It was the first day of another new term at Durmstrang yet Jannick Pritzlaff had none of the nerves of a new teacher. At nearly 100 years old, Jannick was the oldest professor at the institute by far. He had been teaching, albeit tutoring individual pupils rather than in a room full of them, for nearly half a century. He knew his subject as well or better than anyone alive. He had no reason to be nervous. On top of that, he was here as much for the school’s benefit as anything else. Necromancy was not something that could be taught by just anyone. For it to be done right, it needed to be someone who understood the delicate balance of art and science in necromantic magics. He was the most logical choice the institute could have made. They needed an expert, so they had come to him; enough said.

Gathering his instruments, Jannick made his way down the flight of stairs from his office to his classroom. Laying everything out meticulously, Jannick gave a lazy flick of his wand at the board and his welcome began inscribing itself. As it did so, Jannick took a polishing cloth from his bag and ensured that each instrument, his various knives, his scales, the vials and other containers each shone with a brilliance due to items of such quality and craftsmanship. He had worked with the finest metallurgists across the continent to assemble his collection and he wanted that to be evident from the very first moment the students saw each piece. They needed to understand how important it was to take care of one’s tools of the trade.

As he finished polishing the last crystalline vial, Jannick heard the students begin filling in. Gently replacing the vial in its place, Jannick strode round the table and took a seat looking out at the students as they found their seats. A quick survey of the group gave him little hope that any would truly embrace the subtly required to excel in his subject. There would be those who could passably do what was necessary for the course, sure, but he had little hope any of them would follow in his steps and dedicate their lives to the art.

As the last student filed in, Jannick rose and rapped the table with his knuckle loudly. “Quiet!” his voice cut through any remaining chatter like the knives he was so comfortable with. “When you pass through that door, each of you should consider that you are leaving behind the world of life and death. You are entering a space between, a space that has no time for your idle chatter. Necromancy is both art and science. A careful combination of technical skill, careful preparation, and meticulous attention to detail. Doubtless, few of you will have the patience or natural skill required to begin the path towards mastering this craft; but perhaps there is one or two who may. I am professor Pritzlaff. You may call me such. I have been a practitioner of the necromantic arts longer than many of your parents or even grandparents have been living. Should you chose to apply yourself, with a bit of luck you may learn a thing or two during our time together; but before we can get to that point, I first need to see what you know.”

With another lazy wave of his wand, Jannik’s prepared quiz materialized before each of the students. He was aware this was their first day; he didn’t care. The quiz would be simple enough for any with a brain, and for those without, it was better that he identify them on his first day rather than waste his time trying to squeeze water from a rock. Returning to his seat, Jannick turned over an hourglass. “When the last of the sand has dropped, your time will be over. Begin!”

OOC: Each quiz is made up of five questions from this list. Choose any five and answer them as best as your character would know. Some questions may not have “real” answers or answers given in canon so extra points for more creative answers. Post your answers as part of your reply. When sufficient time has been given for replies, we will continue with the lesson. Good luck 😊

1.   Name four of the primary arteries in the human body.
2.   Name four of the primary veins in the human body.
3.   What quantity of blood is sufficient for the animation of a human skeleton?
4.   Provide 7 of the 12 uses for dragon’s blood.
5.   What type of knife should be used in the harvesting of blood from magical creatures or individuals?
6.   List possible side effects of using non-magical blood as a part of a necromantic ritual.
7.   Order the following sigils appropriately for a standard summoning spell: “air” “breath” “ground” “blood” “bone”
8.   Under what lunar conditions should the creation of inferi be conducted?
9.   What are two natural conditions that can negatively impact the summoning of undead?
10.   How much time may pass before harvested blood is considered to have lost its freshness?

Döttrar Vik / Re: When all is said and done and dead [Mihkkal]
« Last post by Dzmitry Zelenko on Yesterday at 11:46:28 AM »
Dzmitry frowned a little. “I said when you’re ready, of course, but you can’t avoid it forever–especially if you worry that you’re still dating, you know? What if, and I doubt it, but what if he thinks the same thing?” He wondered. “I’m just saying, communicate.” He sighed. “When you’re ready, of course, but nothing will improve until then.” He paid the tab and let the other get himself up and situated.

He offered an arm to Mihkkal on the way out of the pub and down the street, though he didn’t really expect the other to take it. “Anything else going on in your life?” He wondered. “Special? Nice? Better than this crap?” He asked, hoping something would be going well for them. He, himself, had been hiding in a friend’s dorm to avoid Stepan for a few days already.

He wanted to talk more about his crap, but he knew Mihkkal needed to talk about his own stuff right now, so he was all ears. He glanced at him, feeling a little sad for Mihkkal, and himself.

Hyacinth hit the wall with a thud and a “eep!” Nervous, and uncertain, she looked up at Ian with wide eyes. He was being so different now, so completely aggressive. She worried about him. This was not the Ian who kissed her so softly moments before. “Ian, please…” SHe managed, a little scared from the quick switch in him. However, when he kissed her, she kissed back. Her hesitancy turned to enjoyment after a few confused seconds. She wondered if she underestimated his feelings, and if he was trying to hold back the aggressive monster that pinned her. Why? Why would he want to hurt or scare her? Why not just hold her, and kiss her?

She let herself relax into the kiss after several moments passed, but she still wondered. What had that moment been, and would he want to hurt her again? Did he really want to hurt her at all? The questions in her mind made her heart race. As the kiss ended, longer than she suspected it ought to have been, she was breathing a little hard.

“Maybe we should get back after-all, Ian…” She managed. “I don’t know what’s coming over you.”

Europe / Re: [Switzerland] Fly me to the moon [River]

River held Nikon close during their hug, pressing his arms tight around the other's body to ground Nikon a little, a smile playing on his lips as Nikon’s warmth seeped into him. The brief contact left a lingering sense of comfort, and he found himself wishing they could spend more time together. The complexity of Nikon’s current situation wasn't lost on River, he was well informed about it, and he could sense the nerves and apprehension underlying Nikon’s smile. While Nikon tried to look aloof, it was his eyes that gave him away a little, not quite able to hide the way he looked at River and the Frenchman was able to pick up on these sort of things quite well.

“Well, if you’re heading to London tonight, I’d love to meet up,” River said with a grin, quick to assure Nikon. “I know you’ve got your hands full, but even a quick hello would be nice, whatever you think you'll have the time for." He told him, "and I’ll save those cookies for sure. They’ll be waiting for us when we can both really let loose.” He smirked a little, his mind flickering back to their short visit to Incubus—what might happen next time they go after Nikon has no relationship that's keeping him away from River?

He shifted closer, his gaze unwavering as he studied Nikon’s features. “I know things are complicated right now, and I don’t want to make them any harder for you,” he continued, his voice soft but steady. “Just know that I’m here for you, and I’m not going anywhere. If you need something from me, whatever it is that would help you ease things a little right now, I can give it to you,” he spoke in a gentle, encouraging but firm tone and gave him another smile. As he spoke he reached out for a moment to wrap his hands around Nikon's wrists and squeezed them in a firm grip, holding the touch for a moment just as he kept their eye contact steady. He hoped the gesture would help Nikon calm down a little more, perhaps. He didn't know when exactly was Nikon planning to have his talks with Rodion and Mats, but he knew it would be some time after today, or perhaps even today. He did not envy Nikon's position for sure, it wasn't an easy place to be, and while he was also Nikon's suitor, he was here as a friend too. Though, admittedly, he knew that right now he was approaching things a little from a more assertive direction in terms of trying to sooth the boy a little.

Originally, River had the full intention of not letting anything go beyond a few kisses after agreeing on a date, nor did he plan to throw his invitation out of the window. However, despite being friends with some of the heaviest users of pot he knew, he didn’t dabble very often himself due to his career. Who knew if he would remember his promise tomorrow once his mind wasn’t hazy and he was thrown back into his at times overbooked schedule.

River went out with his friends to Incubus a lot, he picked up people here and there but he didn’t think he had ever kissed someone this fast before, and the longer they kissed, the more the idea of something more started looking like not such a bad idea despite his earlier reservations. Ezra wasn’t a complete stranger to him, even though they had not met in person until now—he knew about him from their shared friends.

River felt a grin spread across his lips as Ezra leaned into his touch, his fingers tracing a path down Ezra's warm skin. He savoured the feel of Ezra's lips against his, the soft yet firm pressure of their mouths moving in sync, and the little fire that hungered for more, igniting in his gut when Ezra slid into his lap. It was intoxicating. He wasn't entirely sure if it was the pot or Ezra himself, but right now, River didn't particularly care.

As Ezra's hands wove through his hair, River's arm slipped further around his waist, pulling him closer. He craved the heat and contact of Ezra's body, the comforting weight pressing down on him. The gentle scrape of Ezra's stubble against his chin felt just as good, and River had a momentary urge to run his tongue over it. He chuckled softly into the kiss, finding it both a little funny and exhilarating how easily Ezra had shifted into his lap.

"Mhm, merde..." He breathed and let himself sink further into the plush couch, letting his head lean onto the armrest as he trailed his free hand down Ezra’s back. His fingers tangled in the hem of Ezra's shirt, his thumb rubbing small circles on the skin just above his waistband as he explored Ezra’s mouth with his tongue. He felt heavier and relaxed under the influence and he felt everything just a little more intense, especially the taste of Ezra.
