She could not recall how many times she had read the letter which now sat, wrinkled and tattered, on the polished wood of her coffee table.

It felt like a million, she decided, curling up on the couch. The more the words danced through her mind, the more she shifted around, until she was eventually reclining with a hand behind her head and a thoughtful expression on her pretty visage. Her olive-green eyes stared at the ceiling, and her brow was furrowed. She was deep in thought, wondering what, after all of these years, had finally convinced her parents to make this decision, and why they had unwisely chosen to inform her through writing rather than in person. It made Lila feel oddly detached and excluded from the situation. It was clear that they’d only told her about their divorce out of obligation, and not because they truly cared about how it would affect her.

A sigh rose in the air, its tone containing a sprinkle of wistfulness and a dash of annoyance. Damn parents. Damn letter.

It had chosen an awful day to arrive; she had a guest to entertain, and though she knew he cared little for the state of her dwelling, Lila believed that a home needed to always have a warm and welcoming atmosphere. But how could she achieve this when her belongings were scattered about, covering the majority of her rooms and creating a mess she hadn’t even thought about cleaning, even with her wand?

Lila tucked a rebellious lock of hair behind her ear and rested her chin on her knees. She couldn’t even think straight, let alone tidy up. Though her demeanor did little to portray it, there was a flurry of emotions swirling inside of her. This particular piece of news was undoubtedly inevitable and, honestly, she’d expected it a long time ago. But what she hadn’t anticipated was her own fiery feelings. She did not think it was going to affect her so strongly – that it was going to bother her so much. She felt like a child again, weighing the pros and cons of a separation between her parents, and searching for any positive she could find despite knowing it wasn’t meant to be.

But they’d been together for such a long time. Lila buried her face in a pillow.

Perhaps she could muster up the ability to work on the house. She needed a distraction, craved one, desperately. And she needed it as soon as possible. Pushing herself upwards, she rose off of the couch and made her way into the kitchen where the work began. There were only a few dishes in the sink, and a quick spell had them all clean in no time. In the living room, she accioed a good amount of books onto the shelf. Her bed was made right away with a wave of her wand. Before she knew it, the house was spotless, and lunch was the only thing left. She still did not feel any better, and though the cleaning had distracted her, now that it was done, her mind was no longer at ease.

The food was only half ready when the chime of a doorbell interrupted her scattered thoughts. Crap. She checked the pot, as if that would make the food cook at a faster pace, then made her way to the door and opened it, revealing a familiar face she was always happy to see.

“Roman.” Lila greeted her friend with a shadow of a smile. There was no point in trying to pretend that she wasn’t uneasy. Roman would have been able to see past any act she tried to put on with his eyes closed; he knew her well enough to know when something was off.

Despite his dislike for affection, she shoved herself into his arms without hesitation, and settled into the embrace for a moment, not speaking, eyes closed, breathing slowly. She felt quite small, but just as safe. Exhaling deeply, Lila finally pulled away and took a step back, keeping her hands on his forearms and surveying him now that they were at arms’ length.

“Let me get a good look at you,” she said, eyeing him from head to toe. “You’re getting to skinny,” she remarked jokingly, then finished with a smile, “but that’ll be fixed as soon as the food’s done.”

Lila led him to the couch then took a seat beside him. “How’ve you been?” she asked. “Tell me everything.”

It had been far too long in the Polishman’s opinion since he had seen hide nor hair of his best friend. They had known each other since they had just been tots, and there wasn’t anyone Roman held in a higher regard than her. Not to mention, Lila was a great cook, and the wizard thoroughly enjoyed a meal made by her. All in all there were so many things that Roman enjoyed about getting to spend time with his best friend that it was hard to pick out one reason above the rest that made him most excited about their visit, all of it was equally just as exciting.

He had been sure to pick up a bottle of Lila’s favorite wine before heading over. It was he least he could do for her putting up with him for so many years, and it made for a good little surprise too. Apparating to her house, the read head waited a moment before heading up the path towards her front door, apparating had always made him just a little dizzier than he would have liked. He rang the doorbell and waited a beat before pressing it again, she knew he was coming, so he wouldn’t have to be too insistent. No matter how excited he was to see her.

When the door began, the man was already grinning. But when the door swung open, and Lila looked less than her normal bright self he knew her to be, Roman’s grin quickly faltered and was replaced by a concerned frown. Normally when anyone hugged him the Fin felt incredibly uncomfortable, but Lila was the exception to his rule. Almost instantly he had his arms wrapped around her, in a firm but gentle embrace. He waited for her to pull away and say anything before he did the same. Lila was generally good about respecting his personal space, and for her to hug him like that, meant she needed her space, and the ex-Klyk was happy to give it to her. He smiled gently at her as she looked him over, knowing not to interrupt her as she assessed him.

“You’re getting too skinny”

Roman chuckled softly at her declaration, and slipped easily into the Polish they had spoken as kids as he spoke “You sound like my grandma. But I guess it is okay, especially since you’re going to feed me. Just means I have extra room.” He joked back,  and surveyed her himself. She looked okay, but something was definitely bothering her. He was in no rush to make her tell him. She would tell him when she was good and ready. Sitting on the couch, Roman sighed and thought for a moment. How had he been? Not bad, making money, but he couldn’t share his means with Lila. She’d never known about his darker habits, and that was to ensure her safety. But there was plenty he could tell her, and he did. He looked at her before he began “Mostly I’m just glad it’s winter holidays. The kids aren’t too bad, but I am glad to be home with the dogs, and getting some time in on the sled.” He shrugged and went on “I’m still adjusting to the life of a teacher, rather than that of an actual curse breaker, you know? But enough about me. I’m just a lowly teacher, you’re the one whose going to be famous..” He prompted with a smile, hoping to help her lighten her mood.

“Well, then, I’m sure your grandmother is a lovely woman,” she said with a smile. She took a step back to allow him inside, and smiled as he sat down on the sofa. Lila always felt that, whenever Roman was over, he stood out. In her small, simply furnished home, he appeared to be a giant. But he never looked uncomfortable. She liked that.

Lila closed the door and immediately dashed into the kitchen, checking the pot once more despite only a minute having passed. She hadn’t missed the bottle of wine in his hands, however, and quickly retrieved two glasses from the cupboard. When she returned to the living room, she took a seat beside Roman on the couch and let out a sigh, placing the wine glasses on the coffee table. “I’m sorry that the meal isn’t ready yet,” she apologised, though she knew however much he might have loved her cooking, Roman’s main concern was never the food. “I’ve been distracted,” she admitted, plucking the wine from his grasp, “and I could really use some of this.”

She offered him a weak smile as she got the bottle open and began to pour some wine into her glass. Without asking, she poured into his as well before resting the bottle down and picking up her drink. She was about to take a sip when she realised something, and Lila turned to look at her companion. “I can’t believe I’ve forgotten my manners," she stated, half-jokingly. “Thank you for this.” She raised her glass to him and handed him is own. “You’re perfect, the only piece of stability I have in my life.” With that, Lila began to drink.

The Polish woman was halfway through before she rested her glass back onto the table. She leaned back in her set and rested the back of her hand on her forehead. She felt tremendously tired, like she was Atlas with the weight of the world on her shoulders. Her gaze flicked between her glass and Roman. He knew she was out of sorts; by now, it was something he could pick up on immediately, in the same way that she could instantly tell whether he was okay or not.

She smiled as he spoke of school and his students. Lila always thought that Roman would make an excellent Professor.

“The dogs,” she repeated with a smile. “How are they? All of them.” It amazed the woman that Roman took care of them all so effortlessly. Ten dogs. She hadn’t even one pet. Although she supposed in her field of work, pets no longer seemed like a necessity. She saw or researched an animal almost every day. It made her feel like she had a million pets.

“You? Lowly?” She grabbed her wine glass and took another sip before continuing. “Hardly, Roman. You’re great.” She knew he was only joking, but she felt the need to constantly reassure him that he was a wonderful person. Her parents had rarely complimented each other, and while she knew that she and Roman were not a couple, her greatest fear in the world was their relationship falling apart - becoming as ugly and broken as her parents’ had. She would not make their mistake and put a rift between herself and the person she was the closest to. “Book sales are going well,” she informed him. “It’s both exciting and extremely terrifying.”

For a moment, Lila sat there, clutching her glass with both hands. Her eyes were looking downwards, but she was not really looking at anything in particular. Her fingers began to tap at the sides of her glass, and she placed it on the table again.

“My parents are getting a divorce.” She reached for her wine glass again and polished off the rest of her drink.
