@Andronicus Lovecraft (http://magical-hogwarts.com/index.php?action=profile;u=25537)

Benji wasn’t actually sure if what he had made was a good idea or not. It was, without a doubt, going to be painful. But also ... potentially a lot of fun. He’d had a good idea of what he had wanted to make when he had owl ordered a useless set of miniature dummies. They’d been imbued with runes that served as a built in hover charm.

He’d proceeded to cast an engorgement charm and quite a few hardening charms before he started getting into the spirit of things. He patted himself on the back for the final enchantment though. A nice hurling hex to finish off what was sure to be a perfectly painful quidditch practice.

He was equal parts excited and dreading coming out of this bruised as hell but he was pretty sure Andy would appreciate the amount of effort he’d gone through to give themselves a bit of a challenge before their next match. Sure they could go the old route and just slam bludgers at each other but... this was so much more interesting. And it gave them real, moving targets. And an extra layer of danger once he released the bludgers.

Running drills, practicing all day and night, and then scrimmaging some more was pretty much all that Andronicus thought about these days. In his last year as Captain of the Slytherin House team, he was deadset and determined to leave a lasting impression. Luckily enough, he had quite a few skilled players backing him up this term, and he was sure they would take the cup come June.

Heading out to meet Benjamin had become a bit of a routine in the last few weeks, and Andronicus looked forward to whatever the other wizard had planned today. The boy was a brilliant beater, but more than that, he was inspired enough to find new and exciting ways to push them to new heights. It was a skill the wizard greatly appreciated. Andronicus might have been the captain, but Benjamin was the creative heart and soul of the Slytherin House Team.

Andy was good at being a leader because he was thoughtful, he listened to the opinions of the group, and then he led them, but he knew enough to understand that just because he had the Captain's pin didn't mean he was the most important player on the team. Like a famous beater had once said: The team could be filled with the best, all-star players in the world, but if they couldn't figure out how to work together on the pitch, they wouldn't be worth a galleon.

When Andronicus reached the pitch, ridiculously well-maintained broom in hand, he was in awe at what he saw. Half expecting to see the typical equipment chest open in the sandy center of the pitch and not much else, he was surprised to see the little dummies in diamond formations. Half silver, half green, and clearly enchanted to do all sorts of exciting things. Playing as a beater meant  Andy was used to a bit of physical violence; things got dicey on the pitch all the time, but usually only during sanctioned games. Where Benjamin was concerned, though, Andronicus knew better than to assume anything.

"What have you cooked up today, Benjamin?" Andy asked with a bright, dimpled smile. He slid his goggles down from where they had been on top of his head, and his moused brown hair fell with them. The seventh-year collected his beater's bat, mounted his broom, and hovered above the sand as he waited for an explanation and for the game to begin.

"Something extra special." he said, grinning, before joining his captain up in the air. With a flick of his wand his sent two successive cushioning charms at his Captain's chest, before he cast two on himself. They'd be somewhat protected for however long the spells managed to last. No point in not getting a little extra protection. Their pads only did so much, after all. He figured this way they could both last longer. The extra safety precaution seemed smart at any rate. He'd cast quite a few charms on the dummies so he was fairly certain they were quite durable at this point and there was really no knowing how hard they'd slide back. Plus, you know, he wanted to be able to walk out of here.

"They'll pack a punch." he warned, nodding towards the dummies. "It'll take some strength to knock them down, for sure. I'll release the bludgers in a second, but I figured the one with no dummies left, looses. Green's yours, Captain. I'll defend silver." he said with a cheeky grin as he hovered on his broom. A flick of his wand sent the bludgers into the air, and another summoned his bat. With bat in hand, and his wand safely tucked away in his holster his floated over to the silver dummies. He did a quick check, admiring his handiwork, before he got his head in the game. Andy was good so he had to be strategic about this. And part of being strategic was knowing when to make the first move. Tricky part of this was that he didn't want to leave his dummies open for attack by veering to far in search of a bludger. Flip-side of that was that if he didn't, he'd be on the defense the whole time. And while he appreciated a good defense, he'd always go for the big hit first.

With that thought in mind, Benji took a dive. There was something to be said about the simple act of flying. It was exhilarating and something he would never get tired of for as long as he had breath left in his lungs. Soon as he spotted a bludger he took a hard swing at it, using the momentum to push him forward and around. Aiming towards the right was tricky but hopefully he'd take a crack at green dummy #4 .

Dummies are designated silver and green. Ben is silver and Andy is green. The goal is to protect as many of their own dummies as possible while taking down the opposing dummies. Once the dummy stops moving and the enchantments fall that means it’s down. First one with no dummies left looses. The danger lies in getting accidentally hit by a bludger yourself or getting rammed by one of your own dummies if you get too close. Each set are set up in a diamond formation with the fifth dummy in the center. Enough room to maneuver between but it’s close. Moves need to be labeled to determine which dummy is being targeted #1 starts the top of the diamond and it moves clockwise until the #5 in the center. Each dummy can take up to two hits worth 8 strength. So if you get a hit and roll a 2 you need at least one more successful hit with 6 strength for it to be out. In the event of a no hit on a dummy you can still hit each other with the last roll. Spectators are welcome after initial post!

1 d 2 determines successful hit on a dummy 2 being a successful hit
1 d 8 determines strength of hit if contact is made
1  6 determines successful hit on players if a 4 or 6 is rolled
In the event a 2, 4, and 6 is rolled you can play out a double hit (player and dummy with half strength) or a critical hit!

Something extra special. Translation: something potentially dangerous and incredibly inspiring. Andy smiled, chewing on the inside of his cheek anxiously, and waited for more instructions quietly. He loved these little scrimmages that Benjamin put together because they always pushed him to be better. Helped him use skills he might not otherwise work on. Nodding along as the other teenager explained the rules, the dummies, and the game's goal, Andy felt like he had a grasp on the concept. Enough that he was ready to play, and he'd figure out any nuances later. Protect the dummies, but don't forget to take shots, too; it made sense. And he could already see how this was going to help them both become better at playing Beater. It wasn't just about offense; defense was just as critical.

"Alright, I'm ready," He nodded, kicking off from the ground and hovering for a second. "Wanna put a galleon on it?" Because of course the Slytherin had to up the ante a little. Honing skills and potentially breaking ribs wasn't enough; the teenager had to make a bet out of it, too. As Benjamin headed off toward his set of dummies and then on the hunt for a bludger, Andronicus did the same. He did a circle around his figures, committing their positions to his memory, before looking for something he could swing on. Thankfully there were only two bludgers, not too much to keep track of, and the Dummies didn't try to outrun them, or at least, that he knew of.

Andy had been pursuing the other bludger when he heard the cracking sound of a bat making contact with a ball. He turned around sharply, racing to protect his dummy, and barely got there in time. Enough time to almost hit the bludger away, but it got past him and hit the fourth target with a little bit of force. Ricoshaying off of the dummy and smacking into Andy with what felt like ten times more force, the captain coughed and let out a howl of a laugh. "What kind of charms did you put on these things!?" He yelled across the field, following the bludger that had just hit him toward Benjamin's side of the pitch. Lining up a shot, Andy went for Dummy #1 and hit the bludger with everything he had.

"It wouldn't be fun if we didn't." came the tall Slytherins immediate reply. Part of him was exceptionally confident he'd win the galleon but, also, he was aware that his captain was a brilliant player. It depended on a quite a few factors, really. Ultimately he figured the added reward was an incentive that created something a little more tangible. Maybe he'd frame it or something and keep it as a memento of the time he'd beat Andy. That would be a nice way to gloat, wouldn't it? Not that he'd be too obnoxious about it. Andy was surprisingly easy-going, so he was fairly certain he'd be a good sport about the whole thing.

Bat met bludger in a solid impact, the sound setting his heart in a particularly quick pace, as he followed its trajectory. He could already tell it he hadn't managed to get the full force of his body behind it. It was well-aimed, though, so hopefully it would- ah. There was a level of satisfaction at hitting ones target. An even bigger grin made its way past his lips as he saw the bludger make its way past Andy hit and then rebound. Still, Andy was pretty quick wasn't he? He'd have to try to be quicker. "Quite few hardening charms!" he hollered back, grinning. He'd meant to make the dummies more durable but, ultimately, he'd ended up making this a little more dangerous than intended. Ah, well, it would help with reflexes, wouldn't it? If you could dodge a wrench then you could dodge a ball He hadn't anticipated quite how hard the bludgers would bounce back off the dummies. He eyed his silver ones for a second, wincing, when he realized getting hit by the dummies themselves would probably hurt quite a bit.

Well. Good thing he had bruise salve. Hopefully they didn't break anything too...vital.

Speaking of vital though he better pay attention! As soon as he heard the tell-tale thwack of bat meeting bludger Benjamin leaned forward on his broom. He flew back getting closer to dummy 1 and managed to clip the thing so that he successfully defended his dummy. Only with the tight angle the thing hit him instead. He could already feel the dull throb on his thigh and he mentally applauded Andy before diving right in and giving the aforementioned bludger a sound thwack. He needed to push his body into it!

(Green Dummy #4: 2 dmg; 6 left. Both boys got hit! Minimal pain.)

Having hit the bludger successfully back in Benjamin's direction, Andy let out a whoop of excitement, the beater's bat flailing enthusiastically in a circle around his head. This game was more fun than he had imagined it would be, even though parts of his body were already throbbing. Andronicus resigned to the fact that they'd probably both have to make a visit to the Hospital Wing after this and let out an adrenaline-filled laugh. Brown eyes watched closely as the bludger was knocked away from the dummy he'd targetted but managed to get its payment by colliding with Benjamin instead. "Ooh," Andy winced, knowing that had to hurt and then to lean into his broom to prepare himself to protect his dummies. Soon enough, he heard the telltale whack, and Andy gunned for the side of the dummies he thought was being targetted, his mind falling into some sense of rhythm. Andronicus had assumed that the next hit would be on the opposite side than the last like one might expect from a tennis match, but he had been inescapably wrong.

Realizing it a second too late, Andronicus wasn't able to cross back to the other side, and soon enough, Dummy #4 was down for the count. Andy watched in both amusement and disappointment as it sank dramatically to the ground. "Nice hit!" Andy announced, knowing he had to work that much harder now to win. And as much as he was a team player and wanted to have a good game, Andy couldn't fight back that part of his brain that had to be the winner. Being the Captain, and Slytherin on top, made for quite a potent combination of competitiveness. And not even newly enlightened, 'working-on-being-a-better-person' Andy could resist.

"I'll get you next time!" He called out, winding back and putting everything he had into his next shot. This time Andronicus had a lot more follow-through, the adrenaline and the idea of losing pushing him forward with explosive energy.

"Yes!" the tall Slytherin cheered, grin firmly in place, as he watched the dummy he'd been targeting take a dive towards the ground. There were few things as satisfying as a successful hit. Most of the time he didn't really focus on hurting anyone during Quidditch so much as making sure his team was well protected. In his mind that meant hurting the opposing team and while he didn't really aim to injure them too severely it was just a part of the game. He didn't gain enjoyment out of meteing out pain so much as the successful completion of a good play. The adrenaline always helped, of course. "Thanks!" he hollered back at his Captain. The older Slytherin had almost gotten there in time but hadn't been fast enough to figure out what his tactic was.

Ben had a tendency to thrive in terms of a competitive environment, and he could tell the turn was coming. He dove quickly managing to get to the dummy being targeted and barely clipping the bludger. "Merlin!" he hissed, as the bludger dragged across his forearm, but slid harmlessly away from the dummy. The angle hadn't been the best but it was hard not to put your body between a bludger and something solid. "I think you just like hitting me!" he yelled, laughing through a wheeze, as he shook his arm out in an effort to stave off any tenderness or encroaching stiffness. The game wasn't over, after-all. He was only ahead by a single dummy and he wasn't cocky enough to assume that put him too much ahead of Andy. Honestly he probably wouldn't feel safe until all of the green dummies littered the Quidditch pitch ground.

Without wasting momentum Ben pitched forward on his broom, gripping the handle tightly, before spiraling down in search of a bludger. He put as much speed as he could, exhilarated as the wind whipped his face, and continuing on once he'd spotted a bludger. His arm shot out as he swung his bat, teeth rattling a bit, wood and iron met in a firm thwack. The dummy to the right was going down.

Andy watched as Ben successfully managed to block the dummy from being hit only to catch the bludger in the arm and winced. "Sorry man!" He hollered as the wind picked up around them. As much as Andronicus loved the game, he never intentionally tried to hurt other players just for the sake of hurting them, but, like most things, Andy was just lucky. Even when he tried not to hurt his fellow teammate he ended up doing just that.

Hitting Ben more than he had the dummies Andy realized he'd have to change his tactics if he was going to win this thing. This was a lot different from a game of Quidditch, but Andy could be flexible. Thinking strategically, like it was a game of chess, Andy realized that the best course of action would be to target the dummies in a specific order. The ones furthest from the center had the least protection, so he'd go after those first.

After Benjamin took his next turn, that is, and Andy felt more prepared this time around than he had the last. He rushed the bludger as it approached the second dummy in his formation and swatted it away quickly. In that same swing, Andy managed to line up his next shot, add some oomph, and send it spiraling toward the silver dummy at the bottom.

Ben didn't even have enough time to actually feel much disappointment at the fact that Andy was able to successfully defend his dummy. No time because suddenly he was using that very same bludger to careen it towards one of his. With a shouted curse the tall Slytherin flew up, trying to accelerate to intercept, but did not get there in time. Instead he saw the impact of the bludger slam into the dummy in a solid hit. The dummy sailed down towards the pitch, useless, and he was close enough that the very same bludger rammed into his side.

He took a moment to center himself, cursing, when he realized his side was on fire. He gingerly ran his fingers across his ribs, relieved, when he didn't feel the tell-tale sign of something broken. He took a deep breath as a second check before he was satisfied that an immediate trip to the hospital wing was not needed. Guess the extra padding and the cushioning charm was going it job. "Bloody hell Andy!" the hollered, grinning a little despite the pain, and knowing instinctively that Andy would understand the words as the compliment it was meant as. If any hit like that during their next match, there was absolutely zero way that Slytherin would loose.

He wasn't out of the game yet, though. Steeling himself against the pain flaring against his side the Slytherin dove forward as he spotted another bludger. He took a wild swing, gritting his teeth, as he used the pain to fuel him forward. Nothing focused him so much or made him feel so present as the insistent accumulation of pain the longer games went on. Where flying made him feel weightless, injuries made him feel there, like he was in the middle of something. Like it was worth it, somehow.

Andy nearly fell from his broom as the bludger rocketed into him. It had been on a collision course that was unavoidable after smashing into G2 and nearly wiping it off the pitch. Barely holding on, Andy had to force himself to ignore the searing pain shooting up from his kidney as he clung to the broom. It knocked the wind out of him, and he knew it was going to bruise something awful, but at least he hadn't plummeted into the sand. That would have been interesting to explain to Madam Pomfrey. "Nice... shot..." The captain shouted between gasps of air and raspy coughs. It took a few minutes, but he got back his strength and was even more determined to take out another of Benjamin's dummies. The game was close, and if he could secure another hit, he would be that much closer to victory.

"I'll get ya' back for that, though!" He shouted across the pitch, a little bit of that Slytherin venom mixing with adrenaline and comradery. "Not to worry," Andy finished the thought to himself, eyeing the pitch and looking for the perfect spot to attack. The dummies moved slightly as they floated, but they didn't really move positions, making it easier to target. Benjamin was the variable, and Andy was getting better at anticipating that. Finding the bludger that had nearly lost him the game, Andronicus wound back and aimed for the center dummy.

Ben winced as he watched Andy take a bludger to the kidney. Bloody hell that looked like it hurt. "Thanks! Also, sorry!" it would not be a bad idea to at least get the both of them checked by Pomfrey at some point, if for no other reason to make sure they hadn't broken anything important.

"I don't doubt it." he muttered to himself, flying lower, and circling his dummies for a second. What he'd learned was that if you were too close the ricochet would definitely get you. The problem was that you had to get close in order to deal with the bludger. He could try to make as much space as he could but that meant not being close enough to defend. The choice was easy. In the face of a little pain Ben still preferred to win. It was why he made his broom jutter forward quickly despite the fact that the bludger was heading at a straight angle.

He felt his bat make solid impact with the bludger and, unfortunately, also felt the exact moment it glanced the wood. It ended up coming right back towards him, ramming him right on the shoulder. Merlin but taking an iron ball to any part of you was going to be painful. You really could not escape that no matter what you did. A string of expletives left his mouth as he rubbed his shoulder. At least he'd managed to protect another dummy. He refocused his attention on Andy, narrowing his eyes a bit, when he noticed the dummy he'd decimated was still up. Well, that wouldn't do would it?

Still feeling rough from the last hit, Andy hoped it didn't show too much. Half of being a Captain and a Beater was acting like nothing phased you, but that was a lot easier said than done when he felt like his side might explode. Maybe that was a dramatic thought, but it panged something awful, and he felt little sparks of pain shooting up his back. Deep breaths helped, but the game wasn't over, so nothing was going to help quite enough. One good thing from being hit as hard as he had been was the instant spike of adrenaline, and while Benjamin had been able to deflect the last bludger (at great personal peril), Andy had managed to block the return shot with some ease. Showing what skills he'd learned over the year, the Slytherin was able to identify where the bludger was headed and position himself in the perfect spot to block it.

And not only block it, but the energy coursing through his body also seemed to slow down time or speed up his mind, just enough to afford him the ability to line up a shot. Hitting it strongly, the pain rippled through his body as the bat made contact, and Andy winced as he followed through and aimed for that same center dummy once again. He was going to knock it out unless he got knocked out first, that is.

Bloody hell! The tall Slytherin groaned feeling both impressed and annoyed that his shots kept getting blocked. It felt like they just kept, well, defending too well? Which was good in the grand scheme of course since he felt like he’s keeping up with his captain rather well but it also left his bruised and achy. Not that he’d show that. It was important for him to push through, especially when playing against someone who he valued the opinion of.

With a single mindedness that was not surprising Ben sprang forward, swinging his bat harshly, even as he knew he’d been too slow to move out of the way. A successful block but the bludger still glanced his side. It knocked the wind out of him a little but it wasn’t too bad in comparison. It was still, essentially, an iron ball grazing his side though.

He took a deep panting breath before he dove down in an effort to shake off the pain and the cramping that was starting up. They’d been at this for a bit and were not closer to beating each other than they had been the last half hour. It said a lot about the kind of conditioning they had and he was rather proud they were so well matched. Their competition was going to bite the big one.

If only they could do this well during every single match—well, with slightly fewer injuries, anyway. Andronicus was quite proud of what they had achieved so far, even if they had managed to hit each other far more than their intended targets. The fact that both wizards were still upright and smiling said a lot about their personalities.

A common, and most likely Gryffindor-fueled, stereotype of the Slytherin house was that they tended to throw tantrums when things went sideways, but that was proved false here. Both boys had been targetted by the bludgers many times, and they were both still flying. And it was fun, despite the ache in his side that was near-constant now. Andronicus could only imagine the size of the bruise by the time they landed. Absently, he wondered if this one would resemble a continent like the one he'd worn proudly after the last Slytherin-Ravenclaw match.

"Nice hit Ben!" Andy called from across the pitch; despite the bludger hitting the other wizard in the process, it had been a solid block. Andy wondered if aiming for the center target was too easy to defend and decided to change his tactics. With a deep breath, he swooped in to block the next attack, getting the bludger out of his zone and then chasing after it to line up the next shot. Andy swung his bat in a wide arc that made it seem like he was going for one side but changed up at the very last second to target a different dummy. He hoped his deception would pay off.

They were going to be so bloody sore after this. He wondered if he could maneuver his broom through the castle so he didn't actually have to walk. Realistically he knew they should probably check themselves over after this, maybe stop by the Hospital wing anyway to be safe. He was high on adrenaline and most of the aches and pains were dulled but as soon as he landed he knew that wouldn't be the case anymore. Still he wasn't quite ready to stop yet. Victory hadn't been achieved and he wasn't one to leave things unfinished.

There were plenty misconceptions about the house snakes falsely perpetrated by the other three houses. He didn't blame them, necessarily, because truly some of it was warranted. He didn't appreciate some of the unflattering comparisons to notorious wizards that would remain unnamed but, well, truth was he didn't really let it deter him from his goals. He had good friends, a good family, a good life really. He could handle some idle gossip about him and his house. He didn't need to prove anything to anyone but himself. For Ben his main motivation for acting the way he did or taking action on something was purely because he wanted to.

Flying, practice, all of it he put himself through because he genuinely loved it. He knew instinctively that Andy felt the same. Which was what made it so much fun to spend time with him. They understood eachother on a level that was difficult to explain to other people. They could be different in everything else but in this they were the same. "Thanks, you too!" he called out, smiling wryly. If only he could have hit something that would have been grand. Also it would be bloody fantastic if he could not get slammed by another dummy. He was starting to get tender. At least Andy was having a similar issue so he didn't feel quite as bad. Still he really just wanted a dummy to go down.

The Slytherin jerked towards the left, taking a steep dive to refocus his thoughts, before pulling up and levelling out. It could be tricky to maneuver quickly and smoothly when holding a beaters bat, but he'd been trying to make it muscle memory for years now. It felt natural to dive, make sharp turns, and weave through the air with bat in one hand and broom handle in the other. His balance had always been good, helped along by his developing center of mass. He wasn't going to pretend that he wasn't looking forward to showing off for Orli.

Once he'd loosened his limbs a bit the tall wizard went back to actively scouting for a bludger, waiting, as Andy's came close. Since he'd put some distance from the dummies he'd been protecting he rocketed forward on his broom, letting the speed enhance his swing as he smacked the bludger as hard as he could. He impact sent tingles up his arm, and he gripped his bat harder, willing this one to knock one down completely. At this point he figured targeting a different dummy would result in a better outcome.

Andy felt as if they had been walloping on each other for the better part of an hour now, and every time the bludger smashed into one of them, he fell a little further toward the belief that the game was a bit rigged. If they had only been hitting him, he would have been suspicious, but Ben took just as much punishment. It wasn't that, but he did have to wonder if the bludgers were a little bit confused by the dummies. They were powered by magic, and they didn't have exact instructions, but they had spent who knew how many centuries being flung at students playing Quidditch, so maybe they had gotten into the habit. Either way, Andy knew they were going to pay for it later.

And he was paying for it again, right now, as another bludger slammed into him while he tried to block. It was almost as if it changed course at the last second, and instead of tracking the dummy, it veered to catch him in the shin. Andy was better than most of the students at Hogwarts, maybe not Ben, but Andy hadn't become Quidditch Captain for now reason. He should have been able to block a whole lot more of these, and his shots should have been better aimed, or maybe it was just his way of making up excuses.

Reasons for why things that generally worked weren't working now, and even as his mind scrambled for these excuses, he realized this was going to make them even better. Sure they were missing and taking hits, and it hurt like hell, but this was a whole other level of training, and it could only propel them forward. And that excited the Slytherin. Barely recovering from the last hit, before a bludger slammed into his shin, Andy tried his best to ignore the sharp pain shooting up his leg. That was going to be tight later. Instead, he focussed on sending that same bludger right back at his friend (and hopefully the dummy this time, because after all, he wasn't trying to kill his beater right before the match with Ravenclaw)

As soon as Ben saw the wind up he knew he wasn't going to be fast enough to stop it. What sort of player would be if he didn't at least try, though? Andy's bludger slammed roughly into the silver dummy just as Ben made it close enough where he got walloped with bludger himself as the dummy gave in to the strain. The magic holding it up kept it suspended for a split second before the dummy went careening into the dirt. He let out a pained groan as his ribs smarted something fierce before he forced himself to shake it off. The longer he stayed still the more it would hurt. He needed to keep flying and he needed to keep moving his arms.

He wasn't done yet, not by a long shot.

With gritted teeth the tall Slytherin made a quick, tight, loop around his remaining dummies. He rolled his shoulders in an attempt to get rid of the worst of the stiffness and he waited patiently before lining up his own shot. He refused to be left behind, the competitive streak in him surging forward, as his body lunged. He put the full force of his body behind the hit, focusing on his aim best he could, when you were hitting an iron ball that hard. The loud thwack was beyond satisfying and he hoped his aim was as good as the power he'd put behind that last swing.

Andy could imagine how Ben must have been feeling after that last hit as if he had been the target; his ribs ached sympathetically. If they kept up at this pace, it was doubtful they would end the night without a visit to the hospital wing. As seventh years there were a great many spells they could perform, and Andronicus had had enough practice with healing ones over the years of playing Quidditch, but it'd be a bit difficult to heal each other if they were barely holding on to consciousness. And the body could only handle so much. This was good training, though, if not a bit intense, so it wasn't as if Andy had any plans on quitting early.

He had managed to knock out one of Benjamin's dummies, and another was on its last wings, so he felt another surge of adrenaline as Ben sent the next bludger his way. The splitting sound of wood on metal echoed across the pitch, and from the sheer volume alone, Andy could tell it was going to be a tough one to block. The bludger zoomed toward his already weakened second-position dummy, and Andy rushed it. He managed to get his bat in between the bludger and the dummy, but the force of the shot was too much to be stopped, and it smashed into Andronicus' bat, sending vibrations that felt like they could break the bone rattling down his arm, and then knocked his dummy out of the game.

He blinked as the green mannequin fell to the floor, his arms aching, and switched his bat to the other hand as the bludger rounded the pitch. It wasn't his more muscular arm, but Andy had trained to be able to hit with both for moments precisely like this. The bludger had a lot of speed as it came back around, and Andy used the momentum to power his next shot. He only had a second to aim, but he hoped it'd be enough to knock out the one that was nearly out already.

At fucking last. Merlin's sagging sleeves but it was about bloody time that thing went down. It didn't make him physically ache any less but he was definitely perking up as he watched the dummy eat dirt. He felt almost sorry, too, because that would have been a hell of a save if Andy had pulled it off completely. At that angle though he was pretty sure his arm hurting a helluva lot. He was proven right when his friend swapped arms. It was an important aspect of being beater, actually, though most people didn't try. Ben had always been ambidextrous but he still favored his right arm. He played most games with his right so it stood to reason. In practice though it was important to swap back and forth, just in case, like Andy was doing.

He was fairly sure he hadn't broken anything at least. He'd had similar shots as well, though, and knew from experience that at the very least Andy's wrist hurt like a banshee. Maybe even his elbow. Bludgers were nasty that way.

He hovered in the air, gripping his bat loosely, as he watched the bludger loop around towards Andy. He tried his best to relax his muscles, breathing in slowly, as he eyed his friends next move. As soon as Andy made contact with the bludger Ben gripped his bat firmly, before shooting forward on his broom. From the angle he was at he managed to clip the bludger a bit, but not enough as it still sailed towards its intended target. The dummy didn't go down quietly though. It one last mighty heave, slamming against his shoulder, before puttering and dropping. It seemed as if he would't catch a bloody break, the things were out to kill him. He could feel yet another bruise blooming, bright and painful. Just like that they were even, again. He was both pleased and frustrated they seemed to be so evenly matched. Frustrating because he wanted to win, but pleased because there was comfort in having your partner to be so skilled.

So far, at least, he'd taken out the back half of Andy's diamond. He figured it would be easier for him to target the remaining dummies as well as harder for Andy to protect them from all sides. The tall Slytheirn surged forward, aiming front and center, as he wacked his bat against the iron bludger.

There was barely a minute to breathe in between the shots now. While Andy could undoubtedly appreciate the defensive rhythm they found themselves in, his body was screaming for a rest. When Ben said he wanted to practice differently, the Captain certainly hadn’t expected him to have something like []ithis[/i] in mind. Regardless, quitting wasn’t an option, and as he watched a dummy slam into his opponent, Andy knew resting wasn’t either. He geared up for the next shot, engaging his core and sitting up as straight as his aching sides would allow on the broom, eyes wide open.

Ben took another shot, and given which targets were left, it was reasonably easy to guess which one the bludger was headed for, but that didn’t mean Andy would get there in time. Or that the magical ball of pain wouldn’t decide to change course at the last minute. Being a beater wasn’t always as simple as following, aiming, and hitting; sometimes the Bludgers had their plans, and sometimes they smashed into the dummy and then came after you instead. Andy didn’t reach his figure in time, and it took a wallop of a hit before the bludger turned its sights on Andy, and he was forced to protect himself.

Trying to move out of the line of fire but stuck between the remaining dummies, Andy bounced off the next one, and it bumped him back. Like some awful pinball game, Andy was battered once more by the dummy before he got out of what was left of his formation and cursed a few times. Irritation and adrenaline added a little extra oomph at the sassy bludger that hovered nearby, just waiting now for him to take another shot—blasted bludgers would kill them both.

Merlin! Things were starting to get a bit intense weren't they? That was always the case once you started to tire, though. They'd both been out here a bit and had taken some damage themselves. Next time he wasn't definitely going to finagle these damn dummies to be less... like they were. Or maybe not. It really depended on the shape they were in when they got to the castle. He took a deep breath, readying himself for the next onslaught.

He had a moment in sympathy when he saw Andy get slammed against his back. That was definitely going to bruise. He was seriously going to be needing to buy a bigger replenishment of bruise paste. He wondered if they had any in jumbo size or something because at the rate they were going, well, they'd definitely benefit from it. And to be quite honest as much pain as he was in he was also having fun. Which if he knew Andy at all meant, of course, that they'd definitely be doing this again.

Much as he hated the front green dummy he was bloody determined to finish knocking it out of the sky. At least he'd made contact, right? That had been satisfying though not as satisfying as actually knocking it clean out of the sky. He took another deep breath, willing the bruising to remain an ache, as he pushed everything down and tried to focus. He waited patiently for the bludger Andy was aiming to make it towards him, tensing, as he remained center, in front of what was left of his own diamond. Wind rushing through his ears, Ben clobbered the incoming bludger, not having a chance to really take as good aim as he'd like from the adrenaline coursing through him.

Bloody hell what a rush!

If he had a second to think about it, Andy might have realized that he couldn't count the number of body parts that weren't aching, but he didn't. Almost as soon as he'd sent the bludger flying, the other beater had deflected it, and Andronicus smiled brightly. As much as they were gearing off against each other, they were also practicing to make their team better, and seeing his teammate excel gave Andy a surge of pride. It helped him ignore the soreness that was already settling in his tired muscles and get back in the game.

Ben's last shot hadn't taken his first dummy out of the game, but Andy could tell from the way it was levitating a bit lower than the others that it, too, was hurting. One more direct hit, and it would surely be out of the game, and the Captain was determined not to let that happen. Seeing his teammate succeed was terrific and all, but at the end of the day, Andronicus was still a Slytherin, and he wanted to win. He raced back toward Dummy #1, careful not to get in the middle of the others again, and blocked the shot with the skill he'd honed these last six years. Whether it was skill, luck, or just pure adrenaline, time felt as if it slowed enough for Andronicus not only to block the shot but also line up his following.

Well something could definitely be said about Andy's reaction time. It had been so  close to eating dirt, too. Utterly disappointing but it definitely made him dig his heels in. "Nice!" he hollered, appreciative, because his Captain's form was top-notch on that one. He could appreciate skill when he was in the midst of it, despite the fact that it made him harder for him to succeed. It wouldn't have been even half as fun with a less worthy opponent, though, of that he was certain.

Still, he definitely wasn't prepared for the quick volley back. He cursed, wincing, when he pulled at a sore muscle as he dove forward. He'd just gotten to barely clip the bludger as it sailed past him and slammed right into the center dummy. He had a split second to regret how close he was before he felt the dummy whiplash harshly right onto his left shoulder. He hissed, the breath leaving him, as he felt it flare intensely for a moment before fading. Bloody hell.

At least it was still left standing, despite the mighty wallop it had received. Best get his head back into the game! With a grunt, the tall Slytherin flew in a wide arc, spotting the bludger ahead and cocking his arm back as he raced towards it. He used him momentum to power his shot a bit as he aimed for the dummy that wouldn't give in to his shots.

Andy managed to block off an attack, and that had given him another surge of motivation. The need to win, that Slytherin desire to be the best at whatever he did, kept him pushing forward. He smiled brightly at Ben's compliment, another sense of bravado washing over him. New fuel in his veins, Andy watched the bludger he'd sent hit the target, and it wobbled. Ben got caught in the momentum, but neither the dummy nor the other beater was out of the game yet. And that made the Slytherin frown. It was close but not out, and the game was still tied. He geared up, taking a deep breath, his ribs aching and watched Ben line up his next shot. It was easy to assume he'd aim for the half-damaged dummy, but Andy still wasn't able to wholly block the shot.

He had gone too far out when he took the last shot and getting back to the target with a half-broken wrist and who knew how many other bruises forming was quite the feat. It was almost as if his broom understood, but not even the extra jolt of momentum could get Andy back in time. Watching as the bludger careened into the dummy, and it twisted unevenly as it plummeted to the grass, Andy winced. Some small part of him thankful he hadn't been in front of the shot; he wasn't sure how much more of this his body could take.

But there was no time for that, and within seconds the beater was on the bludger, spinning around it and aiming for Ben's weakened target.

It seemed to Ben that as soon as one of them got the edge the other would suddenly catch up. He should've been better prepared for Andy targeting the same dummy, and he was, but he just couldn't quite get the right angle to deflect the bludger completely. Solid enough second hit for the dummy to shudder, before sailing into the dirt. At least it seemed he was getting a better handle on not getting slammed. Still this meant they were even once again. Down to two each, now, which raised the stakes considerably.

He was tired, getting to that point where he was going to max out, and the bruising was tarted to twinge. His muscles were starting to feel like jelly but he refused to quit until one of them had won. He felt sure that Andy was of the same mindset. Which would his next target be? Center or flank? The beater, dove low, waiting to a good moment as the bludger sailed towards him. If he could get just the right angle... as the bludger got closer Ben dove, taking a wild swing, and aiming straight for the flank.

Tired seemed like a level Andy had passed some time ago; he’d busted straight through tired and exhausted and was nearing the point of absolutely drained. They were young athletics, teenage wizards with quite a bit of stamina, but they were still human. And Andronicus winced, just pulling the broom toward him to get back into a defensive stance after hitting the last bludger. It sailed for Ben’s target, another silver dummy falling to the ground. Three out each now, the game was nearing the end and knowing that was daunting. Andronicus was always careful to save a little in reserve for the end game, but this practice had taken more out of him than he had been expecting. Being beaten up by bludgers and enchanted dummies did that, he supposed.

Benjamin’s next shot came flying over, and Andy calculated the arc a bit slower than he might usually have. Even his brain was tiring out. It went to the side, and Andy rushed to follow it, but he was a lot slower than before. A lot less responsive. He needed to get his momentum going again; he needed to wake up and get back in the game, despite the growing need to lie down for a while. “Shit,” He cursed, realizing there was no way he’d make it to the bludger in time. It smashed into his dummy, doing a fair bit of damage, and Andronicus was surprised it didn’t fall to the ground. A little bit of luck, perhaps, but it jolted him as he took another shot. Aiming for the dummy in the second spot and hoping Ben wouldn’t get there in time either.

Be master of your petty annoyances and conserve your energy for the big, worthwhile things, for it isn't the mountain ahead that wears you out, it is the grain of sand in your shoe.

Getting enough air in his lungs was beginning to be a problem, he thought, even as the mantra stuck in his head. If he wanted to win, actually win and not tie, he needed to play smart. They'd already established they were roughly even and the only way forward was to play smart. To that aim, only one thing would get him the win, he just had to determine the risk-reward here. Conserving his remaining energy seemed the best move. Less movement was also ideal in terms of not making the bruises feel worse. He gripped his broom, watching in satisfaction as he hit its mark. Not quite enough to make it drop, though.

He hovered, deciding not to move, as the bludger Andy shot sailed straight back. It would take quicker reflexes than he had in reserve to deflect and that would leave his own shot week on the return, he analyzed, unhappy about both those things. If he waited, though, and used the rebound to fuel his own shot he had a better chance of clearing the board, sort of speak. He wasn't happy about deliberately letting his dummy get hit, there was no guarantee Andy wouldn't clear it, but even if he did so long as he was successful with his next shot it would still be even.

And then it would be down to the last ones, the last stretch. Risk-reward, he thought to himself ruefully as he watched the bludger sail right into the unprotected dummy with a crunching sound. It swayed for a moment but stayed up and he let loose a breath. He waited as the bludger rebounded, moving quickly and lining up for his own shot.

Watching from the wake of the bludger he'd just sent toward Ben, Andronicus realized that the other Slytherin wasn't moving for it. He saw Ben look and then wait, and it only took the seasoned chess player a few seconds to realize it was calculated. Ben was tough, so Andy hadn't thought he was giving up, but he was also clever, so it made the most sense that letting the bludger go past him was on purpose. And as soon as he heard the crack of the bat, Andy understood why. It was a perfect shot, aimed just so that Andy could barely make out where it was headed. It was the sort of shot he depended on Ben for during games. The ones that kept the other team guessing it was trademark Benjamin, and Andy realized he didn't much care for being on this side of it.

He flew toward his central dummy, only to realize too late it was going for the flank again, double thinking himself and missing the block; Andy was irritated. "Good one!" He called out through gritted teeth. It was an impressive shot, especially this late in the practice, but Andy wasn't perfect; of course, he was a little sore about it. At least he didn't have any dummies smacking him around, making matters worse. At least he had that — for now. Andy swerved out of the way of the rebounding bludger and followed it a little further down the pitch; it left his dummies unguarded but gave him a tiny bit of grace when it came to lining up a good shot. He had his eyes on the nearly out dummy from the last turn, and he was going to put that thing into the ground.

Blast, he thought ruefully. He almost had it. But almost only counted for exploding snaps or exploding charms. He watched as his bludger hit the mark, it toppled like it was going to go, before holding true in the air. He grit his teeth, annoyed, even as Andy's words registered. It was getting that point where both boys were bruised, tired, and hungry so he was fairly sure Andy felt the same way he did: irritable as hell. "Thanks!" he hollered back, because he could appreciate that it was a good shot. Only he wished it'd been just a tad more effective.

It meant he was going to have to hustle double-time, didn't it?

Only the strength and speed of that incoming bludger was nothing to sneeze at. He took a wild swing at it anyway, on principle alone, and he felt good about nicking it. Not that it did much as it slammed into the dummy hard enough to rock it backwards, wood splintering, before it gave out against the onslaught. Damn and blast but he was glad he hadn't put himself behind that thing. He wouldn't broken his wrist trying to deflect it at this point and he still had a game to win. He couldn't afford to injure himself further right now. Besides that was a bloody beauiful shot. "Nice!" he yelled, impressed despite himself, as he gave Andy a tired grin.

Two to one. Lets even things out a bit yea?

Ben gained sme altitude, changing things up a bit from his usual dives, and veered sharply to the left. It would look like he was trying to set up a shit to blast the middle but in reality we was angling his body to better attack the flank. Just as he'd set his sights on the bludger the tall boy rolled, slamming his bat against iron, as he steered it towards the top of the dummy, hoping to bash its stupid face in. He should feel proud that his charms work was that good, but right now he was supremely annoyed.

Seeing Ben complete a rolling maneuver before smacking the bludger toward him, Andy instinctually knew this would be a challenging shot to block. Even if he wasn't exhausted and aching head to toe, it would have still been a nightmare to defend against. Good for the Slytherin Quidditch team - Bad for Andy. He grimaced, knowing how bad it'd hurt if he put himself between the bludger and the dummy, but it didn't matter anyway. Andronicus hadn't gotten there in time, and before he knew it, the dummy was falling to the ground unceremoniously. Smashed to bits, Andy knew how it felt, and he let out a rough breath. Everything hurt, but the game was far from over.

They were tied now, and there was nothing left to do but give it everything he had. Andronicus wanted to win this, and he was determined to do so. He chased the bludger as it rounded the pitch again, and even though it couldn't have been confirmed, he felt like he was starting to understand the bludgers movements. It had come back and forth on the pitch so many times in such short succession now, and it seemed like it always twisted just before the Ravenclaw blue and bronze stands. Andronicus waited for the twist and then wound back and aimed for another of Ben's targets.

The satisfaction at having a dummy finally eat dirt definitely fueled him. Success made him both bold and stupid at this point in the game, though, and he tried to reel in the instinct he had to just revel in the afterglow a bit. He couldn't forget that he still had his very formidable opponent essentially baying for his blood, though, much as he appreciated Andy when he wasn't facing off against him. Though he supposed facing off with someone you respected made everything even better. He could almost taste the win, and he was the type of guy to push through anything just so he could feel the rush of success.

Only he felt the rush of a bludger slam into his side instead. "Fuck." he cursed, feeling something no doubt essential crack. The pain was sharp and hot for a split second as he braced himself on his broom before it numbed into something a lot more bearable. He took a deep breath, wincing in relief, when the gasp of air didn't make anything throb. The good news? It definitely wasn't his ribs. The bad? It was definitely something. Hopefully nothing broken but he wasn't super hopeful on that front. Nothing bad enough for skelegrow, though, he fervently hoped. That stuff was putrid. He was glad at least he'd managed to block most of the bludger with his body. He felt stupid about it but also relieved it meant they were still tied.

The fact that he was worried about winning instead of maybe something on his body broken should have really explained anything you needed to know about what his priorities were. Not bothering to take another moment the tall Slytherin barreled into another dive, using the momentum to slam his bat fast and hard against the nearest bludger, aiming for the center.

Andy's hit missed, and he huffed loudly. The teenager was growing tired, and exhaustion typically led to crankiness. So when Ben's next shot began heading toward him, the Slytherin raced to defend the fifth target, it was down to the last marks, and even though the fifth one had initially been the most protected, it was now the most vulnerable for Andy. All of the others around it had fallen, and this one was his last. If Ben hit it hard enough, it'd be game over, and as tired as he was, Andronicus was not ready to lose.

And he certainly wasn't giving up.

Not even if it meant situating himself in front of a bludger bearing down on him, which was precisely what he did. The bludger was fast, and Andy was exhausted, so his feeble attempt to smack it away backfired. The ball ran down the line of his bat, smashed into his core, and sent Andy backward toward the very target he was protecting. The target took some damage, but Andy took more. He coughed; the wind knocked clean out of him and blinked away the stars in his eyes. It took him a moment to get back whatever focus he had left and just in time to whack the bludger again.

If this grueling bit of training didn't send them to the morgue, he was sure they'd be better off for it. So Andy rewound his arm, it was now or never, shouted, and sent the bludger hurling toward the outer target of Ben's that was still floating.

He was starting to think this game would never end. On one hand he was sort of glad they were so well-matched. On the other hand they were so well matched. It made this exhausting and painful but very rewarding. He would be quite upset if they didn't beat Huffepuff. (Plus Jae would never let him live it down).

Maybe he could could pawn off Prefect rounds to off to his counterpart tonight on account of being broken. His least favorite prefect duty was roaming the castle in search of some poor couple looking to get a little broom closet time. He'd literally rather do anything else. A bath was starting to sound really nice, too, on account of the fact that his captain had literally jostled some bones loose, no doubt. He was so close to victory he could very well taste it though, which was why he was beyond ready when the bludger was shot back his way.

Maybe beyond ready was stretching it a bit, though, because his brain was firing off faster than his body could currently move. He winced as his bat got the tail end of the bludger in a bit of a clip, the iron ball slowing but not stoping, as it managed to get a good chunk of the dummy he'd been protecting. Not solid enough to shoot it down, though, which he was glad for. He felt a spike of adrenaline as he swooped down, feeling his body protest, as his muscles creaked. He was starting to get stiff now, which wasn't good when you were trying to hit an iron ball with fast reflexes and brute force. He supposed it was bit all or nothing now, wasn't it? With a great heave the tall Slytherin lined up what would, hopefully, be his last shot.

They were in the end game now, and Andronicus knew one way or the other someone was going to win soon. He didn’t know where the last bit of energy was coming from, and honestly, it was probably purely adrenaline by now, but he didn’t question it either. As Benjamin’s shot came rocketing toward him, the Slytherin felt like he was laser-focused. Able to assess better than before, to time his blocking perfectly (also it helped that he knew exactly where the shot was headed, having only one target left), and Andy stopped it with skill.

He managed to block the shot and wind back enough to send it soaring back at Benjamin. It was almost like a tennis game now, volleying back and forth, and Andy knew he didn’t have much more of this in him. If his shot missed, and Ben hit it back again, he wondered if he’d be able to block it. Andy hoped he wouldn’t have to find out. They had both played so well; the Captain liked to think he’d be happy either way, that they were both very skilled and had earned the win, but he was a little too tired now to pretend to be better than he was deep down. Andy wanted to win.

Fuck.

He honestly wasn't prepared for such a quick volley back and he wasn't going to get there in enough time to block. He winced as the dummy was hit and down it went. He'd been so close! Despite the fact his captain had won, though, he couldn't resist wanting to finish.

With a tired grin the tall Slytherin sped up, willing his aches and pains to stay within manageable levels, as he sought the bludger for what he hoped would be his last bloody shot. He was so tired, now, on top of achy that it made it difficult to strategize. It felt like they'd been at this for what felt like months, but where really hours. It'd been fun, though, he was just at the tail end of his endurance now that all he wanted was a long soak in the prefects bath and to sleep for a thousand years. Maybe if they asked the kitchen elves nicely they make some snacks appear in their dorms.

The prefect took a deep breath, angling himself best he could, as he dived at the iron ball with all of his remaining strength. He brought his bat arm down, feeling the zing in his arm as bat and ball made contact, as he sent the bludger careening towards the last remaining dummy. Andy had won fair but if he could at least get the last dummy out in one last hit, he'd feel better about loosing, it'd been close afterall. There was no way his remaining dummy would survive another direct hit in the air and he was questioning how good his reflexes remained, so late in the game, but it frankly didn't matter. One last shot.

Andronicus Wins!

Andy had half expected his shot to miss entirely, he was so tired and aching in places he didn't even know he had, but when he saw the bludger arching perfectly, he couldn't stop the smug grin from appearing on his face. It was a hard-fought victory, and Andronicus was proud of them both for playing as well as they did, but in the end, he was happy to have won. Ben's last dummy sank to the ground, and Andronicus smirked, telling himself there was a reason he was captain but then reminding himself that that was a rude thing to think. The inner battle for morals and compassion couldn't even give it a rest after a deserved victory, it seemed, and he scolded himself even as Ben lined up another shot.

The Slytherin managed to block it and protect his dummy one final time before Andy sank to the ground. Weary and in pain, he held his side as he stepped off of his broom and moved to the center of the pitch to congratulate Benjamin on a game well played. Andronicus wasn't going to give him some platitude like 'it didn't matter who won' because he knew that wasn't the case. They were both Slytherins, both competitive. "Well played, Ben," he did manage to say, though, and that was entirely true.

"Think I might have broken my... well, everything," Andronicus said with a chuckle that sent another shockwave of pain rippling out from his ribs, and he groaned.

Swing and a fucking miss. Well he supposed he should be mature and take his loss like someone who actually knew the meaning of sportsmanship. With a bit of a grumble the Slytherin followed his captain down, resisting the urge to kick the dirt like a child. He was so sore though, in both a non-literal and literal sense. "Shuddup, you fucking smug troll." he managed, narrowing his eyes a bit, even as a smirk curled up his lips. He couldn't be mad, exactly. He liked Andy and a good deal of what he liked about him was that he was brilliant at Quidditch. He could at least take comfort in that it had been bloody close, though that did little to alleviate the little pit in his gut that was pure disappointment.

"Though I suppose you played brilliantly, even though you sound like your're dying." he said, grinning, before a sharp pain made itself known on his side. Damn and blast. He was relatively sure his bones shouldn't feel this... loose. It wasn't a pleasant loose, either, but more like something had cracked and the debris was floating along his bloodstream and cutting up his insides while someone poured hot water over everything.

In a word: unpleasant.

"Do you reckon we should... fly to the Hospital Wing?" he asked gingerly. It was either that or they'd have to lean on each-other and pretty much drag themselves there.

While Andronicus was proud of them both, he wasn’t above gloating, and the look on Benjamin’s face just made his win that much sweeter. And if every bone, muscle, and a bit of Andy’s body weren’t aching something fierce right now, the seventh year would have probably been smirking. “I think I might be dying,” he said with a laugh, but it came out more like a cough followed by a groan, and Andronicus clutched his side. It was a hell of a match, and it was hell on their bodies too, but Andronicus felt like it was going to pay off…. Well, just as soon as they fixed some broken bones and things. After that it will have been worth it.

“Yeah…. Probably….” Andronicus agreed that they were far more likely to arrive at the Hospital Wing if they flew rather than walked, but the idea of getting back on his broom was a tiresome one. He was so far past that burning sensation from a good workout that Andronicus wondered if his muscles might just up and quit. Go on strike, protest, and shut down. He wouldn’t blame them. And from the look of Benjamin, he probably wasn’t feeling a whole lot better. He’d taken just as many hits as Andy (and he’d lost, which was painful in and of itself, Andy reminded himself proudly).

“I’ll give you a chance to redeem yourself, Danvers,” he began, turning back to his broom and groaning as he threw one leg over it and got ready to fly. “If you can beat me to the hospital wing,” Andronicus waited the proper amount of time (proper: not a fair amount, but enough for Benjamin to get to his broom, at least) before he rocked toward the castle.

"Me too." the tall boy admitted ruefully, a twisted little grin hanging off his lips, as he gave a hacking sort of laugh that probably sounded like something was loose where it really shouldn't be. He wondered, briefly, if this was the sort of behavior that made muggleborns question a wizard sanity and common sense. He knew they were stupidly practical, most the time, and he'd gotten quite a few ... acquaintances a little miffed by his lack of grounding thoughts but well, what could one do? He loved Quidditch and he was grossly disconnected by the plight of the common witch or wizard in general. He wasn't even sure where his thoughts seemed to gearing towards even, other than it'd be nice to get an "I'm injured play with my hair" type of snuggle and snog, but didn't fancy the conversation that he was an idiot for putting himself into the predicament to begin with.

"You're lucky you have Jacq." he muttered, feelingly vaguely put out. His captain was a lucky bloke, really, because Jacq was smoking and Andy was bound to get a good amount of sympathy from his girlfriend. (Maybe without the judgement he'd get for being an idiot, too, which was a bit unfair.)

And because he was, in fact, a competitive idiot he perked up at the thought of redemption even as his body protested. Loudly. Fuck it, though, you only lived once right? "You're on Lovecraft." he said gamely, bright blue eyes narrowing a bit as he got in position. He took a breath, sending a little prayer to the flying gods listening, before he mounted his broom and decided that the risk was worth the reward. Maybe. If he was really fucking careful. He had the thought that as a prefect he should know if this was against the rules or not but, well, as a Slytherin you were only in trouble if you got caught.

He figured he could flub his way through a fairly decent impression of being concussed or confunded, actually, especially since his body was breaking into tiny pieces.

Risk vs. Reward.

As they jumped on their brooms, Andy was sure he felt every bit of his body screaming for reprieve. They probably shoulnd't have been flying right now, but damn if it didn't sound like a far easier way to get to the Hospital Wing than the stairs. And now that they'd made it another competition, Andronicus's tired (and probably half-broken) body had very little to do with the decision-making. Speed had always been important as a beater, but it had never been the most crucial part. Power was more critical, and he'd built and maintained his broom for precisely that. It could take a beating without giving up, and it responded to his commands quickly and without complication, but it wasn't swift. It wasn't a seeker's broom, after all.

And yet, as they rounded the castle's spires and approached the large windows of the Hospital Wing, Andronicus realized he was in the lead. And then he realized that winning also meant he'd be the first one to crash through the open window and land on the polished marble floor. He'd be the first to take questions (and potentially ire) from Madam Pomfrey. And he wanted none of that. Better to lose on purpose, he decided, and the Slytherin pulled back at the last second to let Benjamin pass him. Unless Benjamin noticed Andy's tactics change, of course.
