Get ready for a summer of wintery fun! This year, participants in the ISS have been invited to join a team of naturalists and researchers at Mawson Peak Station on Heard Island and McDonald Islands: a collective Australian external territory located in the sub-Antarctics.

Co-location with this summer's international Broomstick Sports Camp (BSC) allows students to participate in both activities during the same session, if so desired.

[[OOC note: If you're starting a new thread at the International Summer School, please include the prefix [ISS] in the title of your thread and be sure that thread is located in the general Outside World board. Any IC posts made at the ISS do count toward qualifying age-up posts. Check out the Pinterest board for inspiration!]]

SESSION DATES

>> 18th – 31st July 2005
>> 1st – 14th August 2005

ACTIVITIES

>> Expeditions with different Naturalists ([Magi]zoologists, Herbologists, Ecologists, Geologists, etc.)
>> Whale watching
>> Survival training
>> Scavenger hunts
>> Cauldron sleigh races
>> Ice-fishing
>> Stargazing/ Aurora australis viewing
>> Various classes/seminars

ACCOMMODATIONS

Students live in igloos in groups of two to four, and may be assigned to room-in with BSC participants. They need to bring warm clothes and hiking boots with spikes. The igloos are enchanted so it’s not too cold inside, and there are Undetectable Extension Charms in place to make the igloos more spacious than they appear. These igloos are located within a small wizarding community comprised of Australian researchers and naturalists on Heard Island.

Food and drinks will be delivered to the island, though students will also learn how to light a fire and prepare meals themselves. There is also a mess hall on-site for community meals. Most offered classes don’t require a classroom but those that do can find some room in one of the larger igloos.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The islands have an Antarctic/Tundra climate (tempered slightly by their maritime setting) with persistent cloud cover, frequent precipitation, and strong predominately westerly winds. Students should be aware that the expected ambient temperature for this time of year averages between -1.4°C (29.5°F) and 2.2°C (36°F).

The islands do have a history of volcanic activity; however, specialized consultants have long-since devised means to maintain safety on the island should there be an event. These consultants have also devised enchantments and illusions that mimic eruptions (without any real danger) at periodic intervals to keep any curious Muggle researchers well at bay.

There are scholarships available for students who cannot afford the summer school. Students applying for one of these must obtain a letter of recommendation from a teacher/professor or mentor that speaks to the student's extracurricular engagement or a special interest in natural sciences or survival; students must also submit a brief personal statement on the topic, as well as what they hope to gain from the experience.

HEARD ISLAND & MCDONALD ISLANDS

Interested in spending your time away from school playing any manner of broomstick sport? You won't want to miss this summer's international Broomstick Sports Camp (BSC), let alone its unique location this year on Heard Island and McDonald Islands: a collective Australian external territory located in the sub-Antarctics.

Co-location with this year's International Summer School (ISS) allows students to participate in both activities during the same session, if so desired.

[[OOC note: If you're starting a new thread at the Broomstick Sports Camp, please include the prefix [BSC] in the title of your thread and be sure that thread is located in the general Outside World board. Any IC posts made at the BSC do count toward qualifying age-up posts.]]

SESSION DATES

>> 18th – 31st July 2005
>> 1st – 14th August 2005

ACTIVITIES

The camp boasts a variety of broomstick sports: from Quidditch and Quodpot, to Shuntbumps, to broom races, and more. During their stay, students from all over the world are randomly assigned to teams and will be able to enjoy practicing their preferred broomstick sport(s) with experienced professional athletes. Everyone is encouraged to try out different positions and sports throughout their stay. A tournament with the camp teams (involving a medley of broomstick sports) is held in the final few days. Who knows... maybe there are some hidden talents and new interests to discover!

ACCOMMODATIONS

Students live in igloos in groups of two to four, and may be assigned to room-in with ISS participants. They need to bring warm clothes and hiking boots with spikes, as well as a broomstick (if they have one, though there are plenty of loaners available if needed). The igloos are enchanted so it’s not too cold inside, and there are Undetectable Extension Charms in place to make the igloos more spacious than they appear. The igloos are located within a small wizarding community comprised of Australian researchers and naturalists on Heard Island. Food and drinks will be delivered to the island, and there is a mess hall on-site for community meals.

In terms of locations of training sites,  there are multiple pitches protected by permeable climate-controlled domes. Solid objects can pass through unrestricted (though certain equipment such as Bludgers, the Golden Snitch, etc. do have a finite enchanted boundary for safety purposes) and fresh air readily circulates, though within the shell of enchantment students are protected from extreme temperatures and particularly harsh weather elements.
Camp organizers understand that certain students may be wary of an enchanted dome-like structure due to prior experiences, and encourage these students to reach out to staff for accommodations or alternative options if desired.

There are scholarships available for students who cannot afford the camp. Students applying for one of these must obtain a letter of recommendation from a teacher/professor or mentor that speaks to the student's extracurricular engagement or special interest in broomstick sport(s); students must also submit a brief personal statement on the topic, as well as what they hope to gain from the experience.
