General Info

The Room of Requirement has existed almost as long as Hogwarts castle, though due to its nature, it is impossible to say how or when the room was originally created. However, generations of Hogwarts students and staff have discovered the room purely by chance, though on some occasions they never realised its true nature. In recent times the room has been used to hide many items, as a place for illicit meetings and even allowed Winky the house elf to sleep off the hangovers she suffered due to drinking eccessive butterbeer.

However, during the Battle of Hogwarts something changed. For weeks, the room had been used as a hideoout for Dumbledore's Army, always maintaining the same form so that increasing numbers of students could stay hidden from the Carrows. As an extension of its magic, the room provided a secret passageway to the Hogs' Head so food and drink could be brought in. Immediately following this, it was reopened in one of its more familiar forms, the Room of Hidden Objects, when Harry, Ron and Hermione sought Ravenclaw's Diadem. However, they were followed by some of the youngest Death Eater followers, and Vincent Crabbe loosed the Fiendfyre curse. While all but Crabbe escaped the fire, the Room of Hidden Objects did not. Neither was the Room entirely unaffected; while it will still provide according the the visitor's needs, strange objects or items may appear that had previously been provided for an earlier occupant.

Playing at the RoR

The Room of Requirement is located on the seventh floor of the Hogwarts castle, opposite a tapestry depicting the attempt of Barnabas the Barmy to teach trolls ballet. The room only shows itself if really needed, and can be opened by walking past it three times, thinking about what you need. Then the door will appear. However, please note the difference between 'want' and 'need'. Threads for illicit parties, random romantic encounters and the like do not need to be held in the Room of Requirement and will be locked.

Furthermore, please note that the Room of Requirement is not common knowledge. Students who were in the DA will naturally know of its existence, but new first years will not. By all means have your student wandering around exploring on the seventh floor, but they aren't going to find the room completely at random unless they have need of it.

The Room of Hidden Things

As stated above, this room was destroyed by Fiendfyre during the Battle of Hogwarts. However, when in need of a place to hide something the Room of Requirement now provides a small room with cabinets, cupboards and shelves. The room might grow if more space is needed, but presently it is quite small.
