How do wizards pass the time?!
« on: June 04, 2015, 11:46:02 PM »
This is really not that important, more of a curiosity...

How do wizards and witches pass their time?

Like, do they have TV? Or like a wizarding equivalent of such things?

I know there are books and magazines that can be read, and studying and things of that nature. And of course personal hobbies.

But like, as muggles you know I feel like nearly everyone, on most nights, either gets online or watches TV or netflix or something just to pass the time.

So what about our wizarding friends?! What do you think are some common idle pasttimes?

Celeste bakes or sews.

Elona tends to exercise to pass the time

Pasha...well it's either women or he studies linguistics

Rajani bakes or hunts.

I feel like their hobbies aren't that different than muggle hobbies. Like I totally see there being magical crosswords that ask you the questions.

I also totally see wizarding game shows. Like 'tickle that dragon'. Which is a lot like choose that door.

I would say they're less "connected" in terms of electronics like we are these days. I know they mentioned the WWN and the broadcasts here and there in canon so maybe that would kind of take the place of TV?

I feel like kids/teens are more likely to be playing or doing some a little more active like playing wizard chess or a pick up game of quidditch or caring for their broomsticks or playing gobstones.

Would love to hear everyone else's thoughts though!

Those make sense. My charries can relate.

Wizarding game shows sound awesome... but like, wouldn't that require a TV? Or would they go see things live?

That could maybe make sense, since the whole instant travel thing. Maybe Wizards see a lot of live entertainment, rather than broadcast?

Yeaaaa definitely. I forgot about the radio, I imagine that's a big thing. Especially with teens and young adults, maybe?

I think being active makes a lot of sense too. Especially with rowdy wild children cc: @Deryn Pryce

It's also a bit like lakjsdnalskjneasl since we're technically in the PT year 2000 which was really like... a lot different than things are now even haha

i mean if they can have brooms that fly...
maybe they do have something like tv but it's just wired differently? powered by magic signals like the wwn?
and maybe instead of having an actual telly set they just have magical screens?

gianna wants to know since tv is like a much better cuddle activity after a long day ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

lowkey wants to know if wizards can text too

I see like....magic mirrors that show things! Very looking glass, as well as enchanted music boxes.

But I do see them traveling a lot to see shows.

seeeee that's what I'm like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ about
because magic seems very like, limitless in a way? Like a lot more opportunity for cool stuff, just different that muggle stuff I guess. I mean I know magic even has its limits but, you know what I mean, I think haha. #lalalaloopy

that's sort of what prompted this whole question for me. I'm working on Kimmy and I was imagining her in my headspace settling into her couch and turning on the TV and I was like
o.O

I see that, sort of. I mean Fiorella has a set of magical mirrors that showcase little like animated characters for children. In my head though I sort of figured those would be complex charms, to work like that, but maybe not who knows? I think it would be different to just "broadcast" something rather than having a little interactive character magically functioning.

This is getting deep i love it

I see them being purchased charmed, but I do love that idea of an enchanted mirror for children!

They are likely more high-end items. Like I can even see wizarding shopping networks that instantly produce your purchases.

o.o That would be so cool.

My peeps insist that I mention reading and writing, though I'm sure Kim does this in her free time anyway?

yes yes i get what you're saying you're not loopy at all!

now i'm thinking of both doraemon and the pensieve but what if there was a potion of some sort you can just drip onto any smooth surface to make it "broadcastable" in a way? like make it receptive to magical air waves or something like that?

I feel like what we've seen in canon consists mostly of:

Reading and writing (fairly literary things to Mrs. Weasley and other mums loving Lockhart; witch weekly; the prophet)
Games! Lots of games. Wizarding chess, gobstones, exploding snap, etc.
Lots of tinkering: Sirius's bike, the flying ford Anglia, Fred and George inventing stuff
The radio—Celestina warbeck etc., random programmes
Collecting—chocolate frog cards, your favorite team paraphernalia, etc.
pets—lots of interesting creatures to raise
Art—Luna's ceiling

I just feel like wizards tend to be less connected and a lot more gossipy/grapeviney about how they hear things, but maybe that's just me. The mirror thing we saw with James and Sirius, but it doesn't seem to be that widespread—otherwise wouldn't all the kids have them to chat over the summer? We know communication is poor—everyone uses owls or fires or word of mouth. No instant communication or we'd have had a lot of issues easily averted in the series (re: Sirius's death. Could argue it's just Hogwarts but I mean, Molly has a clock to tell her where her family is; she can't just ask them clearly).

Kinda off topic but related to the shopping network thing, I'm really interested in the physical limits of magic—we know you can conjure items but there has to be some kind of material cost. They still have artists and craftsmen and people still have shabby robes. There's still an economy. Is it that the things they create don't last? Why doesn't everyone make everything they need especially when it's so simple as clothing?
let your memories grow stronger and stronger 'til they're before your eyes

you'll come back when they call you, no need to say goodbye

*is slow and only just giving my two cents*

It feels very church community like to me, kinda like what Helena said. Very gossipy, grapeviney stuff, very much the kinda stuff I used to do with friends when we were bored on Sundays at church with nothing to do... Hands on stuff, games, reading, etc. Also feels very like... 1930's with the radio. I FULLY believe there's serialized radio shows *coughstaresatWIPpilecough* and that helps pass the time as well...

It's an odd balance.... Like, wizards basically had gifs before anyone else, let's be real here. It doesn't make sense to me that they have moving pictures (and photography in general) but not some sort of film. It seems off since the two are so intertwined. Like, I get them maybe not having video games or tv as we're aware of it, but they are LITERALLY LIKE TWO STEPS AWAY FROM FILM/SHOWS. All they really have to do is add sound to their photos and boom, done.

/end... rant? Ramble? idek
