the archive boasts the most extensive range of whiskies – magical and mundane – in britain. it is situated in the old town of edinburgh, nestled away between bookshops, and (for those who can see it) it very much appears to be just another bookstore.
enter, and you will find a space much larger than the exterior suggests – though it is long and high, rather than spacious and wide. a narrow bar-height counter runs the length of the room to accommodate those standing, with tableless booths lining the opposing wall, and small tables with comfy chairs dotted between. the lighting is constantly dim, or as the proprietors would say “it’s mood lightingâ€.
the entire wall behind the bar is a series of shelves and nooks, each home to a whisky (organised by region, distillery, and age). food must be ordered at the bar, and the menu is limited (in fact, they only serve food because they are legally required to). however, the food
is good, thanks to high quality, scottish ingredients prepared by passionate cooks.
