the wine·red wyvern, merthyr tydfil | thursday 10 march 2005

"You can't be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline - it helps if you have some kind of football team, or some nuclear weapons, but in the very least you need a beer."
- Frank Zappa

They were only fifteen minutes into the grand opening but DJ could tell things were going well in the Wyvern. He caught @Cormac's eye all the way across the main room and gave him a telling wink; their gambit had clearly paid off, whether because of the Cymry branding or because one of the owners had been in Azkaban, or both. While they were co-owners, Cormac left the staffing and the working entirely to DJ, and he was pretty happy with his results. All of his leads were working tonight, but all of his employees (all seven of them counting himself) were there regardless. Steffan, his assistant manager and head bartender, was whipping out glasses left and right (the "free pint" vouchers given to the first 50 customers almost all already used), and the Felinfoel and Bardsey seemed to be the drinks of choice.

Skyla, his head cook, was on a similar roll, although even the simple fried and grilled dinners they offered took time, so she'd only sent out 30 or so meals, with all sixteen burners on all four ovens going. (DJ had no idea how Muggle line cooks managed without magic, although they probably had more employees.) Those meals on completion were dishing themselves up and levitating to the wait window, where Elijah (his floor lead) and Llew were returning with regularity after they seated customers and took their orders. He had two other floor employees although neither was officially on tonight's rota; Arawn was here and had said he didn't mind stepping in if it got too busy, but DJ's sole part-timer @Madelyn had already jumped right in to assist Elijah and Llew, and to be honest, he'd been grateful. He'd underestimated the crowd.

Next to DJ, looking as professional and stunning as ever, @Keela stood in solidarity. She'd been his rock over the last month and a half whipping this business dream into a reality - actually, she'd been his rock much longer than that, going back to September, heck, even going back to two Septembers before that. Hell, the August before that at the Wizengamot. It was not an exaggeration to say that he could not be standing here today without her by his side. And he had plans to show proper appreciation of that in the near future, but tonight it was all politics, business, and talking with what already felt like the entire Welsh population of wizards.

Except that wasn't true, yet, because more were waiting outside the door they were standing near, and DJ occasionally heard the *pop* of someone else Apparating into the alley (or impatiently Disapparating out of it because of the line). It wasn't so crowded as to be unbearable and DJ was pulling double-duty ensuring that since he was the Manager on the rota tonight, but he also knew he had to weigh the moods of his potential customers against the available space inside the public house. As well as screening guests for potential dangers, to himself or to the clientele. He suspected that @Harry would show up to the do the same, since they'd already had a few long talks about "targets on your back" and "announcing your business in the Prophet." DJ actually had been touched that Harry was still monitoring his situation with the Dark Widow and had wanted to ensure some extra "Aurory" layers of protection were on the Wyvern.

A pair of satisfied casual visitors wormed their way through the crowd to exit the building with a tip of the imaginary hat to DJ and Keela, and DJ thanked them before letting in the next little group of four. Then he leaned back to Keela and checked on her, "Are you handling all right in this crowd?"

Arawn took the Free Pint voucher he had been handed upon entry and turned it over in his hand to inspect it again as he shuffled further forward in the line—the line that was three people deep along the length of the bar—stepping into the gap created, ready to order next. He glanced over his shoulder, eyeing the young wizard he’d come here to ‘meet’ and his quidditch player girlfriend briefly before facing forward again.

A few minutes later he was standing on the other side of the pub, off to the side and silently grateful for how busy it was – all the better for him to blend in, learn what he could, and not be moored to a table and therefore restricted in his eavesdropping. Arawn sipped the beer he’d ‘bought’ with his voucher and scanned the room, smiling with his eyes at a witch that passed him holding a wine in each hand.

When he lowered his glass his focus fell upon a familiar face in the far corner, looking decidedly out of place. Arawn smirked to himself and began weaving his way through the crowd, doing his best to approach inconspicuously. He sidled up to the other wizard. “Afternoon Harry,” he greeted the younger man casually – though he had no right to. His eyes flicked to the drink in the Auror's hand and back up to the scene before them. “I take it you’re here on business, not pleasure?”

The grand opening had gotten off to a whirlwind start but, perhaps surprisingly, not in a way that felt chaotic.

To someone as inexperienced in the food service industry as Keela was, everything seemed to be running smoothly. None of the patrons looked disgruntled or annoyed (at least, that she could tell), and the staff seemed appropriately busy but not haggard or distressed.

She smiled and waved to an exiting pair as DJ shook their hands.

"Are you handling all right in this crowd?"

Keela snorted.
“The anxiety is crippling,” she replied dryly. This was tame compared to many of the press releases she’d had to do over the past few years. “Completely out of my element, y’know.”

She waited a beat, then added: “Seriously, though, I’m good. You good?” She bumped shoulders with him gently. Keela had the sense they’d both need some water soon, from all the talking; she was used to drinking an outrageous amount of the stuff (and electrolytes, of course) to keep up with all of her net losses in training.
“Need a drink?”

Ed had finished up with training early for the evening. There was a match coming up and he didn't want anyone off their form because he had overtrained them. It was a delicate balance finding the sweet spot, enough training to keep everyone sharp, but not enough to wear them down. After he had dismissed the team, he took a few minutes to jump in the shower and clean off. It wouldn’t do to head out for the first time in a while still smelling of the pitch. Buttoning up the navy blue shirt and throwing his jacket over top, Ed grabbed the ad the Prophet had run from his desk. Running a hand through his hair, the French manager picked up his wand and concentrated on the location listed on it. With a pop, he left his office behind and was standing at a corner across from a Muggle burger joint and a beauty shop, between which would be The Wine Red Wyvern, at least according to the ad.

It was a bit after their official opening, so Ed made his way into the alley and to the queue waiting for entry. Waiting rather impatiently, he finally made it in to the restaurant / bar and was pleasantly surprised. It was crowded but not overly so. There was a nice life to it. Having been a little late in getting here, most of the seating was taken up, but there was still enough space over by the bar that he could at least get himself a drink, spend a little time mingling, and see if he bumped into anyone he knew. Heading that way, the wizard noted Keela Doyle of the Falcons but continued on. She looked as though she had things on her mind.

Getting to the bar, Ed found there was a bit of a crowd waiting on drinks, as one might expect. Working his way to the front of the press, he ordered a Solstice. Paying the barkeep, the man headed off to a side. There was enough activity around that Ed didn’t feel he would be too noticed as he scanned the group. It had been a while since he had been out, even longer since he had been out alone. He was used to having someone on his arm, or being on someone’s arm depending on the circumstance. It was different having to find someone to engage in conversation rather than relying on the one you brough with you.

As he sipped his beer, he noted a few more familiar faces, but each was involved in conversations of their own. Not wanting to interrupt anyone, Ed was ready to abort, to finish his drink and call it a night when he bumped into someone and spilled what was left of his drink, barely missing covering himself in what had been a rather tasty beer. Looking over, flushed and checking if he had gotten any beer on them (If anybody wants to be the "them" just go for it, I can come back and change it to specified pronouns later), Ed apologized. “Terribly sorry about that. How embarrassing…I didn’t get any on you, did I?”

Harry had nothing in particular against public houses other than the ‘public’ part. He’d accepted it as a fact of life that he couldn’t get away with never going out in public, but he still avoided it, when he could. Most of the time, he went out only with the other Aurors after a successful operation or a bad letdown, or – less often – with friends from school. He probably should have brought somebody tonight, like his wife or one of his colleagues, as backup, but he had gotten paranoid lately about involving Ginny in Auror stuff, and he’d decided to make a showing at DJ Conway’s opening night all too suddenly to find a sitter. (The fact that Molly Weasley would have dropped everything to watch Jamie for the night, he was ignoring – Ginny wanted to rely only ‘sparingly’ on her mum for emergency childcare.)

He had seen DJ a few days ago in a short meeting (Harry was kept busy lately by myriad other things) that had amounted to, ‘Next time give us a heads-up if you’re going to make big announcements in the Prophet, so we have time to schedule somebody out here to watch that big target on your back,’ and he had also been given a voucher for a free beer – fortunately, since he had arrived long after the first fifty customers, and hadn’t really wanted to buy anything.

It occurred to him, waiting in line at the bar, that his objection to buying anything had been because he hated waiting in lines at the bar, and not because of the cost. The witches in line directly behind him were whispering to each other about was that really Harry Potter in line with them? as though he wouldn’t be able to hear them from eighteen inches away. He ground his teeth and ignored them until, finally, he could cash in his free (butter)beer and shake DJ’s hand.

If he had been here on ‘real’ Auror business, he would have done more to stay inconspicuous, but in his current capacity he felt more inclined to let people notice that he was here, to put on a show of solidarity between DJ Conway and the Aurors. (Between DJ Conway and himself, too, a little. He wasn’t sure yet that he liked DJ, for all that he saw himself in the younger wizard’s fierceness and drive. He’d wondered once or twice, since their first meeting, if DJ would have been inclined to go into the Aurors if they hadn’t gone after him as a teenager for a murder he hadn’t committed.)

Butterbeer acquired, he prowled the pub in one long circuit, drinking only enough of his beer that it wouldn’t spill on his hand whenever he moved, and then settled into a back corner, one hand in his jeans pocket, leaning up against the wall by the toilets, looking piercingly around, and doing his best to discourage people from approaching.

Afternoon, Harry. Harry glanced to the side. He didn’t recognise the older wizard, so he raised his eyebrows questioningly before he replied. “Afternoon.” The wizard seemed like he’d been commenting on Harry’s choice of drink, which admittedly did seem like something an Auror would get on the clock, though Harry had tried to pick the least buttery and most beery option on tap. “Just checking things out.” Who was this, and what did he want? He wasn’t somebody Harry recognised from the Ministry, but Harry doubted that he had come over to this corner to fawn over him. He took a sip of his drink before adding, “Have we met?”

wow, i wonder what it'd be like to have a difficult life?

Madelyn rushed to clock out of one job, only to turn around and head off to another. She stashed her apron in her locker, grabbed her small bag, and hustled toward the little lavatory in the stock room. Emerging minutes later, her hair down and curly, and dressed in black, Madelyn headed to the floo hearth. “See ya,” she told a coworker as the green flames enveloped her. Madelyn landed in a fireplace two blocks from High Street and walked briskly to the Wine-Red Wyvern. DJ had mentioned getting a fireplace installed when he got a floo permit, and Madelyn was looking forward to that.

She arrived just before the doors opened to the public, took a deep breath, and was immediately thankful she’d made it to the meeting before tonight. If things worked well, Madelyn hoped she could make this job a priority (and maybe work the other a bit less), but it was still too early to tell. The layout was new, the equipment was new, but the employees were seasoned and Madelyn among them. She knew what to do and didn’t have to be told. Steffan was behind the bar, so she fell in while working on the floor with her special brand of frazzled grace.

Reaching for a plate that was levitating itself to the counter too soon, Madelyn nearly dropped it, but recovered quickly. She delivered to a few tables, took some orders, and kept her ear out for when Steffan might need a break. She was a decent waitress, but behind the bar was where Mads shined. Heading to another table, she pulled out a little book of parchment. “What can I get for ya?” she asked gently, a warm, calm smile on her face despite the frizz already claiming her curls.

(let's shake things up a bit)

Keela's droll response was music to his ears, even though he was shaking yet another wizard's hand and welcome them to the pub with his eyes and smile while he listened to it. She was far more used to the limelight than him, for sure, and also for (until now) much better reasons. But it was her gentle elbow-jogging and reassurance, and inquiry about his own state of thirst, that made him realise he really did need a drink. "A drink would be lovely," he allowed.

He looked around - he knew right where Steffan was, but someone needed to take his place behind the bar before Steffan could take DJ's place at the door. Two of his backup bartenders were leads in other positions - Skyla and Elijah - and he didn't want to move them and lower the output from the kitchen onto the floor, but he knew he'd just seen Mads delivering to the tables in the "dining room" and the few taller tables here on the main pub floor. He caught sight of Harry in the "back" leaning against the wall between the kitchen door and the hallway to the restrooms. He was talking to an older gentleman that DJ himself didn't recognize, but Harry certainly knew loads more people than DJ did and obviously had even more fans than that.

"Can you hold the fort for a quick minute?" he asked Keela, as he finally caught sight of Mads headed to a freshly sat table just inside the dining area. He gave polite greetings to the pair of sweet old witches that were at the door right then, gently excused himself through the crowd, and made his way to Mads just asking for their order. He waited politely for a moment as they ordered, then gently tapped Mads on the shoulder. "I'll go put that order in, can you spell Steffan behind the bar for a while?" he asked her.

They made their way to the bar where DJ told Steffan, "Take over up front, yeah? Send Keela to the bar please," and then stepped into the kitchen and clipped Madelyn's parchment onto the happily bouncing ticketholder around the corner. When he stepped back out of the kitchen he glanced to his left to see if Mads was having any trouble behind the bar (unlikely), then glanced to his right to check on Harry and his conversation partner, before seeing if Keela had made it through the throng and up to the counter.

Keela figured he wouldn’t turn down a drink, after all the talking. She started to ask what he wanted at the exact same time that he asked if she’d hold down the fort for a minute, which she hadn’t expected; she’d planned to grab drinks for the pair of them. Maybe he needed a break as well.

“Yeah, ‘course,” she replied instead. She proceeded to welcome three smaller parties before Steffan arrived to take her place, directing her to the bar – behind which she spotted Madelyn’s increasingly-familiar brunette curls.

“Hey!” she greeted, hovering at the far end of the bar. She didn’t feel the need to sit down just yet, and in any case it was best to leave the seats open for the patrons. Not that she wasn’t one, considering she was about to buy a round of drinks… but it was only polite.

DJ had seen her by now, and was making his way over.
“Which d’you want?” she asked him, tilting her head at the on-tap selection. Her gaze flicked briefly to Mads, – she couldn’t remember what DJ’s policy was on the bartenders indulging while on-shift – then back to her boyfriend, then back to the other witch.
“Let me buy you a drink at some point, Mads?” Keela grinned. “You’re clearly earning your keep.”

Madelyn was a fine waitress so long as she understood her position within the system. Each restaurant had its own unique procedures, and it took time to establish a comfortable routine. Knowing which tables were assigned to her, the location of condiments, and her specific responsibilities allowed her to navigate through a shift with minimal mishaps. This was her first real shift at the Wyvern though, so Mads was slightly unsteady out on the floor. She hadn't yet memorized the table layout and had already bumped into three corners.

When DJ appeared by her side, Madelyn instinctively straightened up and flashed a brighter smile. Although she didn't have the greatest memory, she was competent enough, and that's why she relied on parchment and pen. She neatly wrote down the couple's order and turned to DJ as he began speaking to her. "Oright, sure thing," she responded, her smile widening at the thought of being behind the bar. Unlike waitressing, Madelyn felt instantly at ease whenever she worked behind a bar.

Handing off the order to her boss, Madelyn made her way to the bar where DJ informed Steffan about the new assignments. She quickly settled in, pouring butterbeers from the tap for eager customers looking to redeem their vouchers. Madelyn expertly released the nozzle at the perfect moment, creating just the right amount of foam on the surface of each mug. After serving a few customers, she moved down the bar to check on others.

At the far end of the bar, Keela joined her, and Madelyn greeted her with a friendly smile. From workplace gossip, Madelyn knew that Keela was a professional Quidditch player, which likely held significance for Anto. But to Madelyn, Keela was a kind witch who was clearly smitten with DJ. Madelyn had observed the way they looked at each other, even amidst their busy evening, and it naturally reminded her of her other best friend.

"Aye," Mads replied, chuckling lightly as her gaze shifted towards DJ. "It wouldn't be proper to refuse the offer, right boss?" Madelyn was always cautious about not drinking too much during her shifts, but there was an art to accepting drinks from customers. Nobody liked drinking alone, and joining customers in their celebrations or sorrows fostered a sense of camaraderie.

Just checking things out, Harry had said – a reasonably vague answer. Arawn smiled knowingly; Harry Potter didn’t owe him or anyone anything, and he would likely become even less cooperative when he discovered Arawn’s profession in due course – everyone at the Prophet knew Potter was suspicious at best and contemptuous at worst of journalists, thanks in no small part to one Rita Skeeter, whom Arawn had regrettably known as a Junior reporter and subsequently based Jonquil on to some degree (though of course, he at least aimed for some truth in her articles, unlike her inspiration who would happily take an idle opinion for veritable fact).

Arawn sipped his beer in the same moment Harry did, then turned and held out his hand to shake. “Arawn Fleming,” he introduced himself. “Daily Prophet,” he added, for transparency (he wasn’t about to assume Harry would know him from bylines). “But please don’t be concerned, I’m here for young Mr Conway.” He nodded in the direction of the bar, his light eyes finding the proprietor with ease. “He’s attracted quite a level of notoriety, something you no doubt have in common.” He smiled again, though it was ambiguous in nature.

“Does the Auror Office know you’re here or is this a personal visit?” Arawn asked conversationally; he was of course inquiring if the Department of Magical Law Enforcement was still interested in DJ Conway – and if so, he would want to find out if this was in the young landlord’s favour or not. “Or is Robards so busy managing multiple departments that detectives can come and go as they please?”

"Daily Prophet?" echoed Harry, with only faint suspicion -- though he immediately strained to remember if he had ever heard of Arawn Fleming in his life, to remember what Fleming's beat might be at the Prophet, he couldn't place the name. Harry paid distant attention to what Rita Skeeter was writing, and whether it was about him -- it was beyond him most of the time to pay attention to anybody else in the newsroom. He made a mental note to look up Fleming when he got to work the next day -- he didn't order the newspaper to his home, but he felt confident he could rustle one up at the Ministry. He set his butterbeer casually onto the table between them, in an effort to demonstrate openness he absolutely never felt where the press was involved, and held out one hand for a firm handshake.

So Fleming was here for DJ. "Ah," said Harry, following the older man's gaze across the crowded room. "Quite," he said. "He seems to like it just as little." His hand, on the table, moved back toward the base of his glass, wiped some condensation from the cold surface. His mind skipped forward and back, trying to decide what was the right thing to do in this case, whether to demonstrate Auror interest or personal interest or no interest at all. DJ was no longer a person of interest in the investigation of his father's murder, which surely Fleming knew -- Harry hadn't written the press release himself, but he'd reviewed it, he thought.

Still looking across the bar at DJ, Harry opened his mouth to answer, then shut it again, the mention of Robards suddenly raising alarm bells; he turned his head slightly to regard the reporter, looking him obviously up and down. Unlike Rita Skeeter, Fleming had no handbag to hide a Quick-Quotes Quill, but Harry wasn't naive enough to think that meant he was off-record. He said, curtly, "I'm not on duty now. Are my social calls --" he raised his eyebrows, unimpressed -- "a matter of journalistic interest, again? I hoped I'd left those days behind."
