, "I remembered you said your shift ended at 4pm today, so I was hoping to catch you." She lifted the container of cookies. "Thought maybe you could use a little pick-me-up at the end of the day?" And after all, a good mood was sure to help her chances. She'd already eaten a few herself: sugar was solid courage.

Whistling through his teeth, Healer Fletcher signed off on his most recent patient’s chart and stole a glance up at the clock for the tenth time in as many minutes, still hardly daring to believe it. There was an age-old superstition among emergency staff that if you commented on – or even thought too much about – how slow a shift was, the universe would invariably throw it right back in your face, post-haste, and promptly swamp you with new intakes.

But, sure enough, the clock read 3:57pm – and all was quiet.

Well, mostly. There was no such thing as true quiet in the Emergency Healing wing. The influx of patients had gradually stemmed to a trickle, despite the time (which normally saw an uptick in activity since the typical workday was drawing to a close), and those that were coming in had very straightforward, relatively minor complaints: a cut from a poorly-attended enchanted kitchen knife that was just a bit too deep for the average Episkey, an ugly-looking but rather superficial burn from a Fire Crab (though based on the man’s story, Ben was surprised that the Ministry had actually granted this man a license to keep one), and one or two other such complaints. Only a few patients who had been seen remained in the department, and they were merely waiting to be sent up to the floors once beds became available and not in need of any further immediate care.

Today was a rare day, indeed.

Usually when his shift was scheduled to end at a certain time, it was a tacit understanding that he wouldn’t truly be finished with sign-out and whatnot for at least another 30 minutes to an hour. Healing was not about clocking out on time; it was about clocking out once the work had been done, and the patients stabilized and properly signed-out to the next Healer on duty. Today, though, clocking out on time and clocking out when the work was done happened to coincide with exceedingly rare and glorious perfection.

Perhaps he should buy a lottery ticket.

Lingering for another minute to be certain that all was in order and that no one needed any additional help, the Gryffindor alumnus waved cheerily to his colleagues and made his way to the lockers to change back into his street clothes and deposit his robes in the hospital’s staff laundry service. He never wore his Healer’s robes outside the hospital: for one, it was downright tacky and ostentatious to do so; for two, it was a biohazard, considering he’d had a good chance of having Merlin-knew-what contagions splattered all over them throughout the course of the shift.

Coiling his scarf around his neck and shrugging into his jacket, Ben pushed open the double doors to exit the wing. He was dressed a bit more formally than usual: he had volunteered to be on the planning committee for the Grand Ball for charity scheduled to take place next month, and had to attend a 7am meeting in one of the board rooms prior to his shift starting at 8am.
It felt odd to be leaving after only eight hours of work – Ben typically preferred to work 12-hour shifts, as he found them to provide better continuity with hand-offs – but couldn’t say that he wasn’t enjoying it.

His sense of enjoyment – and his heart rate – took another upward leap when a familiar voice accompanied a light tap on his shoulder.
“Brita!”
He beamed, not bothering to hide his delight at seeing her. How on earth had she remembered that? It wasn’t as though he’d made a point of mentioning it or anything, and Brita was a busy woman herself. It was a simple gesture, but a warm sensation bloomed in his chest regardless.
“You certainly picked a good day – any other and you might still be sitting there, waiting, an hour from now,” he laughed, showing a flash of white teeth. “Now I know why it was so slow all afternoon: the patients must have known you were coming and behaved themselves accordingly so I’d be able to leave on time.”

It was only as he tore his eyes away from her face long enough to glance down at the tin in her hands that he realized the ‘pick-me-up’ she’d spoken of was not, in fact, a reference to herself. He stared at the tin perhaps a second too long before recovering himself, eyes widening and putting a hand theatrically to his chest as he took a peek inside.
“What, for me? You know I’d never turn down sweets.” He dimpled at her, snaking a hand into the tin (“Don’t give me that look, I’ve just washed them!”) to retrieve a cookie and took a large bite.
“These are excellent,” he told her emphatically, giving her a thumbs-up with his free hand. “Did you and Liv make these? What exactly are they?”
Ben knew, obviously, that Brita shared a flat with her cousin Liv, and he also remembered quite well that Christmas cookies were a big deal in the Trickett clan. Baking genes must surely run in the family, as though Crust & Crumbs wasn’t evidence enough: he couldn’t recall a single thing Brita had made that was anything less than excellent.

but in my mind, we're somewhere in my car and it's raining hard on the streetlight glow
you got your lips on mine, it's gasoline on fire, I never will forget

I'd give anything if I could bring you back home

From over his shoulder, Brita's eyes lit up with warmth as he wrapped her in his arms briefly. She took a reflexive breath, appreciating the masculine scent he'd retained underneath hours of undoubtedly messy work. "I guess it's just my lucky day, then," she said, her smile sunny as she heard his appreciation coming through his voice. "Or, well, everyone's lucky day, really." The less people that needed to come into the emergency wing, the better for the whole country.

Ben looked a little shellshocked at the sight of food, and she stuck her head into his line of vision, shaking them concernedly. "I promise they're real, I'm not good at illusions," she teased, stealing one herself as he took a bite. "Why thank you! Yes we did. They're called eggnog florentines," she said, the last bit slightly muffled by chewing but still sufficiently clear to be heard. Swallowing and starting the familiar path out of the hospital, she explained, "we're letting our creations duke it out in a bracket elimination round for what we'll bring our little cousins for Christmas. I think this one has the edge over the gingerbread cookies this year, but it may yet get beaten by the biscotti." She gave a cheery wave to the welcome witch, who didn't quite respond but might have twitched a corner of her mouth. Brita suspected she preferred to see people leaving than entering.

As they stepped out onto the pavement, Brita finished her cookie and tilted her head to look at Ben. "I did have another motive in coming down here, though," she said, trying to sound nonchalant. "Have you heard of that Wizarding village out in Dorset that's really into their Christmas lights? I've never gone, but I was wondering if you wanted to check them out with me?" The witch could have left it at that, but she felt compelled to further explain things, almost to reduce the pointedness of the question. "Rachel told me they're planning something extravagant this year, something about the town's six hundredth anniversary. I figure something that big isn't gonna happen again until we're a little old for it." She laughed, with a hopeful undercurrent. While they met up frequently, this was a little bit bigger and more intentional than the other things they did. She hoped he would get the message that it was important to her.

“Eggnog Florentine, hmm? Merlin, you two are stepping up the competition,” he teased. He closed his eyes in exaggerated bliss as he popped the remainder of the cookie into his mouth; though, in truth, he really didn’t have to exaggerate much. They were that good.

Ben laughed out loud as she mentioned creating a tournament-style bracket for the cookies, following her lively step out of the hospital.
“Ooh these have got to be good to win out over gingerbread… but I'm probably just biased.” He gave a casual shrug and fished into the tin for another. He hadn’t realized how hungry he actually was until he’d started eating. “Anything mint or gingerbread and I'm sold.”

Blinking in the surprisingly bright December sunlight, he had to squint to properly see Brita’s face without being completely blinded.
“Have you heard of that Wizarding village out in Dorset that’s really into their Christmas lights? I’ve never gone, but I was wondering if you wanted to check them out with me?”
His heart skipped a beat. A Christmas-lit evening with Brita sounded like the ideal winter’s night, in his opinion. She was saying something else but Ben was already nodding, nearly choking on his second cookie in his haste to answer.

“Yeah that— that sounds great,” he sputtered, eyes watering thanks to the bit of cookie attempting to lodge itself in his trachea. “I’d love to. Really,” he added with a toothy grin once he’d recovered himself. There were precious few things he enjoyed more than Brita’s company, and that list got shorter by the day. It was impossible not to want to spend time with her. She was intoxicating in all of the good ways: her smile, her laughter, her boundless enthusiasm, her support, her friendship.

He had known for some time, now, that this friendship was evolving into something more on his end. And he had struggled with whether or not to express it. What if she didn’t feel the same way? Would their friendship be forever changed if she didn’t? He needed to taste his own medicine, in a sense, because if a friend had approached him with this dilemma he would have advised just going for it; what was the worst that could happen? He was twenty-six years old, for Merlin’s sake, and had dated girls before – but somehow was feeling more and more like a sixteen-year-old.

Maybe this evening of Christmas-light display – were they even tonight? He’d been too distracted by the prospect of spending an evening with her to pay attention to that important detail – would be the night. The time for deliberating was past.

"And here I thought you didn't like to be all bogged down with tradition," she tsked in mock disapproval. "Gingerbread is the oldest in the book! Plus, you just called them excellent, so unless you want to take that back..." she let the idea hang in the air, along with the implied threat. Not that there was any substance behind it--the last time Brita had been genuinely angry with someone had been...well, probably when Chad had screwed that random seventeen-year-old and dumped Lila by sending her a picture in the post. That had been a good six months ago, but now that she remembered it set her blood to boiling again before she hastily looked at Ben, which calmed her down. The sun was in her direction, so she had a clearer view of him as he squinted towards her, her gaze lingering on his ears and how cute they looked for several seconds before she realized he was nodding and quickly focused again.

He was nodding, and he was smiling--well, he did after he looked a little pained for a minute, she was half tempted to ask if he was okay but remembered he was a Healer, he would probably know when he was in trouble, right?--but did he get the message? Maybe she shouldn't have qualified it, it would have sounded more like a proper date then, right? Merlin, now she was going to have to work up to some other kind of display. She wasn't sixteen anymore, she probably couldn't get away with just...dangling her hand in a holdable position for a while. Outwardly, she grinned back at him. "I was hoping you'd say that." Brita tried really hard to be authentic in her expressions, and her cheerfulness wasn't a front, but just occasionally it was just a lifeline of familiar territory that she was clinging to.

It was getting dark already--the sun had already set--but it wasn't really dark enough for lights yet. Truth be told, she hadn't really thought ahead; she wasn't even sure he would be free today, or that he'd say yes, and had figured her gut would improvise if necessary. She glanced down the street for ideas. "Um, well, I don't think it'll be dark enough til six or so. You want to get something more substantial than cookies? I found a great shawarma place a few blocks down. I think I've got some Muggle cash." Brita would try anything once, and she'd gotten to try a lot more food after leaving Hogwarts, whose house-elves seemed stalwart adherents to the British tradition, barring that time they'd hosted the students for the Triwizard Tournament. Hopefully Ben wouldn't hate the idea. Even a quick dinner was a sort of date-like thing, and as most of their encounters involved their pets or exercise food wasn't often on the agenda.

He feigned offense at her dig at traditional cookies, blue eyes wide.
“Hey, hey, they’re not mutually exclusive! I can like my traditional things, too.”

Ben’s interest was piqued at the proposition of dinner. He was ravenous – and there could hardly be a better end-of-shift than a dinner ‘date’ with Brita.
“While I would happily subsist off of your delightful cookies,” he grinned, “shawarma sounds excellent.” Ben didn’t usually carry Muggle money on him, but he’d happily give her the equivalent in wizarding currency; she’d probably refuse it, though, so he’d have to be sneaky about it.

After a moment’s hesitation, heart fluttering in his throat, he offered her his arm with a cheeky grin.
“Shall we?”

Brita rolled her eyes at him and grinned. "Nope, you have to pick one, either you get to eat them or you don't," she winked. It seemed like she had picked a good idea - either that, or he'd say yes to anything right now, which would also be great, given the circumstances of the whole thing - so that was excellent. Maybe she'd take Freya back with her here later, so she could both tell her younger cousin the story and recreate the ambiance. Meanwhile, she beamed at him, and was surprised when he stuck out his arm.

Oh, is that how it was going to be? Her smile turned as cheeky as his. "Excuse me, sir, last I checked you don't know quite where you're going." She reached out a hand to grab his arm, and then slid her fingers down to his hand instead. With a significant look, she tugged him in the direction of the restaurant. In her head, Brita was memorizing how this felt. She thought she'd want to remember someday.

now I wanna chase forever down
with you around
