“Sure, yeah,†he said, responding to her smile with a half-smile of his own, though a touch belatedly. He wondered if she’d hug him or – given her upbringing – shake his hand or some shit. He was glad when she only waved. He nodded back, not really sure why she was thanking him but not lingering on that question as she turned around.
He stood there for a moment, waiting until she’d disappeared into the crowd enough that he was sure she’d gone. Kai breathed a literal sigh of relief, feeling all kinds of tension exit his body. Who could he talk to about this? There had been a while where he’d not thought of much else aside from finding this side of his family, but after he’d abandoned it he’d done his best to let go of all of that shit. Did he even want to talk about it? He wasn’t sure.
Turning back to the glass doors behind him, he gathered himself a little, running a hand back through his hair. He wanted something stronger than nicotine and caffeine coursing through him. just something to take off the edge. He’d settle for a drink, even. Kai glanced at the clock as he returned to his desk, knowing he’d spend the next couple of hours counting down until he could leave. He was going out tonight.
