Mostly just the basic things like generic rules of behaviour. For instance I have read the Japanese will use the word "San" as a mark of respect to others. Other behaviours like that I should be aware of! And for the history information about dating/courting etc are the main things that spring to mind

I'll definitely cover the different honorifics and language quirks I can think of!

Until then, wikipedia, thought not ideal, is a treasure trove of info if you can sift through it. The guide will hopefully be up tomorrow night, depending on how much irl work I have.

As promised, there is now a Mahoutokoro Cultural Guide available.

However, only the Japanese portion is done so far, the rest are incoming.

As a question, I know traditionally a lot of these names are surname first, but I've seen a healthy mix of surname first and surname last. Which is the correct way? I want to be as correct as possible....

For MH, the display name will be be done:

FIRST NAME LAST NAME

We want to keep it consistent. In sheets and threads and whatnot, you can do it however you want.

EDIT: This will make it easier, because not all asian names follow the surname firstname pattern, so you can't even assume it needs to be switched every time. This just keeps it straight.

But the Liu family has it last then first. Will characters with the last/first set-up have to change their display names? Why can't we have the proper name arrangement for the characters by an individual basis? I'm just curious since the Liu family already set a precedent for the alternate name arrangement it seems like there shouldn't be a problem with it.

IMPORTANT NEWS!

After discussing it in admin, we've concluded that we would like to keep as accurate as possible. Therefore, Mahoutokoro-area adults and student (and characters who would have grown up in that region) will follow the traditional asian naming conventions of their country/culture, most likely:

FAMILY-NAME followed by GIVEN NAME

So MHKTKR students/characters who come from a culture that use the Familyname Firstname system will use that system for their display name. Existing sorted asian characters in the Europe area do not need to change their names unless they want to. Sorry for the mixed messages, this was something we hadn't needed to discuss until now.

Please note, this only applies to the display names. Within threads and sheets, they can be referred to whichever way, though keep in mind that the eastern naming convention would be more accurate and as people living in those areas, they would know it.

Just out of curiosity, mostly for app writing.

are mahou students / the school year following traditional March/April to Feb/March school year?
aka: are they on a different school year than Beauxbatons/Hogwarts/Durmstrang in which ages are modified?
AKA: are students currently in [for example, fourth year] going to be promoted to fifth year at the end of March playtime?

We've decided to keep all schools on the same playtime schedule - so term starts September 1 and ends in June - for the sake of simplicity. ^^ BB and Durm used to be on different term schedules, but we found it was easier to have everyone on the same schedule so we're applying that to all schools going forward!
So basically, determine ages based on September-June playtime like you would for Hogwarts/BB/Durm. ^^

I only ask because the Mahoutokoro guide clearly states April to March (or at least I'm reading that, considering Hanami happens in April and it states "new and returning students")?

We should be on the same timeline as the other schools (I believe the "sorting" or intro section covers that). The April or March thing may just be a remnant of the first guide that I missed. I'll take it out as soon as I get back from my exam.
