I said it was the last time last time
Beauxbatons, near the Ombrelune Tower | October 2004

While, in reality, Séverin was technically out past curfew—did it really count if he was looking for the Mousquetaire? There was something fishy going on in the school, and Séverin had yet to determine what it really was. Even so, he was loath to leave his little brother alone to patrol the halls without him to stand guard. He would never admit the true purpose to Honoré, but Séverin worried about the younger Lune more now than he ever had in the before times. Honoré was close to the only thing that Séverin had left in this world, and he alternated a bit between resenting this and holding his brother suffocatingly close to his chest. They had a strange relationship, though, a bond that not many people shared. They were forged in fire and loss, and he felt justified in his complex emotions.

As much as Séverin liked the idea of art (he didn’t), he was taking the Arts initiative about as well as he could. The new Arts professor, his cousin, was talented enough in her art and she was moderately proficient in teaching it… but why not a sciences initiative? He would have loved that. Chemistry, biology, even physics. He loved that kind of thing. He loved science, despite a lot of it being primarily a muggle thing, and loved the scientific method. This was something he would be employing to look through the strange happenings on campus. Soon. For now, he was smoking a cigarette on the balcony near the Ombrelune Tower, and waiting for the rustle of the wind to blow the smoke in the direction of his brother. Séverin knew if he wanted to find Honoré, he only needed to do something the other might not like him doing. Of couse, he didn’t imagine he would get in trouble for it. In fact, he would be quite surprised to get a bit more than a reluctant chide.

He heard steps, and turned immediately. He recognized them by the other’s gait. He put the cigarette out on the cement flooring, and exhaled a little lingering smoke. “Took you long enough.” He said, a little sharper than he meant to. “I don’t like that they’re making you do double patrols, especially not this late. You should let me come with you.” It was more of a demand than a statement. “Someone could get hurt here in the dark, alone.” He humped, raising his eyes to his brother’s carefully. It might have been obvious that he worried, but of course it would not be Séverin-like to admit to it outright.

Being a Mousquetaire was no fun. Instead of seeing Lijsbeth or his brother, playing his guitar, doing homework or something fun (not that Honoré was an expert for fun things but still), he had to patrol the corridors before breakfast, after dinner and sometimes even later at night. Obviously there was something going on that worried Madame Maxime and the rest of the staff.

It wouldn’t be quite so bad to be on patrol if he could do this together with Lijsbeth but they had been assigned different parts of the castle and so Honoré barely saw his girlfriend aside from in classes. It made him feel irritable. He didn’t know what Lijsbeth was going to do after graduation but she would surely not be lingering around the school just to be close to him.

He was getting tired and his wand hand dropped lower and lower as he walked through the castle. It was dull and he barely found any students who had left their common rooms. Honestly, though, why would they sneak out anyway? With strange spiders in the grounds the common rooms were the best place for socialising. Unless, of course, one wanted to meet with someone from another house. He sighed, thinking of Lijsbeth again. Was she going through the corridors near the Bellefeuille tower now?

Suddenly he noticed a smell that he knew all too well. First it was just faint but as he came closer to a balcony, he could not only confirm his suspicion that it was the kind of cigarettes that Séverin smoked but also saw his brother.

“What? You were out here smoking to attract my attention?” Honoré teased. He hesitated briefly when Séverin asked to let him join him on his patrol and then nodded. “If anything you can keep me awake,” he said, stifling a yawn.

“What do you think is going on? These spiders are hybrids I’ve never seen before and they are venomous. Looks like just one of them could kill a Granian horse.” He shuddered at the thought. He had only seen a small spider of this species in the stables a week or so ago but was not too eager to meet one again.

Severin had not been smoking entirely to attract Honore’s attention, so as accurate as the statement was in spirit—Severin was still annoyed to hear the comment. It was more so a habit now, another addiction he had yet to challenge. He liked the calm feeling in his head when he smoked a cigarette now. It was quiet—for once—which was soothing. Still, he had intentionally been doing it out in the hallways near the entrance to Ombrelune, after hours, with intentions of luring his brother right there to him. Had it worked though, just like he assumed it would?

He shrugged. “Not everything it about you.” He managed, but his tone made it clear that Honore was right in his assumption, but Severin certainly couldn’t be anything but contrary, even if his life depended on it. To some degree, with the castle the way it was now, it almost did. He worried about the spiders, about the whispers and the danger surrounding the castle. One professor had been removed. It was unnerving, and more than just a little bit.

“I don’t know much about the spiders, honestly.” Severin answered, as much as it pained him. He took up a stride at pace with his brother. “I would love to pick at a dead one, though I don’t think we’ve managed to figure out what exactly is the correct thing to kill it.” He mused. “Some kind of acromantula hybrid… but with what?” He wondered. “or at least I’m assuming. Perhaps we should set a Parselmouth around the castle with their own Basilisk.” He teased, but he wondered if that would work. Surely a parselmouth could talk to a basilisk, but would the basilisk listen to them? Perhaps they would just eat them. “Spiders are terrified of Basilisks, and at least… the devil you know, right?”

He was still pondering how he might raise a baby basilisk, and how exactly to procure one. Wasn’t it a chicken’s egg hatched under a toad? Of course, he was not a parselmouth. Could that be a learned trait? Could he study basic commands? Would it be relevant?

“Of course, they could kill us all by simply looking… so maybe the spiders are better. I don’t know. And I don’t like not knowing.”

“Oh I know that,” Honoré said, stifling a yawn. He didn’t have such expectations or aspirations. Truth be told, Honoré felt best when he didn’t get too much attention. The only people he wanted to think about him were indeed Séverin, Mylène and Lijsbeth these days. He had some friends but they had their own lives and they weren’t very close anymore, not since his parents had died. He had retreated to some degree. He couldn’t bear the company of many people. Occasionally he’d pretend that everything was fine and socialise but, really, he was longing for some alone time with his guitar.

He felt a shiver run down his spine as Séverin shared his thoughts on the spiders. “Yeah, it’s some kind of hybrid. If it wasn’t lethal, I think I could see the beauty in it but as it is…” he shuddered and shook his head.

“Fight one dangerous creature with another?” Honoré asked amused, “let’s bring up the basilisk with its deathly stare and the venomous spiders run for it, leaving behind only their spider webs…” He exhaled loudly, “did I tell you about the first year girl that I had to free from a spider web she walked into? That was so scary. These webs are super sticky. I brought her to the hospital wing when I managed to cut her out of it. The threads were still glued to her clothes and skin.”

Thinking about Séverin’s statement on not liking not knowing, he nodded. He felt the same. Not knowing made him feel helpless and weak and he hated that feeling.

“I hope we’ll know more soon.” he said but there was little hope in his voice. “Do you think Madame Maxime will get some investigators to find out more or will she rely on the staff to help? I mean, some members of staff are competent enough but…” he shrugged. He didn’t have a lot of faith in the Beauxbatons staff to deal with the situation. After all, had they been able to do something about the spiders it would already have happened.
