"Thank you so much for coming!"
The voice belonged to a tall blonde woman who enveloped a friend in a tight hug, rocking them from side to side as she swayed. It was her birthday! It wasn't a "big" birthday but every birthday was a big one for Erika. Turning another year older was no big deal but a Friday night in Paris certainly was. The party had sort of taken over the bar, with people dancing to the band, clinking glasses, chatting, spilling into the pre-opera crowd who eyed them perhaps a little cautiously.
She didn't think she was drunk but she was well on the way to being. Erika was happy as she surveyed the party, a moment by herself as she chewed on her lower lip in a vain attempt to hide her excitement. Her head bobbed to the music that the band was playing (a sort of upbeat jazz/synth pop mash up) waving to people trickling in and rushing to greet them.
As per tradition, she had a "friend party" and a "family party." She didn't get it, either, considering that everyone usually went to both. The Tricketts were more like a tribe - or a cult, whichever. Every single member was fully submerged in birthday parties and being shy...wasn't really an option. Erika had been back in Europe for less than twenty four hours, her skin a golden brown from the Egyptian sun and she was still a little bit jet lagged.
With a flair for the dramatic, Erika spun and struck a pose.
What's the occasion? "I am," she said brightly, her grin widening as she saw the man himself. "Hello," she offered kindly as she tried her best to hide her surprise. Since
when did Quidditch superstars just casually drop by?
"No," Erika replied darkly as her eyes slid from Harlan to Chantel who had her arms around her new beau quite aggressively. She pulled a face, halfway between a wince and a grimace. "She neglected to mention that," she added brightly, her smile still in place. "But welcome," she said gamely. "Nice to see you as always," she said smoothly. If anything, Erika was rather flattered he'd haul himself out to the middle of Paris in the cold spring air.
When offered a card, she snorted with laughter. "Thank you," Erika preened as she adjusted her
jacket to take the card and open it. She grinned quickly, flicking her big blue eyes up to his. "Nice," she laughed as she held it up, instantly shunted back eighteen months. It was a private joke - but one that could be turned into a very public one if he wasn't careful. She turned the card over in her hands, still smiling. "I could probably sell this," she joked, meaning the card that he'd signed. "What, with it being a genuine Harlan Bellamy signature and all," she slid it and the IOU into her trouser pocket. A little birdy told her he'd stopped signing autographs a long time ago.
"So, what're you doing here?" Erika asked Harlan cheerfully. "Other than celebrating me, of course," she grinned, hands on her hips, momentarily distracted by Chantel and her new boyfriend grinding out of time with the music on the dance floor. She swiftly pretended to gag. Then it clicked.
"Oh!" She gasped, her eyes wide as she clapped her hands together in glee. "You're the back up plan." Erika grinned from ear to ear as she realised that Harlan was simply here to protect his friends. "He definitely doesn't need saving," she said in jest, nodding to the dance floor behind Harlan's shoulder where acrobatics were moments away from kicking off. Mesmerised momentarily, she turned her attention back to the Quidditch player. "That's hilarious," she said, sounding smug, as though the idea of Harlan ever needing to be someone's wingman was just insane. It was nice to know that no one was immune to getting vibe checked.
"Drink?" Erika asked, grabbing Harlan a lager without asking if he still drank it or wanted something stronger. "Oooh," she whispered as she spotted someone with a tray of glasses. "Shots," she explained, grabbing his sleeve and dragging him with her.
