[Solved] The age that an American wizard become an adult?
« on: July 30, 2017, 02:37:21 AM »
What is the age that an American wizard become an adult?

In the UK you have to be 17 to be able to drive.
What do you think the age is in the us?  Driving age 16?  Wizarding world is all 17? or 18 like the rest of the US?

What do you think?

If you mean at what point someone is considered an adult and no longer has a magical trace on them, I would say 18, as that's around the age that students graduate and it's the adult cutoff legally in the US anyways. That way we don't have people who are adults in the wizard one world but not in the muggle world.

That's my best guess ^^

Agreed with 18! Because we like to be difficult in the States >>
The only hiccup I see to this is that means some students won't be able to use magic for a full year (or longer) after they graduate... which is kind of odd xD

at maximum, students will have to wait 2 months after they graduate. if they are born on august 31, they start their seventh year on september 1 at age 17. they'll graduate end of june, then will turn 18 the following august~

It took a while to find out where the post went. This is a better sport for it. ty- Meridian

Need to go back and re-check the date and ages.

Thank you so much for all your input!

But in non magical Britain the age of adulthood is 18 (you gain voter rights, no longer considered a child who can be adopted, get married without the need for third party permission etc) while in the wizarding world this happens at 17. The books set the precedent of being an adult in one but not the other?

We can drink at 18, in the US you have to be 21. They're funny like that ;)

Adulthood's still 18 in the US. you gain agency at that age. the only thing you need to be 21 for is drinking

@Christine's word is law though

"Until the 1965 repeal of Rappaport’s Law, which enforced very strict conformity with the Statute of Secrecy, no child was allowed a wand until they arrived at Ilvermorny. Moreover, wands had to be left at Ilvermorny during vacations and only upon attaining seventeen years of age was the witch or wizard legally allowed to carry a wand outside school."- https://www.pottermore.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/ilvermorny

Is it possible that 17 is the witch or wizard "legal" age of America?
