[Solved] House Points

How do you actually get them? I mean, I know how students could get them in canon--answering questions right in class, etc--but is that how you get them here, or is it a participation thing, or... ?

Yeah. Class participation is usually the easiest way to gain house points ^^; By answering professor questions and completing homework (should it be set) will be rewarded.

Just to add to Siobee's answer, we sometimes have group threads outside of class (usually run by professors) where it's possible to win house points depending on character interaction and driver participation too.
