[milan] elegance is elimination [lea]

Desdemona idly swung her hips, swooshing her large, frothy skirt over the floor. It was a strangely pleasing feeling. Fashion wasn’t new territory for her, but she’d never worn a ballgown like this before. Of course, there was no reason why anyone would ever need to wear something this wildly impractical, but she didn’t imagine Lea Dörfler was in fashion for the practicality of worn garments as much as for the creation of art that just happened to use the body as a canvas.

Des didn’t really mind.

She’d surprised herself, with the ease with which she’s taken to modeling. Presumably because it was an easy job. She was very good at wearing clothes. Posing, too. Her father liked to take vacation photos, and only took still Muggle ones. Des had learned after a while the best angle at which to hold her face, the most flattering position in which to sit. Posing for moving magical photographs was different, of course. But still easier.

The surprise wasn’t that she was good at it—it was that she thought she might have been enjoying it. She’d wanted to refuse at first, just at the thought. Her? A model? She couldn’t have thought of anything more frivolous. But her mother had strongly encouraged her when Lea had come up to them at lunch in Milan, and Emilia was away playing Quidditch, and it wasn’t as if she was throwing away a real career by taking this particular job offer. She had come into it without much in the way of expectations. And now she was sort of having fun.

The hairstylist approached to loosen a few of her curls from the pins at her temples, and asked how she was holding up.

“Great,” said Des. She swooshed her skirt once more and smoothed a crease at her stomach. “I did like the last dress better, though,” she admitted. “The appliqué on this bodice is so heavy-looking, isn’t it? It’s a strange choice with a skirt this delicate.” She lifted the top layer of tulle from her skirt, bringing it to her waist to contrast the airy petals and feathers with the thick, white scroll. “Don’t you think it would be prettier if it were more subtle?”
