At first the blonde hadn't even noted the faint rumbling of voices beyond the door she was sat at. They had been so faint that the Slytherin initially thought it was simply wind escaping through the gap. It was only upon hearing Ben's assured and resolute 'yes', that Orlaith paused her disquieted thoughts to look up from her hands and consider what she was overhearing. Was that-- it wasn't. It couldn't be. Orlaith didn't know if she was amused or mortified, because the Slytherin certainly hadn't stopped and considered the volume of her voice when she had been in the tower discussing various things with Ben. Did that mean his father had heard what they had discussed also? 'Oh Godric!' she internally squealed in horror.

Then the thought crossed her mind that she ought not to eavesdrop on their conversation. She ought to take her behind back to the main party as she were told before, and mingle and wait. This was a highly vulnerable position to be in. Ben and his father could easily catch her, there weren't as many places to hide in this hallway as there were in the hallways of Hogwarts. If they didn't catch her, then she could easily have been spotted by absolutely anyone from the party, because to listen properly, Orlaith could tell she was going to have to position herself and focus in such a way that all noise and movement anywhere else was blocked out. It was an extremely vulnerable, compromising, position to be in, and yet...

'They always wind up wanting things I can't give them.'

Orlaith froze. That-- that was Ben's voice, wasn't it? Was... was he discussing... girls? Was he discussing her? Was he basically admitting that he was Orion, as Orlaith had suspected earlier?

Well... she supposed she could listen a while longer.

The lithe sixteen-year-old pressed her ear against the wood of the door, straining her hardest to hear every word as clearly as she could, but unfortunately the only words she could ascertain from Ben next was 'ruin anything'. Her eyes trailed downwards, eyeing the gap between the door and the floor. Was this what her feelings for Ben had reduced her to? Was she seriously considering putting her face on the floor so that her ear could hear better a private conversation between father and son? All in the name of knowing what was going on in Ben's head? It was kind of his fault for being so complex she couldn't figure him out...

Being mindful of her shawl and bag so that they didn't make any noises that would alert the two Danvers' men to her presence, the blonde rested her face against her purse and carefully pushed her ear as close as she could to the door. It was much better, every word was coming through crystal clear now. And.. Salazar's shiny slippers... what words they were! Had Ben's father just said? Was he saying... Ben liked her? No, no, that couldn't be right. Leo Danvers hadn't said her name -- but then Ben's father continued, and what he said next made it clear as day that they were in fact discussing her. He'd described the scene he'd just walked in on and said her family name. Wait, had he just instructed Ben to introduce her to his mother?

Just like that, Orlaith was getting a head rush. She sat up, rubbing her temple. It was a lot of feelings and a lot of thinking that swirled around inside the young Dewar in that moment. She was pretty sure she'd had enough parents that evening, she wasn't even sure she wanted to deal with her own once she got home. Perhaps she was mishearing things, perhaps her position had caused all the blood to rush to her head and turn her crazy. "Merlin..." she sighed, falling limp against the wall again. Did Ben really like her?

If there was one thing that went unspoken between the Danvers men it was Ben's ... extracurricular activities. He wasn't someone who kissed and told, no matter how much success he had with the fairer sex. He admitted he got lucky quite often when it came to girls but that wasn't something he felt like discussing with his father. Ever. They'd only have one such conversation, when he turned fourteen and had started dating Whitten, and he did not envy Baylen that pending conversation at all. Outside of that he'd frequently caught his fathers exasperated amusement when he... went out with a girl. He didn't like to draw attention to that part of his life and tended to compartmentalize it. He was a gentlemen up until the point that they didn't want a gentleman anymore and he was pretty good at reading the lines.

He was also good at not pushing, no matter how much he wanted something. That, he knew, was important and something his father had stressed early on.

Being serious about wanting something, though, was a conversation he tended to have with his father. Ironically it was only the once and it was about Issie. But Issie was his best friend and therefore he'd sworn he'd never cross that line with her. Told his father that, in fact. He admitted he loved her, of course, she was too good for words sometimes. Loyal and sweet. He'd put up a wall to protect them both, at the time, and he was frustrated with himself at letting it fall with Orlaith. Ben knew himself, like his father understood him. What went unspoken between them but very known was that Danvers men tended to keep precious things. Or, well, want to keep them. Once the attachment grew past a certain point they took things rather serious. "She is." he confirmed, smilling slightly.

He wasn't sure he was ready for that but it was what he wanted. It made him nauseous and anxious but also like... it was difficult to explain but he felt like he was on the verge of something. Part of him was done denying it, at least outwardly. Orlaith was beautiful and lovely and he wanted, almost to the point where he'd give her anything at all that she wanted. He wasn't sure if he was ready to let a girl be that to him, quite yet. That power, in the hand of a Slytherin, could be for good or ill. The only comfort that he had was that, he suspected, he could be the same for her. Maybe. If he just manned up and just ... pursued this properly. "How did you know?" he asked quietly in lieu of confirming he'd introduce her to his mother, gaze flickering towards his fathers face.

How did you know. He supposed Benji could still surprise his father. "That's a complicated question. Are you sure you're ready to hear the answer?" he questioned, appraising. In point of fact the answer was quite simple when you compared it to the question being asked. The complication portion stemmed from how simple the response would be, of course. What Benji was contemplating now, however, was quite a bit more serious than he'd initially thought. He wasn't surprised he was capable of it but, rather, he'd assumed it would be Issie they'd be talking about. They'd been childhood friends and the families were quite close so he'd held out a secret hope that maybe someday they'd join business and family, officially.

Not to say he was opposed to Orlaith so much as that he hadn't thought a girl could get under the walls surrounding Benji's heart. But then she looked to be just his type wasn't she? Sweet and beautiful - two things Benji had never been able to resist.

Kneeling in the corridor of Ben’s house, Orlaith debated whether or not she should get up and move onward to the party as she had been asked to do. It became especially more difficult to decide as she heard the voices of both Danver’s men stirring from behind the door again. Part of her was just feeling immensely guilty for eavesdropping on such a private conversation, but another part of her wasn’t feeling especially keen on rejoining a party where the only person she really knew was Ben. However, he seemed quite keen for her to get to know the family, if his insistence on bringing his younger brother to the Winter Wonderland festival was anything to go by.

As such the blonde considered what she would have preferred Ben do had the situation been reversed. There was still every chance that she would be caught at the door, and so the sixth year had to consider what that would potentially do to her chances of anything serious with her housemate, especially if he did have feelings for her, as the conversation had suggested thus far. She would have preferred he didn’t eavesdrop, which meant the decision was made. Orlaith wouldn’t eavesdrop any further, and do her best to forget the little that she had heard thus far until Ben was ready to tell her about it.

Again, being careful of her shawl and making any noise as she stood, the Slytherin got to her feet and headed down the hallway in search of the party and the rest of the attendees. Unsure of how long the conversation between Ben and his father would take, the blonde made an effort to seek out Ben’s younger brother for company. Given Ben’s interest in her meeting Baylen, it made sense to make an independent effort to get to know the younger sibling.

Baylen was left to wonder where his dad and Benji had headed off to. He resisted the urge to swat his mothers hands away as she fussed and prayed that she would realize he was too old for it. Benji had always had a lot more patience than he did and if he didn't worship the ground his older brother walked upon he'd be quite jealous that he seemed to be so bloody perfect. He withstood their mothers hovering with the perseverance not often seen and it always made him chafe internally and just sort of... will himself to just bare it with quiet dignity and grace.

And then make a break for it as soon as his mother was distracted.

With a sigh of relief the Ravenclaw took to the stairs, ruffling his hair away from the odious grooming his mother favored, and taking the flights two at a time in an effort to put some distance there. Women were strange creatures. He didn't understand the appeal, truly. Not if they were anything like his mother, anyway. He briefly wondered if they all sort of just... underwent some kind of medical enchantment after a certain age in order to be that obnoxious. His manners would never allow him to utter those words out-loud but he'd seen many a strange Ravenclaw girl already and figured maybe it was just there since infancy.

As he rounded the corner to his brothers tower, however, he was met with an interesting sight. "Are you lost?" the Ravenclaw asked curiously, his head cocked to the side, as he studied his brothers housemate. She was pretty, he thought, hesitantly retracting his previous internal commentary on girls. Very pretty. "My brothers ditches me for you, sometimes." he added sincerely, blue eyes appraising. It would be sort of funny, how many of his expressions mirrored his older brothers and, by default, his father. But the Danvers boys spent a great deal of time around the men in their family, frequently out in the vineyards, if they weren't in lessons. "You're Orlaith." he added, though he didn't need to. He almost blurted out that he knew his brother fancied her but that would be...he didn't think Benji would appreciate that.

But really Benji wouldn't favor her with his time if he didn't. He'd been a bit jealous about it at first, considering he'd always been used to not really having to share his brother, but had accepted it eventually. If Benji liked her she couldn't be bad, right?
