[April MP] So prepare for a chance of a lifetime (Brynn)

Annika's cat had been missing for over a week. This had been possibly the best news that Brietta had heard since she returned to Hogwarts for her third year, and the Slytherin had immediately set out to think of a plan that would take advantage of her poor sister's 'misfortune' and greatly benefit them both (though mostly Brietta). The English witch's original plan was already a brilliant one, and Brietta was sure it would have succeeded, but when she heard news of an adoption day in the local critter cafe in Hogsmeade, Brietta just knew that she couldn't let the opportunity pass. It was perfect! It was ingenious! All she needed was a little help to pull it off and she could think of only one person...

The two sisters hadn't been getting on so well, ever since Brietta's return from Beauxbatons. Even though they'd had a whole Summer holiday to mend the bridge and the majority of their third year had already flew by, Annika was still leaving her sister behind in favour of her new 'shiny' friends. Though she'd have never admitted it out loud, Brietta was extremely jealous. That wasn't to say that the other Toft was friendless, oh no, she'd been spending her time between the friends who went with her to Beauxbatons, @Brynn Caines most of all. They'd made a deal before they went to the French school and Brietta remained true to her word even after they returned to Scotland. The aloof witch would even call her housemate one of her closest friends, and Brietta had decided that only Brynn would be able to help her with her master plan.

The shrewd plan that the Slytherin had come up with was simply this: If Brietta adopted a new kitten for Annika as a surprise, her sister would be reminded of who her true friend was and Brietta would be back in Annika's good graces again. If the English witch was perfectly honest with herself, she probably didn't need Brynn's help at all. She just wanted the company, and Brynn was nice company. And of course, the entry was free for the day which meant she had more to spend on food which, quite honestly, was the most thrilling and important part of the plan altogether. It would also provide an opportunity for the two to talk outside the castle walls, Brynn had been acting a little shady ever since she randomly showed up at the Toft household back on the island and Brietta really, really wanted to know what was going on. If she could weasel out the info, the calculating girl would have killed two birds with one stone. Brietta liked efficiency.

Of course, Brietta realised getting the housemate to actually agree to go with her into Sugar & Spice was easier said than done. After many persuasive conversations and a promise to Brynn that she'd buy both their lunches whilst they were there, she finally managed to drag her friend down into Hogsmeade with her. They walked into the bustling cafe and took a seat, where an overly-cheerful girl Brietta recognised as  one of the older students asked for their order. "Umm... I'll have a hot chocolate and a... cauldron cake, please." Brietta said, looking up at the older witch with a cool smile. "And Brynn?" Her eyes twinkled with a sly glint, as the Slytherin smirked. "Don't forget, I'm paying so have what you want." She smiled as the waitress took her housemate's order and then left, and turned towards Brynn nodding her head a little in gratitude. "Thanks for this, by the way. I... appreciate it."

A kitten decided to jump up onto her seat, and Brietta picked it up gently in her one good hand, showing it off to Brynn with a grin. "This one'll do, I guess. Looks kind of like Cookie," she grimaced whilst shrugging her shoulders before plopping the cat down back onto the seat. A terribly mischievous glint crossed her eyes, as Brietta's face changed into one of false innocence. "While we're here... what's up with you?" She tugged on her glove upwards before continuing, "I know something's up, so just say it. Can't be easy going behind everyone's backs the whole time."

Why had she agreed to come along again? Brynn liked Brietta, a rare thing for the antisocial girl, but she was not in the mood to go out into the world today. All she really wanted to do was sketch in her journal and study her book of dueling spells. She didn’t even like cats! Well, that wasn't entirely true. In reality, she was more resentful of the fact that her parents wouldn't allow her to have a cat, but the Slytherin didn't particularly care about the difference between the two feelings, and wasn't willing to admit that she secretly did like cats.

In truth, the only reason she'd come along was because Brietta had bribed her with food, and Brynn wasn’t one to pass up anything that was free, especially food. Unlike some of the other students, Brynn's parents didn't send her any pocket money, and the stuff she'd stolen in August had long since run out. The fact that someone was willing to pay for her food had given her more than enough motivation to agree to go, and she had to remind herself of this multiple times as they'd walked to the shop. She snuck irritated glances at the annoyingly cheerful girl waiting on them while looking for the absolute cheapest thing on the menu before Brietta reminded her that she was paying, and that Brynn could get whatever she wanted. "I'll have the same thing as her." She said, nodding in Brietta's direction. "You're welcome," she said simply, once the other girl was gone. "and thanks for lunch." She was about to ask what the big deal about Annika's cat was anyway, but Brietta spIke first, her words catching Brynn completely off guard.

"I do not go behind people's backs!" she said defensively, "Or at least not all the time." It was a lie and she knew it. The girl was sneaky by nature, and much preferred learning about other people's lives and secrets that revealing details about her own. Indeed, she rarely talked about herself, and even when she did, she only sometimes told the truth. "And nothing is up with me either." Another lie, though this one was considerably more obvious. Brynn had started out the year happier and more talkative than ever before, but around Christmas her attitude had changed. She'd stayed at the school during the holiday like she always did, but with with the new year came the letters. Of course, Brynn had received letters from home during the first half of the year, but those had come considerably less often and weren't nearly as angry as the newest notes. They came daily, each one berating her for stealing money and sneaking off to Hogwarts and not even having the nerve to come back for Christmas. But after three weeks, the letters stopped suddenly, and she hadn’t heard from her family since then.

For three months the third year had been left to worry about what would happen when the school year ended and Brynn had slowly become sullen and withdrawn once more. While she'd foolishly hoped that no one has noticed, it was clear that Brietta had. Brynn glared at her housemate through narrowed eyes for a moment, debating what to tell her. Yes, Brietta was the only person at Hogwarts that Brynn would truly consider a friend, but she wasn't quite sure that the other girl would keep her secrets well, secret. Still, it might feel good to talk about her fears, and Brietta might even be able to offer her advice. Besides, she didn't have to tell her everything if she didn't want to.

With a heavy sigh her features softened and her expression turned to one of wariness instead. "Do you promise not to tell? I don't want this to get out." It was the first true thing she'd said since they'd entered the café, and though she didn't have a valid threat to make against the girl, Brynn wold most definitely have her revenge if the other Slytherin betrayed her trust. "Did I ever tell you why I randomly showed up at your house that one day in the summer?"
