[BoT] Save the little one {Tree & Ben}
« on: March 21, 2016, 07:58:01 PM »
Genevieve was working the late shift, it was fairly early in the morning but she was learning a lot by shadowing Ben Fletcher. He was a wonderful healer and she felt lucky to be able to shadow him. But tonight was going to be different than any other night. It was the night that one of the schools caught on fire, Hogwarts. It caused several students to be shipped to St. Mungos. It was then that she saw several of them starting to come in. Her eyes widened and she took a step backwards. "They are here, please help, we need beds and Healers!" She quickly looked around and her eyes fell upon a small girl. She was covered in burns and her leg looked mangled. The little blonde girl was quickly brought to a bed.

"We have at least third degree burns, a possible break and several smaller burns. We need to get her cleaned up." She looked up at Ben and perked a brow. What did she do, she grabbed her wand and the closest pain med potion near her. She had to get this little one so she wasn't in pain. It was horrible to think that her whole leg was covered in burns. It had to be painful, it was obvious that the little girl needed their help. She was more than ready to help anyone and everyone. It was a terrifying thought, a school that taught children had caught fire, how many were injured, how many were hurt? Gen shuddered to think, it was the whole reason she wanted to become a healer.

The sensation of apparition was very unpleasant, but it was nothing compared to how the rest of her felt. Her leg looked like something out of a horror movie, it was twisted in all kinds of distractions and looked like a melted candle, her other leg and hips were in bad shape, they were red with white bubbles all over, and to top it off her lungs stung very badly every time she took a breath.  Tree laid on her back watching the lights on the ceiling go by, where was she? It wasn't Hogwarts anymore, probably a hospital somewhere. she was badly hurt and probably needed hospitalization badly. Tree stopped moving and a young woman approached, she said what tree already knew, 3rd degree burns, and then Tree saw the look on the woman's face and with that Tree knew it was very bad. When a doctor looks at you like that you know your in bad shape.

Then something snapped inside Tree's mind, she started to laugh, after a moment she looked up at the young woman, "Hell of a first day of school. I was thinking for an encore we could remove my left arm, or maybe remove part of my skull. What do you think?" she said in in a laughing the entire time her lungs protesting. She continued to giggle for a long time, She couldn't help it, it was all to ridiculous, the day she was finally free from her mom and dad, the day she was going to start her journey to become a magic user, the day she was going to become something amazing, was also the day the school burned down and destroyed her. Once her giggles died down another random thought crossed her mind, it all could have been much worse, she could be dead... That in itself was amazing,if people weren't there to save her should have been cooked to death under a bookcase. With that Tree started to sing, a song from Monty Pythons The Life of Brian,

"Some things in life are bad
They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse.
When you're chewing on life's gristle
Don't grumble, give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best...
And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life..."

She continued to sing the song, it was easy for her seeing as she had seen the thing like a million times and had memorized the entire movie. Doing this made her feel better, well it took her mind off other things for a bit, like her leg. People were moving around her frantically, saying things she didn't care to hear. Tree just kept singing, it was almost like she had to sing the damn song. Eventually she go to the end of the song and said to the room at large, "I'm Tree Loveall and I'll be here all week! Don't forget to tip your waitresses."
"Ugh, another day in the suck..."

Ben Fletcher was beginning to think his working the overnight shift was becoming some bizarre magnet for disastrous events. It was too overwhelming to think about; from the Battle those two-and-a-half years ago, to the plague that had devastated the Victory Ball not six months later, to… this. Hogwarts was burning – and no one knew why.

The question that plagued him and his fellow Healers once they had triaged the injured concerned the best method of transporting those too critically ill back to St. Mungo’s. London was too far away to Apparate reliably (especially with exhausted minds, let alone the fact that they would need to get the students to Hogsmeade before the castle’s wards would even allow for it), so the options were narrowed to the Floo system and Portkeys. They would be able to transport more patients more safely with Portkeys, they decided, as some students needed to remain on stretchers or had bandaged and splinted limbs: neither case would be particularly conducive to spinning like a top through a narrow, sooty fireplace system.

He had been at his alma mater for what must have been hours, working tirelessly alongside his fellow Healers. Only once Ben was certain that the surges of injured students flooding the Great Hall had subsided significantly and that Murphy, Mannie, and Amatia felt they were sufficiently staffed and equipped to manage the situation did he take his leave, returning to St. Mungo’s to escort the last round of critical students. Mediwizard reinforcements were on their way to Hogwarts for backup, leaving Ben free to return to St. Mungo’s to tend for the bay of those too critically injured to remain at the school. His department – Emergency Healing – was a relatively small one, and they needed all hands on deck.

His little cohort – which included a small curly-haired blonde girl, a chubby black-haired boy, and a tall red-headed girl – arrived at St. Mungo’s more gracefully than he could have hoped via a Portkey. Immediately he had set to work, seeking out the Healer-in-Training assigned to him for the night: Geneviève Lémieux, a young woman from France who was proving to be quite the eager student. Her expression told him that she may not have been as mentally prepared for this as she may have thought; fortunately, perhaps, their patients were too preoccupied to notice the young trainee’s alarm. He made a mental note to bring this up with Gen later – not to scold her, but to gently remind her that she was her patients’ rock; that they would feed off of whatever emotion she showed outwardly, and how important it was that those emotions be positive or at least neutral. Even if you had been working for hours and were exhausted, it was something you always had to keep in mind.

Merlin, what time was it, anyways?
Ninety-nine times out of a hundred, Ben was far too busy tending to his patients to pay attention to the clock. Unlike most other professions, Healing did not have a hard-and-fast “quitting time” for the day. It was the furthest thing from a 9-to-5 gig; not only for the physical hours worked, but also for the intrinsic emotional investment. You were “done for the day” when your patient was stable – not when the clock said so. Crises like this were different, though. You could go for hours without a break and not think twice – but once you had the smallest respite to re-orient yourself, the realization of how much time had actually elapsed was almost overwhelming. He almost made this mistake right then, but redirected himself before he had a chance to sneak a glance at the clock.

“Thanks, Gen.” He nodded appreciatively to the young woman as she gathered supplies.
“Good, we need to address the burns first – once we’ve irrigated the area, we can apply a topical anesthetic and take a closer look at the break. Remember: the most dangerous part a burn is the risk of infection, so we need to make sure we address that thoroughly.”

With murmured thanks to the support staff as they helped get the new arrivals settled, Ben turned to his first patient: the curly-haired blonde girl who couldn’t be more than twelve. She had been singing to herself, and when she finished Ben grinned at her and applauded as he approached her bedside.

“Hey there, Sweetheart. What’s your name? Do you know where you are right now? Can you tell me what happened tonight?” He paused for several seconds between each question, giving the small girl some time to collect her thoughts and answer him without overwhelming her as he prepared to examine the girl himself.
“I’m Healer Fletcher and this,” he gestured to Gen, “is Trainee Lémieux – we’ll be looking after you, alright? First thing we want to do is clean you up a little: you have a couple of burns on your legs that we really don’t want to get infected. This will sting a little, but you’re one tough cookie so I know you’ll be just fine. Can you hold as still as you can for us?”

He gestured for Gen to stand beside him, and the pair waited. Ben preferred to have some sort of verbal acknowledgement from his patients when possible before proceeding – he found that it typically helped them feel a bit more comfortable with the procedure.

but in my mind, we're somewhere in my car and it's raining hard on the streetlight glow
you got your lips on mine, it's gasoline on fire, I never will forget
you grabbed my shirt and pulled it over my head
and your fingertips slide up and down my back, breathin' hard, steamin' up the glass
I'd give anything if I could bring you back home

Someone was clapping ing for her song. Or was she just imagining that? He was asking for her name, "why do you want to know?" She said trying to buy time, in truth she was having a lot of trouble remembering her name, "it's, it is." What was it? Tree started to panic this was such a simple question, how could thus be so hard? Finally it came to her, "I'm aaa- Tree." She got her name right but the way she said it, it sounded like she was saying she was not in fact a human girl but a Tree that grew in the woods.

Oh gods more questions, okay she could do this! Where was she? It wasn't Hogwarts she knew that because they went outside, "not hogwarts." She said simply, "hospital?"  Why was he asking all these hard questions anyway?

And another question, what had happened? "sleeping, I was sleeping and then it got hot, and, and... fire..." he then asked if he could start fixing her and Tree mumbled, "K..." then started to reflect on what had happened that night.

Someone was missing and she went to find them in the fire, who was it?  Suddenly it came to her, She was looking for her cat Wedgie! Tree shot up knocking something out of one of the doctors hands and shouted "where is wedge?!" She frantically looking around for her cat, tears forming in her eyes, "I found him, but- someone, someone was holding him... Wedgie, where did you go?!" She tried to stand up but didn't make it further then a centimeter before her leg stoped her with a protest of agony, Tree screamed in pain and fell back onto her back. She needed to know where he was, like right the hell now!
"Ugh, another day in the suck..."

‘Oriented to person, though with some uncertainty… reasonably oriented to place… fair recollection of events…’
Ben’s seasoned brain filed away each observation and tidbit of information as he proceeded with the history-taking, nodding mutely along in silent encouragement as the young witch spoke. If he hadn’t had the brief report from the school, he would have thought the girl disoriented to self: but her name was, in fact, Tree.
‘Somnolent but easily aroused to voice. Answering questions appropriately.’ he noted as she gave a sleepy mumble of assent.

And then suddenly it was as though she had been electrocuted. The tiny girl shot bolt upright in a state of sheer panic, crying for something or someone that Ben couldn’t quite make out, and did her best to get out of bed. Ben couldn’t say he wasn’t expecting it – in truth, he had seen much worse reactions when patients were in shock – but he never ceased to be amazed by the strength of the blindly panicked.
She let out a shriek of pain and then Ben was there, murmuring softly as he pressed gently but firmly on her shoulders, anchoring her.
“Tree, I need you to stay in bed for me, alright?” He did not shout to make himself heard over her wails; instead, he was crouched beside her so they were on the same plane and he continued to speak soothingly in a normal tone. “Can you tell me what’s upsetting you? I’m here to help – but I need you to take a nice deep breath and try to relax so I can understand. Can you do that for me?”

The Gryffindor alumnus locked eyes briefly with his French trainee and inclined his head slightly, his expression neutral. He did not want to sedate the child if it was at all avoidable, but if she wasn’t able to calm down he would need to for her own safety. If she had any internal injuries, she would exacerbate them by moving; likewise, sedation could also complicate certain internal injuries if they were present. His best bet would be to attempt to talk her down and convince her that it was in her best interest to cooperate and relax as best she could.

He turned back to his small patient and gave her a warm smile.
“I know it’s been a very stressful day. It’s okay to be scared: but we’re going to get through this together. Can you tell me what hurts?”
