Honoré was aware of the professor approaching them but for some reason he didn’t care. He wanted to cling to this silly mood but he could feel it fade with every second that passed. Professeur Malinat had overheard their conversation and was looking at them with a stare that could as well be interpreted as a warning. Honoré held his gaze and his expression remained unperturbed.

Julien seemed to focus on Giselle now which was cool with Honoré. He liked to get a moment with Lijsbeth.

“Fifteen minutes to finish this…” he chuckled but the former lightness was gone. “I guess we should better focus on that then. The poking will commence afterwards.” He was joking but his voice sounded tired. Honoré sighed. Why did a good mood never last long? Why did he always feel like a weight was suddenly put onto his shoulders?

“So, how far did you get with the quiz before you interrupted our little dare?” he asked Lijsbeth. He hadn’t answered many questions yet but he looked at his parchment now and jotted down a few answers. Most questions weren’t too hard for upperclassmen. Just a few made him really think.

Giselle's mind wandered back, back to their vineyards and the stalls with horses, and the smell of fresh hay... Until Professor Malinat spoke and brought her back to class. Fifteen minutes? The corners of her mouth twisted in displeasure. Barely half the questions on her quiz were answered, and she was losing interest in the lesson, fast. She was never going to use any of this information after she graduated, so why had she listened to her mother and decided to not drop the class after all? Because she wanted to be the perfect daughter, that's why.

It was no secret that Giselle thought she was better than everyone else in her year. She carried herself with a definite grace and dignity (according to her, anyway), and she had given a small, disapproving sniff at her fellow sixth years who were embarrassing themselves by attempting to play with the kappa tank. There was no way she was going to work with them, not to mention the aura the happy couple was exuding, as if nothing could break them apart. Disgraceful.

Instead, she turned her attention to Julien. She would never admit it, but she always thought she should have been sorted into Papillonlisse as well, and she had a soft spot for a lot of them. And she definitely didn't miss the way Julien waved at her, so she smiled back, and crooked her finger at him, indicating for him to come closer. If there was any way she could get help then she was definitely not doing this stupid quiz on her own.

Julien flinched when Professeur Malinat’s voice cut smoothly into the exchange. The Papillonlisse Mousquetaire turned slowly to face the older man; he really did not like being in hot water with any authority figure. And the piercing look that the three of them were getting was unnerving.
“Yes, sir,” he replied, bobbing his head. In fairness he had rebuffed Honoré’s suggestion, however jocular…

He breathed a sigh of relief when the professeur moved on, which evolved into a sigh of exasperation when the older wizard announced there were only fifteen minutes remaining. Hurriedly, he skimmed through his quiz and jotted down a few more answers over the course of the next several minutes – if only to have something. Belatedly, he turned his attention back to Giselle just in time to see her smile and crook her finger at him.

Shifting his weight slightly, his gaze darted over to Honoré and Lijsbeth: who were both still very much distracted.
“I’ll, er, be back,” he mumbled to the pair, more to be polite than anything else – though he was almost certain neither one had heard him. Honoré seemed to have tunnel-vision when Lijsbeth was around, though Julien supposed he could hardly blame him. He liked Lijsbeth, in any case.

“Er, hi,” he greeted as he approached the blonde, holding the parchment with two hands for want of something to do with them. “Had a good summer?” He hadn’t seen her yet this term, and – being the awkward creature that he sometimes was – he’d come to find that this was his best bet at safe small-talk.

Dino frowned thoughtfully. "They're only insects..." he said, but even as he spoke he realised he'd said the wrong thing. The girl - Mathilde - was frowning and he remembered belatedly that she had been responsible for those funny posters about responsible and animal-friendly potion ingredients. He wanted to backtrack, but couldn't quite figure out how to without sounding stupid. Then he realised there was something else he could say, and that would make him sound stupid too, but at least stupid was better than cruel. "I mean...once they're dead they aren't going to have any other use for their stings, are they?" Would she buy it? He finished the drawing and glanced up as Prof Malinat said there were only fifteen minutes left.

Already? Well, at least it meant he wasn't going to look like an idiot for too much longer. he scanned down for another question. "Would the augurey, the jobberknoll or the phoenix make the best pet for a young witch or wizard?" he read, and frowned. Phoenixes were reputed to take care of themselves, so they would be easy to look after, but they were so rare...Dino didn't even know anyone who'd seen one. The augurey...wasn't that the bird that cried when it rained? It would probably be a good pet to have in the desert, but not here, which left...

"You know, I think this is a trick question. Some creatures shouldn't be pets at all" he said,  which might just have unwittingly been the right thing to say to a fledgling animal rights activist.

"Time's up!" Gaston said in a cheerful tone, or at least what passed for a cheerful tone in his case "Please add your name to your quiz if you haven't done so already, any sheets without a name will not get marked...". He was amused to see a couple of second years actually jump in surprise and gasp as he spoke as they frantically tried to finish off an answer. Nonetheless, he gave the students a few moments to finish writing before he raised his wand and summoned the parchments. There were several surprised faces; clearly the students had expected to be handing in their own work.

He glanced through a couple of quizzes at random; the first, clearly by an upperclassman, had almost all the questions attempted and was completely neatly, the next had a lot of gaps but as he didn't recognise the name, presumably the writer was a first year. "Class is over for the day" he said, raising his eyes from the stack of papers and attempting a brittle smile "please don't put your fingers into the knarl cage unless you want a visit to the hospital wing... and be sure to leave in an orderly fashion so as not to upset the creatures..." he looked back down at the papers, the students already mentally dismissed, and resumed flicking through them, nodding and frowning in roughly equal measure.

Students began to filter away, some singly and others in small groups. "Next week we shall be studying several of these creatures in more detail. If you wish to read chapter three of your textbook in preparation, you will earn youselves extra credit" he said, almost as an afterthought.

"Do you believe they only take the stings from the billywigs when they're already dead?" Mathilde asked. Trudy said that magical creatures were killed for potion ingredients and wand cores. Mathilde wasn't quite so sure. It made sense to use dead creatures but then again she had never found a dead magical insect so how would potioneers get so lucky? Besides, she had heard that certain farm animals were solely bred to be killed and eaten later. The girl shuddered. Human beings were so cruel.

Dino read out the next question on the quiz and shared his thoughts. The girl nodded along, grateful that he gave an answer that she liked herself. "I agree with you!" Mathilde said eagerly, but then hesitated, wondering if that was really what professeur Malinat wanted to read. "I think we should write that none of these is an ideal pet, but I guess out of that lot the jobberknoll might be a reasonable choice? It's not dangerous, it eats... insects, I think?" The girl shrugged.

Before she could finish her quiz, professeur Malinat announced the end of the lesson and she quickly glanced down at her parchment, trying to scribble down at least a few notes to finish the quiz somehow. She was just about to make one last addition when her parchment left the book on which she had put it to write and flew towards their teacher.

"Thanks for working with me," Mathilde said to Dino. She then packed her things and walked back to the building. "Thanks for this interesting lesson. Bye," Mathilde said to the professor as she passed him.

Time was up. Honoré shrugged. He had written something in response to every question of the quiz, though some answers were pretty rushed and not as insightful as they should have been but the mousquetaire still thought that it would earn him a sufficiently satisfying grade.

His parchment fluttered towards professeur Malinat and he looked at Lijsbeth with a small smile. “So,” he began, “don’t you have a free period now, too?” He looked at her, hoping she’d not only confirm that he was right about the free period but that she’d also answer the unspoken question if she wanted to hang out.

He grabbed his things and looked at Lijsbeth, waiting for her to be ready to leave as well. Then he walked past professeur Malinat, smiling cordially at him.

“Au revoir et à la prochaine. ”

"Time's up!"

“Oh, no,” he whispered, glancing down at his mostly-finished quiz. How was that fifteen minutes, already?! Frantically he tried to scribble in a few more half-brained responses – and then the parchment zipped neatly out of his hand, doubtless leaving a long vertical line of ink through to the bottom.

“Well, there’s that,” he sighed, watching the parchment slip away – equal parts disappointed by his likely quiz result as he was at missing out on an opportunity to talk to Giselle without a gaggle of either of their friend groups in the immediate vicinity. At least only the Grindylow in tank beside them would bear witness to his potential embarrassment…

He hesitated a moment then offered, almost shyly: “Walk you to your next lesson?” He had no idea what it was, but he supposed he was about to find out (maybe, if he was lucky).
Adjusting his bag on his shoulder, he slowly (in case she did actually want company) turned to head back to the palace.

"Not far enough!" Lijsbeth said sternly, but the wide grin on her face mostly negated her tone. It was fun to have the occasional class that didn't involve heavy textbooks and a vague and unsettling sense of anxiety. "As for the poking... you do know there might be first years listening, don't you?" She knew they weren't really saying anything inappropriate, but she wanted to tease back.

"Do you feel like a walk after class finishes then?" she suggested. Honoré was quite right, she did have a free period, and while there was an essay she really ought to finish, this would undoubtedly be more enjoyable... "You can tell me how you got every question correct..." she moved away a little, still smiling, as she continued to fill in her quiz. Actually, Lijsbeth had got a good way through, but she didn't like showing off even if this was one of her best subjects. She'd started with the more complex questions, got down some notes for most of those, then answered the really simple ones and was now working her way through the ones aimed at fourth or fifth year level.

By the time her parchment was summoned she was almost satisfied with her work.  She could have improved on a couple of answers, and there were two spaces she'd left entirely blank (she would look those up later) but at least the scroll didn't fly out from under a still frantically-scribbling quill.

"Where shall we go? Do you feel like walking by the river?" she suggested.

Dino shrugged. What else could he do? Animals got eaten every day, and he was sure they had a much better idea of what was happening to them that billywigs. He didn't think that was the right thing to say though, and even now he liked people to like him, so he was glad that the conversation moved on quickly.

"Yeah, I agree, and I think I'll mention that a non-magical bird like a canary would be an even better first pet for a child" he said, scribbling as he spoke and adding a quick sketch of both a jobberknoll and a canary so the similarity would be more obvious. He could have mentioned that the jobberknoll eating insects was really no different to using insect parts in potions - the insect ended up just as dead either way - but he was even more certain that would have been an inappropriate comment. Instead, he flipped over the page and added a diagram of a redcap, tilting his page so the girl could see what he was doing.

When his parchment was summoned, Dino felt reasonably satisfied with how the quiz had gone. "You're welcome. It was good." he said, and then offered a cheery "Bye, professor!' as he headed up to his charms class.

"Summer? Oh, yes I did. Thank you for asking," Giselle replied, keeping her voice low. She leaned closer to Julien and peered at his quiz surreptitiously, letting some of her perfectly brushed hair fall over her shoulder and on her chest. It hung like a pale gold curtain, the ends of it just brushing the back of his hand when she moved her head, but she pretended not to notice.

She was going to offer to compare answers — she was sure she remembered at least something from the textbook correctly — but Professor Malinat called time, and Giselle only had just enough time to dot her last 'i' before the parchment floated neatly into the professor's waiting hand.

Giselle mirrored some of the sighs she heard around her. There was not much more she could've done anyway, she supposed. She tidied up her writing utensils, brushed some invisible dust off her skirt, and gave Julien a soft smile that favoured her left profile when he asked if he could walk her to her next class.

"I'm sure you can, after all, I need some sort of distraction from the Métaphysique class I have next, which will no doubt be dreadfully tiresome like the last one. Tell me, are you..." Giselle's voiced was slowly drowned out by excitable chatter of younger students as they made their way back into the castle, becoming only a flash of blond that was vaguely recognisable in the crowd.
