a friend in need is a friend indeed (Wendy)

The camp was so amazing! Trudy had enjoyed every single minute of it so far. The activities were great fun and the best thing about it was that she shared a cabin with Wendy. They'd spend the time before falling asleep at night together to discuss the past day and plan what else they wanted to do the next. While the two girls did a lot together both of them also went their own ways, making the night talk even more interesting as they could then share information on the new friends they made, the great activities they had tried out…

Last night the two girls had decided that they'd go exploring for a bit; just the two of them and not as a part of an organised camp activity. It could be their biggest adventure yet or so Trudy thought. Exploring on their own was something very special, something they would probably still talk about for weeks, maybe even months.

After breakfast Trudy slipped off her sandals and got into her hiking boots. She packed her rucksack with all that she found necessary, snacks, drinks, a rope, a small blanket, an old compass she had found at Coakley's Curios and, of course, Edna the erumpent. Trudy didn't mind if people laughed at her for still carrying her plushy with her as Edna was a faithful companion and her confidant. The erumpent was with her for several years already now and Trudy felt certain there were still many years to come.

The girl stood in the cabin chewing on her lip and looking around. What else could be useful for their trip? She shrugged, deciding that she had all she needed and closed the rucksack letting the head of Edna the erumpent stick out – after all, her plushy friend wanted to see everything as well!

She turned to Wendy now, smiling widely. “Are you ready?! Anything else we need? Do you think a jacket is needed?” she asked, excitement clearly audible in her voice. The girl could hardly wait to leave the cabin and get out. It was still morning, though not that early any more. From what Trudy had heard from the counsellors the other day the weather might not stay all that great for the entire day but at this point the sky was still blue and the sun was shining. Everything seemed to be just perfect for a little exploration.

“Shall we go? Edna and I are ready,” she said, giggling. “Hopefully the weather stays so nice!”

Wendy was really excited to be spending time with Trudy. She loved all of her friends dearly and had truly enjoyed the many memories they had made together at camp so far but so far she hadn’t had the opportunity to do something just with her roommate and that had been a real bummer for Wendy who was especially fond of spending time with fellow Ravenclaws. Though Wendy suspected she might have been a little biased, being on the same wavelength was not easy with just about anybody. The two young girls had decided to go exploring on their own, ready to use their knowledge from various other camp activities they had participated in as well as their own thirst for knowledge to make their own brand of adventure.

The young Willbond prepared her bag thoroughly, making sure to pack some snacks, a bottle full of water, and of course, one of the novels she was still working on. It was a little heavy but the girl couldn’t just leave it sitting on her bed looking so lonely. If anything, Wendy could do something when they took a break or if Trudy was interested, the two could have a nice little chat about her favorite series and maybe she’d be able to convert her into a fan like she had with Benny already.

“Hmm—I don’t think it’s going to rain or anything, will we be out late? Do we need something to light our path or something? I’m bringing plenty of snacks, do you know how to start a fire?” she asked. Wendy had some survival skills but probably not enough to survive a night out in the woods. And, after all those awful stories she had to listen to the previous night, Wendy was beginning to think that getting stuck in the woods overnight was not the sort of adventure she wanted to have. “I wish we could use magic,” she added as an afterthought, though at her age there wasn’t much she could do if the situation became dangerous. But maybe between Trudy and her, they’d be able to figure things out. They were fellow Ravenclaws after all, they were considered clever for good reason.

“Ah now I wish I had someone to travel with,” she lamented with a smile, finding Trudy’s erumpent extremely cute and wishing she had a stuffed animal of her own. Wendy did have a stuffed cat that she slept with back on the farm but had decided not to bring it along for fear that she would lose it or worse, her friends would make fun of her for carrying it around. “I’m ready, do you think we should go through the woods behind the cabin or the ones on the other side of the lake?” she suggested, opening the door for Trudy before walking out behind her.

As Wendy spoke about the weather and asked if they'd be out late, Trudy chewed on her lip thoughtfully. “Well,” she said after some deliberation. “I've heard that the forecast was not so great for today but it looks nice enough so let's just hope the weather stays like that for the rest of the day. I'm not too eager to take a jacket if it might not be needed at all.” She paused briefly, glancing at Edna who looked at her from the rucksack.

“I think we should see that we are back before it gets dark.” She suggested. “I mean, I'm not scared but it might be hard to find out way back and I doubt we'd have much fun then.” She shrugged as though it was not a terrifying thought to get lost but merely something that was not much fun.

Thinking about the fire Wendy mentioned, Trudy looked around. She had seen matches somewhere. “I don't know how to start a fire. I mean, I've heard about rubbing stones together and all this kind of stuff but it never worked for me?” She giggled. “I think I've seen matches in the cabin or… was it somewhere else? I'm not sure. Do we need to make a fire, though, if we are back by the time it gets dark?”

Trudy nodded strongly as Wendy said she wished they'd be allowed to use magic. Of course, as an incoming second year she was not exactly proficient at magic yet but it would feel better to have her wand. She'd definitely manage to light a fire then.

A beaming smile spread across Trudy's face as her dorm mate said she wished she'd have someone to travel with like Trudy had Edna. “You need to go to that toy shop in Hogsmeade at some point and find yourself a faithful companion!” she suggested. “I'll come with you and help you pick one if you like.”

Wendy's next question made Trudy think for a few seconds. “Hmm… I think it might be interesting to go to the other side of the lake? I haven't really explored that part a lot yet and it looks pretty from here.” As they stepped outside the girl smiled widely. “This is going to be so much fun!” she exclaimed excitedly.

If Trudy wasn’t scared of the dark, she was the only one in the room. Wendy didn’t like the idea of staying out late mostly because she wasn’t completely convinced that the hidebehinds or other scary creatures didn’t exist in the woods and she wasn’t going to stay in there long enough to find out either. The young Willbond had a very overactive imagination that often made anything, even the most harmless of objects, seem like monsters from another dimension when the light shone on them in a specific way. But Trudy was a fellow Ravenclaw which could only mean that she had a good head on her shoulders and would figure out a way to get them out of trouble if Wendy was too shocked by fear to do it herself.

Thinking about it was enough to make her feel afraid again. “You’re right,” she conceded, “We’ll be back before it gets dark so we shouldn’t need them, plus I think we might get in trouble carrying matches around, sounds like it’d be dangerous,” she reasoned with a small shrugged, smiling as she felt a little more confident after hearing Trudy giggle. Maybe she was blowing this entire thing out of proportion like she thought she might. Of course not of that stopped her from exploring.

“Yes, please do!” she said excitedly to Trudy’s offer, a much more pleasant topic than the idea of what lurked in the woods at night. “Which animal do you think fits me best?” she wondered out loud, thinking back to the cat that was probably waiting faithfully for her to return to her bed. Wendy was more of an animal person than just a cat person in general so she was curious about what Trudy might think.

“Good idea! Do you think we can get in the water if it’s not too late? I’ve been practicing my swimming and I think I’ve gotten pretty good,” she offered, looking in the direction of the lake, “I’m very excited!” she claimed, her voice rising in pitch slightly as if to make her point more evident, “What do you think is on the other side?” she asked.

"That's true," Trudy said nodding. She wasn't exactly sure how matches worked other than that she knew how to light one. However, the process behind that and what they were actually made of were a bit of a mystery. Could they possibly light themselves when carried in her rucksack? Edna could get burned then. It was clearly not an option to take matches with them on their trip. It was far too dangerous.

"How many hours do we have until it gets dark?" she asked thoughtfully, trying to come up with a super safe plan how to make sure that they'd be back before it was too late. "It's what now? 9 am? And it gets dark around what? 10 pm? That would mean we'd have 13 hours until we need to be back here. If we walk for like..." she rubbed her chin thoughtfully, "up to four hours in one direction and then make our way back we should be back in time even if we don't take exactly the same way back. Don't you think?" Trudy though that her plan sounded quite reasonable but somehow she had a feeling that there was something that she hadn't considered yet.

"Oh hmm," Trudy said, thinking what kind of   stuffed animal would suit her friend. "They have a lot of amazing plushies," she said nodding eagerly as she wrecked her brain for something that she saw as a good companion for Wendy. "I think a jackalope would work well!" she suddenly said brightly. Trudy knew a lot of creatures though her mother being a magizoologist but wasn't exactly sure that they had a jackalope at the shop. "They're also from around here. Maybe we see a real one when we go exploring!" The girl smiled widely now. That would be so perfect! They'd see a real jackalope and then, kind of as a reminder of their exploration, Wendy could get a jackalope plushy.

Wendy's suggestion of swimming in the lake sounded intriguing and so the little Ravenclaw nodded eagerly. "Oh yes!" she said brightly, "that would be fun. Maybe we should do that on our way back. Once we reach the lake again there's not much that could delay our return to the camp, right? Besides I guess our feet will be aching by then so cool water would be good," she giggled at that, thinking that after their hike they definitely needed a bath for the sore feet and also because they might feel hot overall.

"Hmm," Trudy said, already stepping out of the cabin and looking at the lake. "Looks like more forest and mountains from here... It might be similar to this side or..." she said, pausing and continuing in a dramatically serious voice, "it might be a completely different world over there. Shall we just pretend that we're real explorers and the first ones to find that area?" She giggled softly. Trudy absolutely loved the idea of making their adventure even more exciting than it already was.

“Did you pack enough snacks until then?” Wendy wondered, suddenly wishing she had eaten a bigger breakfast if they were going to go on a long adventure like that. Not that she minded, it was exciting to know that they would have the opportunity to wander for so long without adult supervision. It wasn’t as if Hogwarts allowed its students to have that sort of fun which was very unfortunate because Wendy just knew that there were still so many treasures that needed to be discovered. “But I think you’re right,” she continued with a smile, “As long as we walk back in the same direction, we should be fine!” she said with much optimism.

“A jackalope?” she raised her eyebrows in surprise, remembering having read about them in a textbook before but never actually knowing that they hailed from these parts of the world. Now, that was exciting. “Should’ve read a bit more on them then,” she added sheepishly, hoping she’d have more to add to the conversation other than repeating what Trudy had just said. Trudy was so smart! Wendy wondered if the girl was going to do something with magical creatures in the future or maybe something similar. “I hope we see a jackalope,” she reflected.

“I think the journey will go perfectly alright!” she mused, looking up at the sky and cupping a hand over her eyebrows to keep the sun from burning her eyes out, that would not be a good start to this journey. “I brought a whistle too,” she pointed at the whistle around her neck. “If we get lost or something, I heard it helps,” she suggested. Wendy had bought it from a toy shop so she was not sure how well it worked but it would hopefully be better than nothing.

“Ah yes, I like that very much!” she said with excitement at the idea of playing the role of explorers. “I read a book about this once, she started to walk, looping her thumbs around the straps of her backpack for something to do. “Explorers going off into this magical land they’d never discovered before in search of a magical trinket, they ended up getting lost for a while in this other dimension, it was super weird,” she started, hoping she wouldn’t bore Trudy with her book musings. “Anyway, learned a lot of tips in it about what to do in case of scary situations,” she explained but secretly hoped that none of what awaited them included deadly magical creatures and evil wizards. “Do you venture out a lot at home?” she asked curious about Trudy’s home life.

"I don't know if I packed enough... I mean, hiking trips do make one hungry, but I certainly did put a lot into my rucksack," Trudy said, shrugging. She nodded and smiled brightly as her friend said that she thought she was right and they'd be fine and not get lost. It was not that hard to navigate if they did not turn left or right too often. As long as they walked into one direction they should be fine just turning around and walking back the same way. Maybe there was even a path they could take so that they'd be entirely safe.

"They're so cute!" Trudy exclaimed as Wendy reacted to her suggestion of the jackalope. "Honestly, it's such a pretty animal. My mother told me a bit about them. They're such peaceful creatures. Their antlers are known to be used as wand cores, but my mom says that some nasty people hunt them just to get their antlers... and they're an extant species now..." The Ravenclaw frowned and shook her head in disgust. "I wish there was something that could be done to protect them."

She nodded eagerly as Wendy said that she hoped they'd see a jackalope on their little adventure. "Yes," she exclaimed, "I'd love that. I mean, they are rare now but there are some of them still living around here."

Trudy giggled as Wendy mentioned bringing a whistle. She wasn't exactly sure how it would help them if they got lost with no other people around. However, it would surely be helpful if they happened to separate so they'd find each other again. "Yeah," she agreed, "it might help if we separate what we totally should avoid though." She smiled at her friend and took a deep breath. She was so ready to start their adventure now.

"That book sounds interesting!" Trudy said excitedly. "I'd love to read it. I really like reading about adventures." She hoped that she could borrow the book from Wendy sometime. However, she was not going to ask for it just yet. Now she wanted to experience their own little adventure.

"Not so much," Trudy said, shrugging. "I..." she blushed a little and kicked a stone with her foot, "I rather play adventuring in the garden? Or, well, I used to do that before I started at Hogwarts. You know that my grandmother is an actress and playing with her is so much fun." She grinned at her friend now, thinking about how amazing it was to have such a wonderful grandmother.

Wendy was no stranger to the hunting of animals for wand cores, it wasn’t as if the one within her wand had been ethically resourced, or at least probably not considering the amount of money her parents paid for it. Nevertheless, the thought that a jackalope, a creature that Wendy had decided must have been considered so cute it could be turned into a plushie. Even so, hearing what Trudy had to say about the hunting of jackalopes made her sad. “That’s really sad,” she expressed, her voice lowering in tune with the mood of the conversation, wishing there was something that she could do about it. Even though the Willbonds lived off of their farm, respecting the animals was still an important part of learning how to coexist with them.

“But even if they’re rare I think…maybe if we saw one it would be like a symbol of good luck,” she suggested, liking the idea that seeing one might be tied to the outcome of their journey. Wendy had a knack for finding the fantastical in everything.

The young girl looked into the horizon, wishing that she would have brought more books along for the journey that she could show Trudy. Since the other girl was a Ravenclaw, Wendy was certain that she would appreciate them even if she didn’t exactly like the genre. But then when she continued on to express interest, Wendy considered that they might get along book wise as well. “Well now that we’re going on one, maybe we can write one of our own,” she suggested with excitement. Wendy often wrote about her experiences at Hogwarts in her journal with hopes that one day those ideas would prove useful. Far away from home and walking into the dense woods, the girl sensed that she’d have many more interesting things to write this time around.

“Really?” Wendy looked over at Trudy, her eyes widening in surprise. That was something the girl was not aware of. Wendy looped her thumbs into her backpack, making it much easier to carry. “Was she in theater? What was she in?” she asked with much enthusiasm. She continued to walk forward, almost tripping over a small rock sticking out from the dirt but recovering quickly. Looking over at Trudy, she smiled.

“It is, isn't it?” Trudy sighed. She was just a kid though, what could she do about poor animals being hunted because they had something special about them that made them valuable for wandmakers. Truth be told the girl had imagined herself in several professions over the years and clearly, after she had got her own wand, she had also considered becoming a wandmaker very briefly. She had played it out with her grandmother but the elderly muggle had not been too enthusiastic about it and Trudy had soon found that, maybe, it was not quite right for her anyway. However, now that she spoke to Wendy, the Ravenclaw felt that she would not want to be a wandmaker at all. She'd rather try and protect animals from being hunted than to use their antlers or whichever body part had magical properties than to work with them.

“My wandcore is made of unicorn mane,” the girl muttered half to Wendy, half to herself. “I suppose no unicorn had to suffer for that. But imagine the dragon heartstring cores… that's just brutal!” Trudy stamped her foot to express just how disgusting she found this. “Wands with cores like that should be forbidden,” she said, frowning now.

Nodding eagerly as Wendy spoke of seeing a jackalope would be a symbol of good luck, Trudy's expression turned into a warm smile again. “Oh yes! Absolutely,” she agreed happily. It would be the greatest thing to see a jackalope. In fact, it would probably be the highlight of her camp stay and that meant something. The girl walked with a bounce now and wondered if a jackalope would let them get close enough so they could take a better look. However, she assumed if they saw one at all it would be from afar.

“Oh!” Trudy squeaked excitedly as Wendy mentioned writing their own adventure story. “That is the most amazing idea ever!” she exclaimed. “We just have to do that.” The girl's imagination always ran wild but she rarely found the time and inner calmness to actually write anything down. She was more of a story teller than a writer anyway.

“Yes!” the girl said, her voice clearly revealing how proud she was of her grandmother. “She's a stage actress. You should visit me in Windsor at some point when she's in a play. Well, she has also played in theatres in London occasionally but that was when she was younger. Now she is more on local stages but she's brilliant and she can play any role, really.”

Wendy wondered if there were people in the Ministry that took care of the rights of magical creatures too but decided to ask Danny about it when they met up again. Now, that seemed something that the bookish girl could get into, but then again, if it meant having to constantly argue with people that were against any safety measures she proposed, it might prove to be more difficult than she originally imagined.

“Mine is, too,” she said with a smile, glad that at least her wand was reflective of the ideas she had just discussed with Trudy. Though Wendy had no desire to go into the details of how dragon heartstring cores were sources, the girl’s overactive imagination taking her somewhere she had no business going, she promised herself to be more conscientious about these things when she went back home. It made her miss the farm animals dearly.

Thankfully, Wendy did not have to stay on that thought for too long as they moved on to more pleasant topics like the thought of encountering one of those beautiful creatures on their adventure, or better yet, writing about it. “We should! Benny and I co-write stories sometimes which is really fun, we normally do fantasy things but I think it will be fun to do stories with magical creatures, I love them all so much,” she said enthusiastically.

Wendy listened closely to Trudy as she explained about her grandmother’s profession, intrigued by the idea of a stage play. She had gone to a couple when she was younger, it was one of the many reasons she loved storytelling so much but she had never met someone who actually knew someone that acted on stage. That was even more reason for Wendy to get excited, “I would love to!” she said, wondering if her parents would let her go but figuring they would. Normally Wendy didn’t invite others to her own home since living on a farm wasn’t normally other people’s idea of a good time but if she ever did, she’d probably invite Trudy over. She seemed like an animal lover just like her. Wendy was sure that her parents would like her a lot, too.

“That’s brilliant, really, I love writing stories but acting them out must be such a good time,” she offered, readjusting her backpack on her shoulders as she continued to walk. “Are your parents into acting as well?”

“That must be a relief,” Trudy said, nodding. “I mean, just imagine how it would feel to know that a creature had to give its life for the core of your wand. I wouldn’t want to use that wand at all, I think.” The girl chewed on her lip having said that, wondering if she would not try to dismiss any thought on how cruel the wand core had been obtained for the sake of wielding her wand just like others did.

“Oh, you do?!?” Trudy said excitedly, her eyes widening in awe. “That’s so amazing! Can I read some of those at some point?” She paused briefly before adding, “Or would you rather not show them?” She looked hopeful but she’d get over her disappointment soon should Wendy not want to let her read the stories.

“We should totally write an adventure story which involves magical creatures,” she said, smiling widely again. “I’d love that so much.”

Trudy beamed at her friend when Wendy said that she’d love to visit her and see her grandmother on stage. She could not hide the fact that her grandmother was the person who influenced her most and she was proud to let her friends see how amazing the woman was. She might be a muggle but in Trudy’s opinion she was more admirable than any witch or wizard.

“I’ll write to my mother about it. I’m sure she’d be fine with having you stay either towards the end of these summer holidays or next year. In fact, she asked me if I wanted to invite friends over at some point. So, she’ll certainly say yes. Consider yourself officially invited. I hope your parents don’t object to this either!” Trudy was speaking quickly now, almost without really thinking about it. The words just spilled out of her mouth and she giggled when she realised this herself.

“I agree!” Trudy said enthusiastically as Wendy said that acting stories out would be great fun. “And nope, my parents aren’t into acting at all. My mother is a magizoologist and my dad works for the Ministry. Your parents are farmers, right?” Trudy remembered that Wendy had mentioned that before but she felt the need to ask again anyway.

“You’re welcome to read them,” Wendy said enthusiastically, not the type to readily share her writing but figuring that if Trudy was asking, maybe she was actually interested. “It isn’t very good, though, but I’ve tried my best,” she added as an afterthought, not wanting to sell what she believed to be some of her best writing for too high a prize. The girl had worked hard on her stories but wasn’t sure if her best was considered good by anyone else’s standards. If she ever wanted to write professionally, however, she knew that she’d have to get over her fear of showing her work to others.

Co-writing with Benny had really helped her come out of her shell a little when it came to overcoming her fears, so it only seemed like showing Trudy was a step in the right direction. “But if you’re interested I’d love to do that, I brought some parchment along, if we see something interesting, we can take notes and use it later,” she offered, though she couldn’t quite remember if she had packed her self-inking quill or not, she hoped she hadn’t forgotten, especially now that Trudy seemed on board with the idea.

But if not, their adventure into the forest, the girl figured that an adventure about the fun they would have at the theater watching her grandmother would be a good second choice. Wendy naturally would want to add something magical to the entire thing, fantastical quests and magical creatures were the sort of plot points she thrived on, after all. Though Wendy also figured that she would not have to look too far, depending on what sort of theatrical productions her grandmother was into. “Yes, please do! I don’t think my mum will mind, she’ll probably want to talk to your mum first to make sure it’s okay,” she said, feeling a little embarrassed that her mum was that sort of person but she’d sort of grown used to it by now. It seemed just one of those things that came with her age.

“A magizoologist! That’s amazing, wow, Trudy, you’ve got such interesting people in your family,” she said. It was the first time she had ever (sort of) met someone that knew a magizoologist directly though she had read plenty of books by them. The Ministry job was good too, but it was a stage actress and magizoologist was a difficult act to follow. “They run a tavern type thing though occasionally it’s also a bed and breakfast, but for the most part, they’re farmers too,” she nodded. It wasn’t nearly as interesting as what Trudy had said about her own family but there was no need to deny where she had come from, at this point will all the Willbonds that had gone through Hogwarts, it seemed common knowledge.

Trudy beamed at her friend when Wendy, quite enthusiastically agreed that she would let her read her stories. “Oh, that’s so great!” she exclaimed, considering herself very lucky that the fellow Ravenclaw would share something so special with her. “Thank you,” she added. “And I’m sure it’s much better than you think!”

Wendy seemed to be pretty organised when it came to her writing ambitions, having even brought parchment along for their hike. Trudy clearly admired that. She had not thought of such a thing herself but then again, Trudy’s stories just flooded out so quickly that the girl had so far been unable to write any of them down. She rather just slipped into the role of a narrator and told whoever was present what she had on mind or she slipped into a role immediately, trying to play out whatever she was imagining.

“Sounds like a plan,” the girl nodded eagerly anyway, thinking that a different approach never really hurt. Besides co-writing a story sounded like an adventure in itself. In fact, for the twelve year old girl every day of the past year had been quite an adventure. There had always been new things to discover at Hogwarts and now at the summer camp. Everything was exciting, new and absolutely amazing.

Trudy was overjoyed to hear that Wendy really wanted to come and visit her and see her grandmother on stage. She bounced in her step and grinned widely at her friend. “She can owl my mother, meet with her to talk, whatever is needed to convince her.” Trudy said eagerly. “My mother would like that, too, I think. Who knows, maybe they’ll get friends too,” the girl added in an afterthought. That would be rather cool or so Trudy thought at least.

She felt quite proud that Wendy thought that there were interesting people in her family. The little Ravenclaw adored her grandmother more than any other person in the world but also loved her mother dearly and thought that she was a pretty cool parent. Her father did not usually get much praise from her, though.

“That’s sweet of you to say. I’m sure you’ll love them. They’re really great,” Trudy said, smiling fondly. “Your family does sound cool too, though. I think their work sounds very interesting, too. You certainly get to meet many different people there, don’t you? That must be inspiring as well.”

By now the camp was only barely visible behind them and they marched into the forest. As soon as the sun was shielded by trees it got remarkably cooler but not unpleasantly so. Trudy looked up and smiled. “I love it so much how in forests you have these different levels of flora and fauna,” she said, her cheeks reddening slightly. “There’s so much to discover and observe - on the ground and in the trees.”
